Title: Tips for a Better Hardflip?
Post by: I Can't Think on May 05, 2013, 11:08:56 PM
So I've been working on hardflips for, suffice to say a long ass time. On flat I've got them pretty good, decent enough I can throw a ghetto bird in a game of skate if I'm lucky. Now off of anything bigger than a two, the trick doesn't work for me. Right now my method works like this. I setup with my front foot in the middle of the board with a angle slightly less than a kickflip, then have my back foot like an ollie, but a little lower to help scoop. When I pop I jump forward while simultaneously popping the board forward and therefore vertical, I let my front foot wrap then give it the lil flick and bam. Now my inconsistency with this trick is mostly which foot do I keep more weight over, where should I lean, and Where should I look. Some people look at the nose and some people just look at the board like they would for a kickflip or front shuv. I'm not really sure, I kinda flip flop between both. I also flip flop between putting weight on each foot and leaning forward, back etc. Some input would be greatly appreciated  ;D

I'm always confused by the placement of the back foot.

Everyone does them with their toe deep into the pocket on the heel edge but when I do them like that they don't flip right.

Which is strange because when I do switch hardflips, which are professional grade, I put the ball of my foot on the toe side of the tail for counter leverage I guess.

I've been trying to do my regular hardflips the same way but I can't get the same scoop action with my opposite foot.

I'm on that Eric Koston shit over here!

+I'm just going to say its about pressure more than flicking the front foot, so I don't think focusing on the front of the deck would mean much, if anything it might fuck you up because your brain might be tricked into kicking harder with that front leg instead of letting the deck get maximum lift.

you need a lot more pressure on the board than on any other trick. then flick it as hard as you can. pressure is definitly the key, you could call i force flip as well.

Pop as hard as you can is my tip. I don't worry about where my feet are too much, just pop like a motherfucker and get the front foot out
Of the way. I keep my weight pretty centered and shoulders square. Back foot goes on the tip of the tail at a backwards angle, front foot somewhere in the middle, and just pop hard.

Perfect info guys. I skated earlier today and ended up discovering this myself. I was landing them shitty, at like a 160 degree angle instead of the full 180. To fix this I did the pressure thing where I just squatted far down building the pressure in opposite directions. When I popped I really tried to smack down on the fucker to get it vertical, followed by really lifting my front foot up and behind me to wrap around and flip. Bam started doing them in lines. Even got a ghetto bird. Hyped  ;D

The back foot is key. After trying it for years with my back foot's big toe on the outside, someone told me to put it on the inside. All was well after that.

For me i put it like sorta how Reynolds did in his Transworld fs flip trick tip, i scoop then i turn and try to catch it 90, for me its definetly all in the scoop.

I use toe side of the board angled outward like "/" (I'm regular)

Can't do it the other way, balance just seems off.

Hardflips used to be one of my go to tricks like 8 years ago. For some reason i thought they were wack and stopped doing them. This spring I started doing them again as well as getting my switch/nollie heels back. For me I turn the board around so I pop off the nose and land with the board regular. I do this for fs shuvs, varial heels, and bigspins too. Hardflips are one of the tricks where its hard to not pop it high.
