Since the Marc Johnson interview it seems everyone is talking about skater owned companies. Which companies involved in skateboarding are skater owned and which ones aren't.

It's sort of hard to quantify "skater owned" as with most business you're a fool to invest anything more than a small amount of your own capital. Most of the time you back your capital against a line of credit from either a bank/lender or an outside investor. In skateboarding the outside investor would normally be another established brand or distributor who again are usually divided between "owners" and investors. Your kidding yourself if you think skater owned means "owned entirely by skateboarders".

that s true in some cases- but aside from camps like dlx bakerboys and the like, there are a lot of smaller well known brands that are 100% skater owned.

Yeah you're absolutely right and I should've mentioned that the brands I was referring to are those that have more of a stronghold in skate media and your average skateboarders consciousness. The smaller the brand the more likely they are personally and financially invested in the company and have fewer or no one else to answer to. Brands like Scumco&Sons are most likely paying for everything from their own pocket or with a line of credit. Guys like Pontus at Polar and the magenta guys seem to have done it too with some small initial production runs and a little start up cash. It just gets harder to maintain the integrity of that structure as demand grows as larger production runs create greater divisions of time between shipping products and collecting money. That's when you need a line of credit just to stay afloat.

Jonny Schillereff at Element broke his shoulder skating a pool in his late 30's which not many people will skate long enough to be in a position to do. Real as it gets. Resenting success is part of this idea of credibility, however, so-

It's hard too tell who is these days. I'm guessing crailtap and a lot of the smaller brands.

Most, if not all smaller independent companies are skater owned. Pretty much every big company has some kind of corporate backing now a days. Nothing wrong with that, its good business, but:
Roger, Heavy, Sausage, The Killing Floor, Music, Scumco, Cockfight are all owned by skaters.

Rob Dyrdek bought Alien and Habitat. And Zero is half Jamie half Chris.

so according to this thread either every company is skater owned or we have a plethora of naive kids that believe anything the skate industry tells them. I'm gonna go with the later.
just because a pro says he owns a company does not equate to that pro being the only owner. If anything, when a pro says that its just to keep you from looking behind the curtain.

Billabong owns Element, and they're not even surfer owned

I really love the small companies with the soul of a true skater running the whole thing. This one from Costa Rica. Just a tight crew of skaters !
