Title: Route One Interviews: Rowley Pt.2
Post by: BlacklistedUK on September 18, 2014, 12:48:44 PM
It seems a bit over the top for me to start a new thread each time I knock an interview out so, from now on, I'm gonna stick 'em in this thread and change the title each time a new one comes out.

That way, the people that want to check 'em out can but I'm not clogging up the forum with loads of threads.

Got some much more in-depth interviews with the likes of Riley Hawk, Vincent Alvarez, JB Gillet and Lucs Puig coming soon - I'll bob 'em in this thread as and when they come out.

I have to say those mountain dew interviews didn't do anything for me.

Fair point mate - most of our interviews we find out about well in advance so I research and write all the skate-geek questions whilst another lad comes up with the ones that keep the sponsors happy. He films about 70% of them as he's the one with the travel budget and I edit 'em (I only get to film the ones in the UK). In this instance though the interviews were organised about 20 minutes before they happened so they they were knocked out 'spur of the moment'.

The next four interviews were all well researched (and we had plenty of time with each of the guys) so, fingers crossed, they should be back on track.

It's exporting now! My laptop is proper chugging but I've turned the bitrate right down so hopefully it shouldn't more than another hour.

It is 2am in the UK though so as soon as it's exported I'm gonna set it uploading and go to sleep. I'll embed it first thing in the morning but, should you want to see it before then, check the R1 youtube account in a couple of hours ( youtube.com/routeonedirect ).

Sorry for the balls-up!

A few of people have said that, hence me doing some work on the audio for the Lucas interview.

Thing is, to me I can hear it all perfectly (honestly it seems crystal clear to my ears) and I thought my laptop speakers were gash so I couldn't understand such comments at first. With some of the earlier interviews that I didn't film (ones that were done in public places) such criticism was appropriate but with these done in a near silent environment it made seemed to make no sense. But, given it has been brought up more than once, I have to assume that (for some device formats at least) the sound isn't transferring well.

So yeah, I'm not too proud to admit that we're gonna have to make an effort to improve things.

Post by: seb on December 22, 2014, 12:04:30 PM
The JB one has quite some static background noise, but you could use adobe audition to get rid of that. Generally I feel like the audio level of the interviews is lower than the music - so if you just turn up the level of your recorded audio it should be just fine. Hope this helps.
Title: Re: R1 Interviews Thread - Lucas Puig Exclusive Interview
Post by: BlacklistedUK on December 22, 2014, 02:31:19 PM
Yeah, to be fair you're right; I did my best to remove the static from the Lucas one, still had people complaining mind. To be honest though, the music was taken down to a starting level of -6.5dB (and then down to -14.6dB before fading out) and the audio pushed up to +3dB. I then play around with it until I figure the balance works between the song fading out and the discussion starting - obviously I need to run it by somebody else first, perhaps my ears are overly sensitive!

Either way, I hope it hasn't taken too much away from what the guys themselves have to say - that's the important bit!

Not interviews but I wanted to post these (but didn't feel I should clog things up with yet another new thread):

Firstly the Supra Avex Shoe Launch in Barcelona last month with the likes of Tom Penny, Javier Sarmiento, Spencer Hamilton and Lucien Clarke in attendance (none of them actually skated but you can't blame me for name dropping Penny when he was there, can you?). On the other hand Oscar Candon, Thibaud Fradin, Doug McLaughlan and more fought through the barrels of free booze to actually have a roll.

Whatever he and Dill agreed to is probably just some bullshit "don't need to produce skate footage you're a legend" type agreement. Oh well....hate to say it but too much hype already for Gino FA footy. It's going to be a huge let down if it's just a photo or short clip with all this hype "he's on the team" shit.

Such a talented, down-to-earth dude.

This right here. The term "100% Skateboarder" gets thrown around a lot but Buz is exactly that. Total skate rat. No fashion, no arrogance, no pretentious, no hijinx or bullshit persona...just a skate machine. No doubt the people's SOTY every year.

Great interview, thanks for posting.

Wes and Dennis, true skate rats. I feel like they are the beginning of the list of skaters that will be SOTY's every year whether they win or not.

Also why is there never enough Dennis footage?

It's called diplomacy. U know there has to be some shit boiling underneath the surface. All wars are usually shrouded in secrecy. One guy came out with a purse bag vid, then the other guy came out with a purse bag vid. One guy wears this or does that funky collaboration, then the other guy shoots right back. Its a vogue battle. :o

Anyway, Blind saw fit to turn Route One rider Sam Beckett pro during an 'invite only' session at the London House of Vans the other week. Best part being that Sam had no clue this was happening! Speaking of him skating "different" or non-hammer style spots, didn't he do a switch nose wheelie fakie double flip out in his Digital part? I always thought that was a wild-card from him. One definite highlight of my year had to be wandering around Soho with Chris Haslam looking for a decent sarnie shop and taking skate chat geekery to the nth degree; genuinely a really nice and normal bloke.
The day before I was lucky enough to sit down with him for half an hour and ask a few questions - due to time constraints a lot has ended up on the 'cutting room floor' but the majority of the interview is available to view now.

Sadly I had some serious audio issues with this (that were noticed at the end of the interview and rectified by the time it came to interviewing Mullen) but after a week of teaching myself to use Adobe Audition I've got it to a stage that I am happy(ish) with.

Hahaha, I never really noticed the arms thing and I honestly don't have a problem with his skating (quite the opposite actually). This:
https://kingpinmag.com/longform/vivien-feil-static-iv-original-edit-josh-stewart1#CJlVjOuDiw3zko9U.97
has some great Puleo stories but for some reason I absolutely LOVE this quote;

Vivien: Josh something that must be done is a Bobby Puleo quote book. You know the last time he saw Soy (of Magenta fame) he asked him: “What are you up to, drawing leafs?” (Laughs)

FUCK :D

Why don't you put the question there before he starts answering it? It's pretty annoying reading the question when he's already answering it. Actually, why put it in text anyway?

If I were to put the question up first & leave time for people to read it (given they are usually quite long), I'd have to add approximately 10 seconds to the edit per question. I always ask at least twelve questions, that alone would ad two minutes to any interview watching time. So that's why mate; most of the interviews are long enough anyway without having to add an extra few minutes to their run length.

And why put it in text at all? I have a Yorkshire accent that some people may struggle with understanding plus the questions I actually ask are usually much more longwinded than the text you see - often answers allow me to tweak the structure of the question to make more sense

Alright then. I just think it ruins a perfectly fine interview. I'm not the rain man. I can't read and listen at the same time and actually fully process and understand both.

Adding a few minutes in length and some of your personality (hearing your voice and the way you asked the question) would IMO be only a good thing.

More from Daan, this time jumping in on Dollin's interview. Dustin does not hold back in this and there are genuinely no fucks given; harsh when he needs to be harsh, respectful when he needs to be respectful. The actual interview came in at nearly an hour, he's that much of a pleasure to talk to. Managed to get it down to a digestible 12 minute clip - hope you enjoy!

I'm perfectly happy to accept I got it wrong and he was indeed talking about Jon Dickson. I had to make a choice last night; I'd already worked 10 hours in my day job and then another 6 finishing this off (having done pretty much the same every night for the past week). I was deliberating for a while then thought "fuck it, I really need to sleep" so went with Antwuan. Sorry!

Azar is the team manager in Oz for Volcom. Definitely not him...He still kicks it with a lot of those dudes going by his insta and I'm sure a big name like Dustin would have blocked someone he couldnt get on with coming into a team manager job to a company he reps hard.

Plus, Azar again would have probably been about 12 years old in the timeframe dustin is on about. Can't imagine any 12 year old having sway over who gets onto flip back then.

Unlike Flip 2007.

When we heard enjoi were turning Thaynan Costa pro we got our heads together with Dwindle and came up with this. I wrote the questions and sent them over, Louie added a few of his own and then enjoi put it all together with their own little twist. Worked out pretty well I reckon!

The dubious honor of receiving the final interview of 2017 goes to enjoi head honcho and a personal fave of mine, Mr Louie Barletta.

This was an epic chat clocking in at well over an hour; I've done my best to split it into two manageable chunks and this first part covers tour life, the Smiths and the (then) recent 'King of the Road' win. Part two then gets a lot more personal and in depth, all being well it should be out this time next week.

I honestly just started watching these videos yesterday.
I've only watched ones where I like the guest, but they're actually way better than I was expecting.

I also liked that question you asked him, about how popular "gimmick" skating gets on the internet.
That switch back smith did seem crazy at the time.

And it's awesome that he became a pro skater, but I can't help but feel like the world was robbed of a really great community college English professor.

Stoked (most) people seem to be digging this interview; Louie was definitely a pleasure to chat with (and, as I mentioned before) there was a lot more to our conversation than the stuff that made it into the final cut. I've got nothing lined up in the immediate future interview wise so I'm gonna have a look at maybe getting on that 'raw cut' bandwagon and knock out a few longer pieces.

Yeah, apparently Gustav has sooo much footage already. There's a bit (that I had to cut out of this) where Barney forgot the question I asked coz he was just daydreaming, remembering stuff he'd seen him do recently. The Sour team is stacked so I'm proper stoked to hear filming is well under way.

Dude you seriously have the most generic questions.

It was an Album specific interview with a 15 minute window in which to do it; it was only ever gonna be generic questions in this instance. Other times I get more chance to get deeper into conversation and, on those occasions, the interviews are wider ranging (I certainly don't expect you to watch my entire back catalogue but there are plenty of examples of both).

Not every film has to be Apocalypse Now, sometimes all that's available is a bit of Adam Sandler and there's nothing wrong with that.

Ok, maybe it's pushing it to say he does any more than hint about leaving Primitive (well, he did but that was off camera and obviously I wasn't gonna say anything when he wanted to keep it on the down low) but he addresses a lot of stuff he normally doesn't get the opportunity to talk about (I was defo interested to hear what he had to say about Jenkem) as well as his opinions on what's possible trick wise going forwards.

Ok, so this is less an interview per se and more of a chat. In fact the chat went on so long I've had to split it up into two parts (and it could easily have been three or four). Mark does not hold back in this, reasoning every opinion expertly and offering a hell of a lot more than just an answer to "how he got into skateboarding" and the rest.

Part two will be out next week and, even if I do say so myself, it's a "must see."

it all makes sense until you see the creeps he's guiding for.....

You gotta assume there's a lot of brokeback mountain stuff happening on those hunts

I wish they asked him if he has kept in contact with Sturt and if he has any idea of what he’s up to nowadays. Great interview though and I can’t wait to see his next part. Geoff has always been my all time favorite skater.

Cheers. And yeah, can't wait!

There was so much more I wanted to ask, including going into depth about Sturt and their relationship, but our conversation already ran at over an hour so I had to drop a load questions. Next time!
