i feel like this is a cliche answer but personally just a fan of old country/honky tonk/rockabilly.  some of my favorites:

Hank Williams - Why Don´t You Love Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVc3lfrKGkg#)

Charlie Feathers - Can't Hardly Stand It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZPLWErPu_Q#)

CARL PERKINS drink up and go home 56/57 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBdkLvIwiwI#)

Porter Wagoner - The Rubber Room (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKWJJIEpX4c#)

WYNN STEWART - Wishful Thinking (1959) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qNs75UaG3A#)

a couple of more modern (well, 80's and 90's) bands I dig:

Texas Funeral - Jon Wayne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcoJyvxlbCI#)
their album Texas Funeral is classic)

DM Bob & the Deficit - Bad with wimen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzqhbNS2aBA#)

also if you've never heard this amazing compilation, you're truly missing out:
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a370/misterhayworth/812blog_godlessamerica1_zps1ae0ac66.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/misterhayworth/media/812blog_godlessamerica1_zps1ae0ac66.jpg.html)

with this amazing song:
Troy Hess - Don't Go Topless Mother (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGWpz3b27ds#)

One could also bring up Johnny Rebel, but for obvious reasons I'll let somebody else put up the links

Errrr, drawing some blanks; too much isopropyl & perfume in the afternoon...

Pre-80's (with a few exceptions) country is keen, amazing music; history & the representation of morays in rapidly accelerating world.

Would thoroughly enjoy exploring some really vintage stuff (pre-1950's if even existent), as alas this is one foray I have not delved too deep.

Eddie Noack's "Psycho" has been on every country tape I've ever made for people who ask me what good country is.
Also STOKED to see people mention DM Bob and Jon Wayne.

I don't know how to embed video, but here are some good ones:

Sanford Clark "They Call Me Country" the entire album is incredible

A+ on every one of those links... that Sanford Clark album is fantastic.

Also awesome to hear other people love Jon Wayne as much as I, Texas Funeral is one of my all time favorite albums.  Fucked up county at it's finest.  Also love the mystique that it had for many years, until people found out who made it.  Rest in Peace David Vaught.

Yeah, the mystery surrounding it was really awesome. People thought it was members of Butthole Surfers, and even Rodney Crowell (although that may have some truth behind it?).

I have the second record somewhere, it's really nothing compared to Texas Funeral. Kind of experimental and obnoxious. If I can find it I'll let you know.

Yeah for the longest time a good friend mine, who was an older guy from the Austin scene, swore up and down that it was Gibby and a few of the other Surfers, fucked up just doing a one off country album.  Pretty rad that Jack White of all people recently reissued it on his own label.. that record is just too awesome.

I've heard some of the tracks from the second LP and even though it's totally different I like it a lot.. definitely more experimental and Butthole Surfers-ish.  I would be forever grateful for a download link!!

the older i get, the more i appreciate music that is quintessentially american.  big fan of ~60s country,
buck owens, charley pride, marty robbins.  but i really like country-tinged rock n roll, like NRPS, Flying
Burrito Brothers, early Dead, Byrds, Neil Young (harvest/harvest moon) etc.  i play in country bands too.

lately, this has been on repeat in the car:

I got a million country songs to rip from vinyl if I ever have free time again.

those Gems videos are good stuff. Lost Dog Street Band/Benjamin Todd has some alright songs for sure. That version of the Mountain, Using Again, and I Went Down to Georgia got a lot of play time from me a few years back, with the latter two being reminiscent of a very distinct period in my life. good shit

You're from Portland, or in Portland, ya? My buddy Scott and is up there, Bridge City Sinners/Flail Records. Pretty sure he pressed Rail Yard Ghosts too. My homegirl Amanda Breeze play(ed)s with them. I'm not sure if she's stateside anymore though or back in Canada.

Willi is great, I'm looking forward to hearing his new record. I worked a show that Birdcloud played one time. They were nice when they showed up and sound checked but, when they got on stage they really leaned into the party girl gimmick. I knew what what to expect but, some of my coworkers were pissed. Spingwater still gets stuck in my head every now and then.

It has to be older country than new pop country as that is trash, I’ve been thinking of music as food what you listen to aurally can fill you up with ballads and heartaches pure rebellion if not anthems for drunken shenanigans.

Amen. Hate the flowery production on the LP version as well.
Thanks for sharing that video. I think that’s his brother Tommy on bass? Same bassist as this performance, which had Jessi Colter on the organ.

I'm glad this thread got bumped so I could see it.  I grew up rural and love country music, which was always hard to reconcile when I was a young sk8 punx rat in the 90s.  The resurgence of grassroots country in the last 10-15 years has been a godsend.  I even play a bit on my own; bass and lap steel (poorly) which has been a real fun way to balance my love of honky tonkin and my love of vile experimental noise.

To keep things on topic, here's some jams I love:

I was a huge Byrds fan growing up. To the point of acquiring a Rickenbacker 12 string with finger picks at the age of 16. That being said, Chris Hillman was my favorite (less neurotic than McQuinn) due to his weird approach to the bass in the earlier years and his influence on the group from 1967 onward. He ended up in FBB (alongside Byrds drummer alumnus Michael Clarke) cowriting so many of the songs with GP. I was a fan by default, love them. The albums without Gram are still good, but not of the same caliber as the ones with.
GP’s life and untimely demise is such a strange event. Still draws attention and wonder today.

https://youtu.be/0rrqBsG1yXs

Edit: Forgot to mention Gram’s stint in the Byrds! D’oh!
Sweetheart of the Rodeo is an awesome album.

Hillman wrote and sang this one too. A bit more on topic. If I remember correctly didn’t he sing all the tracks on the LP right after gp died? I love this one….

Sweetheart of the rodeo is great even though gp only sang a few tracks on it. Rumor is he was still contracted by lee hazlewood record company. Which means the louvin bros cover etc…were all sung by mcguinn. That dylan cover of you ain’t goin nowhere is maybe the best dylan cover they ever did.

I was always more of a gene clark fan myself. Maybe my fav of all time. I got a Rick 330 also. You still play uh oh?

I was cranking some New Rider's Of The Purple Sage on my way to work this morning. I fuck with some of the old honky tonk shit, and love Townes Van Zandt, but could never get too into Outlaw country. I definitely fuck more with cosmic country than any other sub-genre but overall country is tight.
