I really want to like AO. But when he was bragging about being in the most "exclusive" store in NYC, I just fuckin' lost it. Has skateboarding really come to this?

I wouldn't mind as much if he just stopped making Bianca skateboards, and wasn't trying to associate it with skating.

Thanks for scanning.

I initially thought it was a back lip, the truck almost looks like its not on the ledge.

I know his skating and looks are reason enough for some to like him but personality wise i don't see how he is likable one bit.

It sucks but if gives him money to hook up some relatively unknown skaters through 917 it can't be that bad. Good for him that can get into a high end shop by "just making t-shirts" as he put it.

I thought this was the most likeable he's come across in an interview.  I don't think he was bragging about being in that store.  He was just answering the question.

Ollie foot plant?  Fastplant?  Was sick.....I'm gonna go do one....

As a frequent ollie footplanter, I was stoked to see that in there.  When you get a good one, it's a great feeling trick.

Glad he had some humility about the LV advert. But at the end of the day, he was still sucking Satan's cock.

The whole exclusivity thing too. The Dover Street Market crap. I guess that the cool guy skate shop is now a boutique.

Great photos. He should probably also take inspiration from Kitrchart's approach to interviews though.

I expected this to be way more annoying.  He actually came off a fairly humble and down to earth.
That photo of the Ollie is sick.   Along with the foot plant down the black hubba.

I dont see how it sucks really for Bianca Chandon to be in Dover Street Market. He intends to sell BC as a fashion brand and its stocked at fashion shops. He knows that its kinda weird to make a brand that isn't sold in most skate shops so he made 917.

Because it is piggy backing off skateboarding to get there and at the same time snubbing shops that do sell skateboards for not being cool enough.

Really the whole interview was a mass of contradictions. You don't want to be another street wear company and yet that's basically what you are doing?

Unless you wear a hat 24/7 - it won't lead to going bald. It's bullshit. Wearing a hat just irritates your scalp a bit - nothing serious. Dying your hair and using shit chemicals to wash it will probably make it fall out before a hat will.

AO seems like a pretty cool dude. Humble for sure.

I like his knock on the headshop that also sells boards, there's a shop up here that also doubles as a headshop, they've been around for 20 years and always have said 'if it weren't for the pipes we wouldn't have lasted six months trying to sell just skateboards'. guess it's better than having to sell scooters or snowboards to get by.

Well with his scientology beliefs and the allegations of him being a wife beater I don't think he is beyond questioning.
At the same time his presence in skating was really something good so there is a balance there which AO sort of addresses.

Had to go back and watch Herman's Baker 3 part to check the nose grind stale fish. Not trying to discredit Herman but they are two completely different tricks. Herman grabbed stale fish after locking in and Olsen grabbed before which seems so fucked to me. Both sick but different.

cept he clearly explains he would like to take the clothing thing to another level -  ie. real fashion brands tend to use a pattern maker and source fancy fabrics etc and all that gay fashion shit when constructing a garment rather than just silk screen some shit on a cotton t-shirt - but he doesnt have the resources to do this yet. i back olson,  he's like one of those guys you work with who is super into all this stupid shit and is kinda coy and self conscience about it but also never shuts up about it and yer kinda like meh wtvr nigga is harmless at the end of the day, its cool he donates money to aids and shit, you can be overly judgmental about every fucking word that comes our of his mouth but dude is doing his thing and trying to help out where he can

Great interview. Like this dude.  But that intro to the article is fucked. Jay Adams and Jason Jessee are the most racist ignorant people in skateboarding. Why people give a fuck about them I don't know. If you're curious google their names with keywords like "homophobic" and "racist" for more!

Also,

Focus your shitty account you fucking kook. At least my opinions aren't downright laughable/unforgivable.

Yeah, it is way better when we all have the same opinions, right?

I'm kind of surprised how far people are prepared to bend over backwards to approve of A.O.

The whole fashion thing is cheesy as fuck. I'm sure there is more cash in it. Could that possibly be a motive? Or is it just for the love of the art?

The whole Louis Vuitton thing gives wearing a RedBull hat more integrity (which is pretty fucked). How long have LV being supporting skateboarding? Or is it just cool because he's 'stacking paper'?

He should just let his skating speak for him, like Heath.

Louis Vuitton never made a commercial supporting skateboarding. It was a commercial where Alex Olson modeled their product and thereby features skateboarding.

It's interesting 360 frip started his post off by saying sarcastically "it is way better when we all have the same opinions, right?" and then seamlessly blasts AO for pursuing something different.

I don't need to define what skateboarding is about-but I can speak for most people that it isn't about the overpriced and privileged world that AO seems to live in. I got into it to escape this kind of crap. I feel like I'm living on a different planet. In one interview he endorses Red Bull, hates on a Jason Lee documentary about the Gonz, hates on Heath Kirchart working jobs post-retirement, brags about being in Dover Street Market, how he made pigtails cool....And people eat it up.

You should get on red bull.

I got nothing for this one, but can you really have super high expectations for this with Jason Lee's movie history in the past 10 years? Jason Lee is far from above all criticism.
brags about being in Dover Street Market

you guys keep arguing about his start up t shirt brand being at a glorified macys while he's about banging dudes/chicks, living in NY and stacking clips.

Im glad there's people in skateboarding like this.  It keeps it diverse.
I can see why people are turned off by it.  It can seem pretentious and overly aware but so is everything else.

I will say this...I started skateboarding to get away from football, baseball, and ball grass sports like that.  Skateboarding was something that gave people an avenue to escape the norms of american (whatever country you're from) culture and be apart of something different.  Something that was for the most part open to any and all kinds.  Skateboarding was a celebration of the individual and what that person could bring to the collective "underground" on a local or global scale.

This point has been made countless times but for me Alex lost alot of my respect and admiration when he decided to ride for Nike.  This dude is gonna say he wouldn't wear a redbull hat and yet rides for the anti-thesis of all things skateboarding.  I started skateboarding to ESCAPE the type of culture that brands like Nike and Adidas promoted and lived by and continue to do.

It's just alittle dumb for anyone that rides for any of the non native skateboard brands to be critical of any other corporate entity, especially one like redbull that DOES do things for so many various alternative cultures, whether that be music, skateboarding, space jumps,...etc. etc.

By all means, go ahead. You're already keeping this argument civil with the petty insults. Here are a few more quotes from his Thrasher interview, circa-Pretty Sweet for you to keep in mind as well.

"I never thought I'd be riding for Girl because I never thought I'd be good enough. I still don't."

"I'm worried about the fact that, as I get older, kids get better. Skateboarding just gets harder."

"I would like to not have to film another video part ... I appreciate it, but giving up four years of your life for a skate video project is a lot of effort. Having that little voice in your head saying "You gotta do it" ... For four years, you're asking yourself, "Are you good enough? Is this what you want to be doing?"

What a pompous, self righteous, entitled piece of shit. Am I right?

High end fashion is all about being exclusive. And Bianca Chandon isn't really a skate brand which is why he did the 917 brand. I dont get why people care what he does with Bianca Chandon. Its a fashion brand if anything else.

Am I right?

Alex, is that you??

Oh, you're referring to the legendary company whom he avoided wearing any clothing of which he abruptly quit so he could hock hilarious overpriced, uninspired clothing? How modest and humble that was of him... ::) ::) ::) ::)

I love how you cautiously avoided the part where I said he critiqued what Heath did AFTER retirement, not his actual retirement. .. And the part where he said "Red Bull is actually really progressive on music. There like the best thing going in music right now."

You see, critiquing a guy who chooses to deliver pizzas, bartend, TM is the exact thing a pompous, out of touch kid would do.

Numerous pros (some of which are his "friends") have called him out for being a spoiled brat with a negative attitude

Haha, I'm a troll for saying something positive about someone. Alright. But while you're still lurking (yeah, I see you), could you point me in the direction of some actual quotes, not just hearsay and assumptions? You only provided one that has nothing to do with skateboarding...

"There was a shop I went to out here in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) and it was basically a head shop with boards in it. Like all these big name boards on the wall by some bongs and I just wondered, like, "Why the fuck would you sell to this shop? Where is the integrity?"

And where is the integrity?...

"But Dover Street is owned by Comme De Garcons, the Japanese band, so it is all their stuff and then they are super selective about the other brands they carry."

Oh, there it is in a high end Japanese fashion shop...

Speaking of integrity:

"How did that Louis Vuitton commercial come about?

Oh, man. It was a job, so the money was good..."

and wait for it:

"...and then Nike was cool enough to let me do it..."

Good of Nike, a brand world renowned for its integrity...And, then:

"You should get on Red Bull.

No, I mean sure. But I don't want to wear the hat..."

Finally:

"Bianca could just get licensed out to Walmart.

No, I will kill the company before it comes to that. I don't care how much money I'm offered. I'm not going that route, but we will see."

So local shop = no, Japanese fashion house = yes, Louis Vuitton = yes, because Nike says so, Red Bull = Yes (if he can get a tasteful shirt) and

Walmart = no, not never, but we will see.

I think it's rad that we have people in skateboarding that can polarize people this much, seriously. Whether you like the guy or not, the fact that we're having this discussion is what separates skateboarding from being sports. Skateboarding is less what you do and more how you do it, including personality. Eli Reed ("poor man's Alex Olson") has a whole clothing line being sold at Opening Ceremony, but no one gives a shit about that, so I guess he's doing the fashion thing appropriately?

In another post I mentioned how skate culture is way sicker than surfing culture; where people give a shit about contest rankings, support giant companies that sell at Wal-Mart, and the most hyped dudes are vapid fitness balls. Love it or hate it, AO is keeping skateboarding interesting.

If I had a brand and that brand got into Dover Street Market I would be over the moon.

Just because it doesn't sell fruit of the loom or dickies or whatever you core as fuck midwest target shoppers want doesn't mean you have to be angry pussies about it. I think its pretty cool/funny for a "uber-luxe" department store to have boards on the wall. Its not like the kid going into DSM to buy the latest DSMxBianca Chandon tshirt was really going to go to a skate shop anyway.
