a friend of mine just published this piece in Vice in conjunction with the 10 anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. She has been studying the scene here for the last few years, and recently finished a thesis on the subject. kids here have a pretty unique perspective on skating; these kids don't really know much about the skate industry, there are in it for the pure love of it all. check it out and get stoked:

Good article but...I think it's a correlation vs. causation thing. There are more black skaters now everywhere than there were ten years ago.

the city went from having maybe 5 or so black kids skating to being about 90% black hood dudes in a couple years. i've lived a lot of places, and I've never seen anything like that.
my bad, i thought you guys would enjoy hearing kids talking about skating from a different perspective than the usual. please, carry on your threads about Josh Kalis' facebook posts and making fun of the fashion choices of people dying of cancer.
