Title: bands you've seen recently
Post by: WantSomeSlaw on September 08, 2015, 10:53:31 AM
My friend's band was one of the openers for Badfish, which is a Sublime tribute band, so me and a few buddies drove up to see them. Super fun concert. I've been into sublime for a while, but seeing Badfish really got me into them now
Who have y'all seen lately?

One day I randomly was by Hollywood and had some extra spending cash so i stopped by pharmacy to try to buy something. Had a shitty customer service experience and backed out ( They suck!!!). So i walked the block down to Ameoba and randomly walked in to a free Mini Mansions Concert. I had never heard of them at the time, but i ended up liking them and bought their album instead.

This is from that day.

Motorhead was the worst show i've seen this year... Lemmy is like a living mummy.

Went to this last weekend:
The "?" was grave pleasures (former beastmilk)

Converge and Amenra were the highlights for sure... The rest was great too, just thought that some of the experimental acts felt like fillers (random noises are not my thing)

Oh yeah and by the way I found out about it by looking for local shows just like you know new music I might not've heard b4 and yeah couldn't find nothin so yeah there's this. Should I officiate my marriage to pushing Mongo by dancing to "I'm not a mongo anymore"? yay or nay? right now. times runnin out.

Wovenhand - Dirty Blue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j46Oa69LZ0&list=PLHrhw5jkMoRhRdVksv2zwa7N5KONN0u2t#)

just saw this band the other night and they were pretty great.  still kind of sloppy and rough around the edges, but great potential.  awesome female fronted deathrock:

Saw Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats a few weeks back here in Boston.  Show was amazing, great play selection across their spectrum of albums.  The opener act was Ruby the Hatchet, never heard of em but they were fucking ripping shit live.  Amazing guitar and drum work.  Really glad I burnt one on the walk over too, melted into their groove immediately on entering.

Caught Yo La Tengo on a mellow acoustic set this past Saturday, really awesome.  Their shows are great, and there's a huge spectrum of young and old folks there, really great vibes.

Shannon & The Clams is on my radar in a few weeks, best way to start a work week is with a live act.

Saw them a couple of months ago. Non-acoustic, but it was exactly like you described. They played a range of songs from their discography and it was amazing.

I saw Defeater (probably my favorite band) and Four Year Strong a couple weeks ago, it was so much fun. Plus it was right down the street from my apartment. God I love walking to shows. Defeater I was right up in front, then Four Year Strong I was drunk and near the back half deaf. This is the second time I've seen Four Year Strong this year so I think I should start listening to them more regularly, they're really fun live.

A week from tomorrow my girlfriend and I are going up to Baltimore to see Circa Survive. They're her favorite band, and they're touring for the 10 year anniversary of their Juturna album so it should be a really good show. We saw them last year and I had a great time even though I wasn't familiar with their stuff. Plus I surprised her with the deluxe package or whatever so before the show she gets to see them play an acoustic set and she gets a meet and greet with the band, plus a special pressing of Juturna on vinyl and a wall banner. I'm going to drink beers near the venue during that, haha.

Just saw Battles last week which was amazing as always. Hungout at black afterwords which was fun.Jamie XX and DJ Harvey this past monday. This chick Empress Of who just signed to XL was really fucking great live. Her first proper LA show was sold out at the Echo which is always my favorite way to see an up and comer.  Psychic TV was a dreadful experience however.  I can't fucking wait for the 29th. I have tickets to see Philip fucking Glass with the Kronos Quartet performing a score to Dracula live to the film at the Ace Theater in downtown. Fuck that's going to be amazing.

I've seen Defeater this year too, 2 or 3 months ago i think. They didnt play that much stuff from Empty Days & Sleepless Nights which is my favourite album from theirs. I was a little bummed.
Their latest stuff starts to sound all the same imo...
Four year strong is pretty fun in album so they should be great live!
I couldnt get into circa survive yet, the winny voice bugs me out a bit.

This friday i will see Capsize in a small venue, i'm expecting to be fun as hell.

that should be a good time. I felt the same way about circa, they're growing on me though. If you get a chance to see FYS I'd definitely recommend it, they're seriously a blast. Honestly, I kind of agree about Defeater. I love them, I love the overarching story in their records, but this most recent one just didn't hit me as hard as the other ones have. There's one chorus in particular that was a little "butt rock" for my tastes. Also I understand that they can do slower acoustic stuff too and I appreciate it for what it is, but it's starting to kind of annoy me that they feel the need to throw it on every album. I'm just pouting though. Travels is still my favorite, but Empty Days and Sleepless Nights is a close second.

Streetlight Manifesto
Against Me!

And I'm seeing The Adicts on Monday for the second time and the angst-ridden 15 year-old in my couldn't be more excited.
Also seeing Gerard Way tomorrow night because I'm also a chubby 15 year old girl inside.

I promise I like better music than this.

Fuck what I'd give to see Parquet Courts live.  That's awesome, dude.

I saw The Men this past weekend and it was the second most disappointing show I've seen after Bob Dylan.  I like so many of their songs, but the sound was so shitty I don't think I recognized a single one.  I also hoped and expected they'd play some Dream Police but no luck.  They were playing the same night as two other big shows so there was hardly anyone there.  Barely anyone in attendance, including the bands, seemed stoked to be there.

Saw Danzig and Superjoint Ritual last night. Danzig was whatever, Superjoint was on another level though. Best show I've seen in a long time. I saw Pantera almost 20 years ago and Phil hasn't lost a step. I missed Witch Mountain, got in for Prong's last song, which was the only one I knew. Some band called Veil of Maya was there too, but they were horrible and reminded me of this

saw health and picture plane last friday night. it was a real small venue show and a lot of fun even though it seemed like me and my girl were the only ones really enjoying ourselves. i dont understand why so many people just stand there and look like theyre not having fun during shows while the band is up there rocking out. it makes me wonder how the band must feel playing to a bunch of people standing still with straight faces. if i saw a band who just stood up there with no emotion and played their songs, id be a bit bummed out.

anyway, the show was good. i dont really care for picture planes music, but he was actually pretty good. health was good despite jupiter keyes not being with them. i did some investigating and it looks like hes been absent for the whole tour, which is like 27 stops through the US and canada, so im thinking he quit. it wouldve been good if he were there. the rest of the band had to rely on playing a lot of pre recorded stuff to make up for being one man down, but they did a good job. i got to thank the guys after and bought the first disco album on vinyl.

last couple of shows

Slayer - free tickets, so quite a lot of fun, but they used to be way better live. don't care for the new album at all.
Mobb Deep - free tickets as well, so no complaints there.
Trepaneringsritualen - crowd of maybe 20 people, but really intense and mesmerizing.
Chelsea Wolfe - best show I've seen this year. go see her if you get the chance.
Godspeed - old stuff is still really amazing, but the new stuff is kinda meh.
Godflesh - quite surreal how 2 guys can make this much noise. really amazing.

upcoming shows

Anna von Hausswolff
Author and Punisher
Nadja
etc.

Probably not "cool" by most standards but I went and saw Roger McGuinn (frontman for The Byrds) recently and it was sick. He had a bunch of really cool stories about Dylan, the Easy Rider soundtrack that The Byrds did, and touring. He still can play and sing great too.

AnCo puts on one of the best shows ever.  I saw the first show they played at Merry Weather Post Pavilion after they released the album named after it.  That was a magical show, I took a tab of acid and an ecstasy pill, and like ran around the grass area all barefoot just loving on everyone.  Best show of my entire life so you have that to look forwards to.

Last week was a great week, Seen Mac Demarco who was great as always, even if your not a fan he puts on one of the best shows ever. Gum (Tame Impalas Jay Watson) solo project opened and couldn't have asked for more

Then on the weekend got to see the Flaming lips play a free show, those old trippers sure know how to put on a show. A great mix of old and new favorites and as always the trippiest light show of all time

Not being on it but all thoses hippies touching each others tripping balls kinda ruined the show for me. My friend paid for my ticket and I would not say that was the best show ever. BUT that is a good album, I do agree a lot !

AnCo puts on a hell of a show now that I've grown up a bit all the hippy stuff at the show would piss me off/make me uncomfortable.  I saw them again two years ago pretty much sober, I had a very large concert beer but that's about it so I wasn't just there to get fucked up.  I was 17 when I saw them the first time so acid and ecstasy seemed really cool to me, which they don't now. But even then I was a little put off by a lot of the hippy types with the pacifiers and the rave shit.  I've been to EDM shows before and just had the worst time, both because I hate the music and ravers make me uncomfortable, but because it was Animal Collective and I love AnCo I could trip and have a good time.

Good enough Dave-E ! That make a lot of sense to me.  I would pretty much say the same except I think Acid is still ''cool'' lol... when you are at the beach or in a camping trip. Anyways all that is just perception. Just saying.

Woah ! Is he touring or was it just a random show that he did just like that ? The byrds deserves so much more. Seems like all theses cool
bands were in Dylan shadow.

Maybe not in the same general taste of slap but I saw Dance Gavin Dance in December and it was probably one of the best shows I've ever seen. Just an all around great show and great band. They make weird music but I find there is a little something of every thing for people in there .

I've been listening to Animal Collective from the beginning. Back when their music wasn't "accessible" for the hipster kids and was very primitive and experimental. There isn't another band in the world that I've felt so connected to through lyrics and sound. I can't explain it, really. I've taken a lot of psychedelics in my life, and they were always the best to listen to in that state of mind, even sober. That chapter of my life has been over for a long time, though. I still love them but Centipede Hz fucking sucked, and that new single "Floridada" sounds like this is going to be another shitty pop record from them. I've been disappointed in how hipstery they've become, seems like they're losing their originality. I did see them at Pitchfork Festival before Centipede was released, they played a great mix of old and new. I was pretty much front row on a high dosage of mushrooms and it was all gravy man.

Their experimental stuff was gold, it is a shame that they've become so different.  They've become super poppy and I've noticed a lot of more "bohemian" Coachella type girls who use the term wanderlust and wear those big floppy hats listening to them.  I also heard Floridada for the first time yesterday and it was really not my cup of tea.

During hurricane Sandy several friends and I got stranded in a dorm room and robo-tripped and watched Oddsac.  I miss dosed it was supposed to be six triple C's and then three increments of two until you reached twelve pills, but I was like fuck it and took all twelve at once and they hit me like a freight train.  I vaguely remember parts of the album, someone was playing in the dirt, I think Geologist maybe, and then I remember curling up in the fetal position and closing my eyes and having nothing but these red-ish purple triangles come at me.  But yeah I do need to get a copy/watch Oddsac and not be half dead in a shopping cart while watching it.

I'm so disappointed in AnCo. They released another track from the new album to promote an app they came out with on iOS. The track is so fucking terrible, and I really think this new album is going to be even worse than Centipede. I read an interview where Brian says this is their "Ramones album", and the way he describes it is the exact opposite of their unique sound I've known and loved for all these years. They really did peak at ODDSAC and should have stopped making records and kept their legacy.

Yeah Animal Collective seem to be declining overall, last thing they put out that I really enjoyed was "Fall Be Kind". I was so disappointed in "Centipede", I haven't even heard anything from the new one (partially because I'm not as big a fan anymore, but I also want to go into the album fresh). That Ramones comment kind of has me intrigued though. Sounds like a ridiculous expectation/comparison to make, but they've changed up their sound plenty of times, from album to album.

AC isn't what they used to be, but their crew has put out so much good music over the years, I'll probably always give them the benefit of the doubt. In addition, they recently (six months ago?) put out an enjoyable live album, "Live at 9:30", which I'd recommend checking out if you haven't already.

Panda Bear's solo material has consistently been great too though, for what that's worth. Hoping for some Noah song's on the new album, they're pretty much always the album standouts. I got to see him touring for "Person Pitch", and he played the upstairs of a church in Philly, so we got to just sit and chill in the pews while he played, accompanied by a dope projection (there was a vintage erotic video of people having sex on a roller coaster) presentation. I believe he played the album all the way through, plus a couple other tracks ("Laughed for a World Filled with Fantasy", was one I think). By far my favorite show I've ever attended.

Also, has everyone heard this?
panda bear - marijuana makes my day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS_2YEIX2CE#)
It's been around for a bit, but I just found out about it.

And more relevant to the topic, I saw Atlas Sound open up for Deerhunter a few weeks back.

I really like Atlas Sound, and got kind of drunk during his opening set.
During intermission, I hit the merch table, got Logos on LP, a few more drinks, and by the time of the third Deerhunter song, I was "flagged" by security, and asked to leave. I was drunk, but I def wasn't wasted. I wasn't starting shit or harassing girls, I was just chilling at the bar drinking. I really feel like it was unnecessary. I prefer Atlas Sound, so I wasn't as mad, but that new Deerhunter album "Fading Frontier" is pretty good, so I wouldn't have minded hearing some more of that.

Instead I drunkenly walked 20 minutes back to my place in the cold, while my friends got to see the rest of the set.

I'm seeing Oneohtrix Point Never there in a month, so I'm def gonna keep my drinking in check that night, cause he's one of my favorites and I'm not trying to get flagged again.

I had the option to go but passed and now I am kinda regretting it.  I saw them like 10 years ago or so.  Some shitty OzzFest tour and and it was such a phoned in set that I figured this one would be as well but I've heard nothing but good things about every show a friend of mine has gone to.

Yea I saw them on the tour for 13 and they sounded great but were playing a lot from that album. This set was rad, Dirty Women was kind of out of nowhere, but it played like a greatest hits set. Ozzy's never been much of a mover but you can tell he's getting old.

yeah i saw them in nyc last week. theyve only been playing their newest tracks when they've played live in past years. last time i saw them they played all of centipede, summertime clothes, did you see the words, and purple bottle (a real treat). i think the only ones they played that weren't on the new album were daily routine, bees, and loch raven. apparently they did a cover too but i had no clue what it was.

DAMN "loch raven" would have been amazing to see live

I'd be mad if I went to see them and they just played a bunch of "centipede" stuff

"Words" and "purple bottle" must have been great tho

I think I've seen mostly mediocre reviews of the new album. It's not the best, but overall I like it, and there's a few standout tracks.
I think it's so dumb they used that "floridada" song as their lead single tho, sounds like some annoying lame Beach Boys shit

I have Animal Collective's entire discography and love every single album and song they've put out, up until these last two albums. When I was using psychedelics heavily I was obsessed with them. Even now, being sober for many years they're still one of my favorite bands. I can still listen to their extremely weird noise albums and get into it.

Once I heard Centipede Hz I started getting bummed on their sound...it just didn't sound like AnCo to me. When I read they were coming out with a new album, I was stoked and thought this would maybe be their 'redemption' from Centipede. Boy was I wrong, I could barely make it through Painting With. If it wasn't for their recognizable voices I would think I was listening to a completely different band. Without them actually being creative and getting weird, using tons of unique samples and sounds, their appeal just seems to evaporate into thin air. I kinda feel like it's never going to be good from here on out, and it pains me to say that because they...were...such an amazing band.

If anyone is in Philadelphia on June 3rd, Modern English will be playing at Johnny Brenda's with Dark Blue.

I could not be more stoked, as Modern English is fantastic, as Mesh And Lace is a solid album from start to finish. True post-punk.

And Dark Blue always delivers, as they have acquired an exquisite formula to creating superior music, often nodding to Roxy Music, Blitz (Second Empire Justice), and John Cale.

i feel like this is how just about every show i go to is like. im such a boring mellow person every day, but when i go to a show i cant hold anything back. you cant go see a rock and roll show and just stand there looking like youre waiting for the bus. thats fucking lame. its the worst when the crowd is so boring that the band gets upset and gives a mediocre performance. some people dont understand that a concert is an interaction between the band and the crowd. show some fucking excitement and appreciation for what these bands do.

anyway, i just saw iggy and josh homme last night and that was incredible. probably the show ive been host hyped about my entire life and they fucking killed it. ive seen the stooges and qotsa and i think this show topped them all. the crowd was mostly older people, so not much rocking out from the crowd, but we delivered on cheers and hand claps. they played pretty much everything off the new album, a few good ones off the idiot and just about everything off lust for life which i wasnt really expecting more than the passenger, success and lust for life. they played sixteen like third song in and i totally lost it. during the encore they played fall in love with me, which i didnt expect at all. everything was amazing and im so happy that i got to see it. and ive never really been a fan of the song nightclubbing, but holy shit did they kill that song. the best ive ever heard it without a doubt. the only thing that was a bummer was that my dad was supposed to go with me, but couldnt because he broke his ankle last week, and that they didnt play any stooges songs. the songs from lust for life definitely made up for it though, and im super stoked that my fiancee got to come with me and see it. she bought me dinner, an album, and a shirt too.

still so stoked on that show. not having a very fun time at work right now though.

I was in Detroit for work and went and saw Joe Satriani last night. Pretty fucking awesome. Melt Banana/Melvins/Napalm Death next Saturday. I've seen all 3 multiple times and they all kill it live, so when I saw all 3 on the same bill I was fucking stoked. Mutoid Man/Sweet Cobra on Sunday in Chicago.

Like I said, none of them ever disappoint. To be honest I've never seen Mutoid Man. I've known all 3 of them personally for years and love the records, so figure that one out.

Also, apparently Converge is playing "Jane Doe" in its entirety at Roadburn tomorrow. I was debating taking out some of my savings to fly to the Netherlands to go, but ultimately (and probably wisely) decided against it.

I've seen them upwards of 50 times and I've never seen them play "Jane Doe" and I don't think they've ever played "Phoenix in Flight." Those are my 2 favorite songs on the record, so I envy those who got to witness them played live (though judging by the crowds they draw nowadays,  I doubt most will care about "Phoenix in Flight").

Really? I wasn't aware of that. I saw a live 2016 recording on youtube of them playing Jane Doe as an encore. I've never had the pleasure of seeing them live but I can see what you're saying about doubting most will care about those particular songs.

That still shouldn't take away from how heavy AWLWLB was. Still one of my favorite recent records to date.

Well, I just got back from Roadburn and the two Converge sets were fucking epic. On Saturday they played a set comprised of slower songs with Chelsea Wolfe on vocals (Wretched World was my favorite).

Also saw Diamanda Galas, Amen Ra, Hell, Pentagram, Hemelbestormer (shout out to Distant Rumor!), Alkerdeel, Oranssi Pazuzu and a ton of other great bands.

It was my first time going there and I loved every second of it. The festival pass was not cheap by any means, but well worth every cent. Highly recommended.

I think there are a handful of songs from that record that kids will always be into (Fault & Fracture, The Broken Vow), I can see how Jane Doe could become one of them. Not to sound elitist, I've definitely noticed how the crowds have changed, and it's not even a matter of people liking some records and disliking others, sometimes it seems like people had never heard the records before, they just go to blow off some steam. That's always existed but it seems like it's gotten worse over the past few years. I've even seen that kind of shit at super DIY basement/warehouse shows; people just go to get fucked up and act like asshole. Either way, next time they're within 3 states I'll go see them.

So that Melt Banana/Melvins/Napalm Death show was last night. The venue that it was at notoriously sounds like shit, which was definately proven with Melt Banana and Melvins sets (due to their use of electronics/effects) but they both fucking ruled regardless. While watching MB I realized I had never seen them open a show, so it was a lot shorter than usual which was a slight bummer. The Melvins always kill it. I'd only seen Napalm once prior, and they were definitely the highlight  of the night, easilly. I got my old man mosh on during "Mentally Murdered," Suffer the Children," "Lucid Fairytale," and "Adversarial. They also played "Conform" by SEIGE, which was a fucking treat. Apparently Buckethead's here tonight too.

Saw The Body and Full Of Hell last tuesday on the local venue. It was a really sick show. I've seen FoH 2 times in less than a year and this one was even better (and longer). Tickets were a little pricey for what people are used to here so there werent too many kids and people barrely moved, which was a little odd since FoH pumps so much energy into their performance. The Body was like listening to a horror movie soundtrack, really hauting and despair inducing. Sickass performances!

Saw The Body and Full Of Hell last tuesday on the local venue. It was a really sick show. I've seen FoH 2 times in less than a year and this one was even better (and longer). Went to the same gig in Switzerland. Really enjoyed both bands, The Body crushes it!

I saw Stephen O'Malley last year at amplifest and thought it was so fucking borring. Almost 1h of guitar buzz. Only cool shit was seeing all those giant amps and shit, that was cool.  It really isnt my type of thing...

Saw Bob Mould in Chicago last Friday, and it was easily among the greatest things I have ever seen. I mean that in the most literal sense. Observe:
Bob Mould In A Free Land at Metro May 6, 2016 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfN4K_0-TWI#)
This is the third time I've seen him, and though the other times were great, this fucking blew them away. He played like 10 Husker D songs too, with "Celebrated Summer," "Something I Learned Today," "Hardly Getting Over It," "I Apologize," among them.

Also Sunn 0))) sucks ass and everyone who says they enjoy them is lying.

The place was filled with so much smoke that they could have just put mannequins up there in robes and played a CD of Kannon, nobody would have known different.

For all you (probably like 2 or 3 of you) sad depressed pop-punk enthusiasts,

I saw Jeff Rosenstock last night. 4th time seeing him, 5th if you include Bomb The Music Industry!, he puts on such a high-energy show. Fucking loved it. Also seeing Modern Baseball with Joyce Manor next week and I'm excited.

Been getting into them recently. Got the offer to see them perform (actually at the same place I was talking about when I started this thread) but I had something going on.

I went to see The Brian Jonestown Massacre about 2 weeks ago. They played for 3 hours straight. It was a really good show, but they didn't play a lot of the classics/fan favorites that I thought they would. I was still very pleased with the set list though. A lot of the new songs sound like the Their Satanic Majesties Second Request/Take It From The Man era of the band. Very cool.

Oh man I love Jeff Rosenstock, BTMI and ASOB were a big part of high school for me. Never got a chance to see them though, and he hardly comes to Canada so as of yet I have no live experiences with Jeff.

I've never seen them live before so I'm not entirely sure what their shows are like, this will be my first time. I've heard nothing but good things about their performances, though, so expect to have some fun. I'd give their albums 'Sports' and 'You're gonna miss it all' a listen or two before heading out. Great lyrics. Real catchy.

I got to see BTMI on the leg of their last ever tour. I was fresh out of knee-surgery (like three weeks fresh) so I didn't get to really go nuts at the show but it was fucking amazing. Jeff immediately started touring solo after the split and I've seen him every time he stops in Arizona. He puts on such a chaotic/fun show experience. Super funny interaction between him and the crowd too. He covered a fucking Lenny Kravitz song as an encore this last time I saw him, hahaha.

last 3 bands i saw live were blonde redhead, tortoise, & explosions in the sky.

eits were sick as usual, the fox theatre in Oakland was a nice venue for them. their lights were really good, beside the music. something new from seeing them in smaller venues where that's kinda harder.

blonde redhead's live shows are tooo good. like their music is already haunting in a good way, live is like x10 more. the couple in front of me couldn't stop making out. also, my friend told me she got in free bc she once gave one of the guys in BR a foot job.

it was my first time seeing tortoise & i couldn't have been more impressed. I've been listening to them since i first watched photosynthesis, and am wondering why it took me this long. they played 2 encores. it was at the great American music hall, and for their second encore, I got up to the balcony to check the whole stage. some dude in front was rocking out all its crazy like, definitely feeling  himself.

I definitely agree with you on that but I feel like them being on a bigger label had a bit to do with that. They self-recorded their first two albums.

Just came back from Sepultura. I missed the opportunity of going to a concert in my area when I was a teen, but made good on this one. Ten years, apparently. It was amazing. I think Igor was still in the band by then... I have no idea of who the new drummer is. Looks pretty young, definitely not even in his 30s. Holy fucking shit this is the best concert I've been to in my whole life.

Sepultura is fucking rad! I'm not really fond of their newer stuff but their new drummer, Eloy Casagrande, is trully a beast and he is really young too (25 years).
SEPULTURA - STUDIO DIARY 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8vneH5RKt4#)

Max and Igor are coming to a venue near me playing all the "Roots" album in november. Not my favourite by them (Beneath the Remains all the way) but I'm debating in going to it. It's going to be fun I'm sure!

^^ i wish a could catch black sabbath near me! I think i'll not have the to catch them live unfortunately...

Just went to amplifest this past week.

I fell like past year it was a lot better, at least for my taste, but it was a good time too. Some let downs and some surprises. Neurosis was one of the most powerful performances i've witness, really heavy and emotive too. Oathbreaker was rad, 3rd time i've seen them and the best one for sure. I've had a little chat with their guitarrist before it because he's a skater too, really cool guy! Then it was all about Downfall of gaia, caspian and mono was nice too (a little too long maybe). Oh and Minsk, fucking crushing! Maybe the biggest surprise and it would be my favourite show if they played a little more (they had problems in the beggining, had to cut the set in half).

Then the let downs. Kayo dot was pretty bad, almost embarrassing, like they didnt know their own music, really sloppy playing. Hope Drone was uninteresting as fuck, Altarage a copy cat of Portal, the black heart rebellion a try hard performance that felt too forced, and then Nevoa that is the hype band of the portuguese scene and just came to me as a lazy effort to be hip...

Waiting for the next year with a better line up too!

Damn dude! That must have been sick! Deathcore is a rare thing here in Portugal but I'm a fan. Whitechapel kinda suck now but the other ones are still decent i guess (I saw SS about a year and half ago in Spain with hermida and it was such a cool performance).

The most recent shows I went were Malevolence (uk) and Nasty and holy shit, it was heavy.

The Cleveland show was amazing too. I'm going to be sore for a while from slamming all over the place. I keep telling myself that I'm getting too old to be going nuts like I do at shows, but the second the music starts I have be in the pit.

I have seen sun kil before and it was waaaaay better - I am a huge fan of any justin broadrick project so when i found out that him and mark were collaborating i was stoked. wasn't into the album much but didn't have high expectations because its a weird mix of styles. Still was cool to see justin and mark on stage together but wish it was jesu opening up for sun kil or vice versa. would be the ultimate show

I got clowned on pretty hard for enjoying that record when it first came out (upitty crusties can be dicks, even to 15 year olds). Haven't listened to it in a few years, but the last time I did, it held up pretty well for me. Leftover Crack however always has been and will forever be complete fucking garbage (so forced and corny). I went to see some friends open for them in some basement in like 2002 and Stza got super fucked up, said he was refusing to play (didn't say why) and sat on his macbook outside until the person who owned the house/the rest of the band guilt tripped him into playing. He performed really shitty on purpose and some kid punched him in the face, after which he went back out the van. Just dropped the mic and walked out, no confrontation on his part or anything. More entertaining than any of their records.
Ara is the shit though. Super sweet guy.

Just saw mark kozelek ramble for 3 hours over Jesu riffs. It got kind of awkward toward the end.

were you at the LA show? I was there too. I have seen sun kil before and it was waaaaay better - I am a huge fan of any justin broadrick project so when i found out that him and mark were collaborating i was stoked. wasn't into the album much but didn't have high expectations because its a weird mix of styles. Still was cool to see justin and mark on stage together but wish it was jesu opening up for sun kil or vice versa. would be the ultimate show
I was at the SF show. See, I like the album, it's weird but it works. A lot of people were confused and thought it was one opening for the other though. The show was too long and Mark's an egomaniac and an asshole. He mentioned several times how many homes he owns... It was great for the first 2 hours, then he played some new solo song of his about a Muhammad Ali poem "me we" and it was bad, it totally lost the crowd. By the end there were probably 50 people in the place, you could hear the bartenders working.

Godflesh is going on tour next year though, that should be great.

Damn Nallid, that sucks. I would pay a big amount of money to see a Jesu gig in solo. Silver and Conqueror are one of my favourite releases of all time. I like Godflesh too but Jesu just goes the extra mile for me, so fuckin' emotional. Broadrick is a genious.

Today I saw Brujeria for the second time this year, this time with Shane Embury on stage (like it should always be). It was fun as fuck, and the opening bands, 2 portuguese death metal acts were crazy good too. Great night.

My brother got me tickets to see Snoop Dogg, Bone Thugs, Tha Dogg Pound and Warren G for "Christmas" (we were both obsessed with all of these artists as kids, so he really just wanted a justification to buy tickets and I'm fine with that) and the show was last night, and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised (when a bill is stacked w/ groups like that, I get cynical). Snoop's set was "meh" in points, and fucking awesome in others (that's just him I realize), Tha Dogg Pound's set was too short and DJ Quik was replaced with Twista (had to have been last minute) which was a definite bummer. Overall though, the show was sick.

Some specific highlights:
Kurupt being visually drunk and grinding on random chicks on stage (who were probably there because the won tickets from a radio station or something) standing with their boyfriends.
Warren G coming out in, and there is no other description for these, straight up dad clothes (like Eddie Bauer had a sale) with a big ass blunt in his hand. For some reason I thought/think that shit was badass. Then he did a Nate Dogg tribute medley, capping shit off with "Regulate" (of course).
Twista came out with a setlist and set it up by his monitor up front. A FUCKING SETLIST! I can't recall another Hip-Hop show where a group/artist had a visible setlist. Once again, for some reason, I though was badass.
Bone Thugs doing "Fo tha Love of $", "Notorious Thugs" and "Thug Luv" WELL all without very important guest artists. I was pretty shocked by "Notorious Thugs," I must say.
"Ain't No Fun If the Homies Can't Get None"

I will also point out, that DJs need to stop the fucking airhorn. For the love of god, stop! It sounds fucking stupid and they do it constantly. They did it during "Tha Crossroads"!

Caught Japandroids in Toronto this past Friday. Killer show, I unfortunately missed the opener (Craig Finn of The Hold Steady) but Japandroids were awesome, those two guys can make a lot of fucking noise. They closed the show playing "Stranded" by The Saints (Ragdoll skates to it in one of the Black Label videos) with Craig Finn on vocals, a perfect way to end the show.

I have yet to see Napalm live. They played a few years ago close by my hometown but I couldnt go :/

I went to my first show in germany this weekend. I saw Brutality Will Prevail, Cruel Hand and No Turning Back in Nuremberg.
Sincerely I was pretty disapointed with the "scene". The crowd was dead as fuck, just 2 or 3 random kids doing karate moves on the huge hole in front of the stage, nobody else really moving. When NTB started the things got better but I was never a huge fan of them so bahhh, bummed. A line-up like this in Portugal would have been a diferent history.

Last night, saw Tortoise, and it was fucking sick.

How tight they perform their stuff live is unreal, I don't think I've ever witnessed a band that has their shit together that much before. All the more insane considering they all pretty much played all the instruments over the course of the show, and played all of it perfecto (except for one song they restarted due to monitor issues)

They were great. Really put their hearts and souls into the show and I really appreciated it. Our crowd though, my god you wouldve thought they were dead. I don't know if it was because everyone was a bit older (I'm 29 and felt like the youngest one there) or if everyone is just lame, but there was no pit, maybe about 10-15 people clapping after the songs, just no crowd interaction whatsoever. I just don't understand how people can pay money to see a band play and just stand there looking indifferent. Have some fun and make some damn noise for the band. Make them feel like you care. After their last song they just got off the stage and didn't say "thank you" or anything and I don't blame them. The crowd sucked. I went up to all the guys I could find afterward and shook their hands and thanked them for coming just because I really feel like bands should feel appreciated and I seriously felt bad for them.

The crowds have changed, mate. The older fans are generally too old (i.e. me) to go nuts (I do my thing when necessary) and the younger fans were raised with shit bands who put on boring shows and despite their tastes changing, the damage was done and they're often satisfied to just stand with their arms crossed. Not trying to seem superior or any of that shit, every once in a while a crowd brings it, but it's just a different world. The best is seeing people getting yelled at for moshing at Hardcore shows. If you don't like it, go back to the mall.

i get that the older you get, the more you have to hold back. my neck will probably be sore for the next few days. the past few shows that i got really crazy at made me hurt for a few days after, but i cant help myself. im the most boring, quiet, no emotion showing person you'll ever meet, but put a decent band in front of me and that all changes. its like theres a spirit of rock and roll that comes and lets you just let loose and go crazy and i just dont know how some people can ignore it. thats why i go to shows.

I saw Deftones like a month ago and now I'm going to see Touche Amore with Swain the next wednesday.

Deftones was good but could be better if they played less songs from the last album (or at least the good songs. Prayers/triangles has to be one of the worst songs they ever made). Still one of my top favourite bands of all time.

Touche Amore gonna be sick, love their stuff, but I'm kinda bummed that is Swain opening. Not that I dont like Swain, is that the show in Porto is with Code Orange that I love and I already saw Swain like 3 times. Gonna be sick regardless

Some friends of mine told one of Thou's guitar players (Matt I believe) that I had just gotten out of prison for beating someone with a tire iron and use door money to fund a heroin ring (NOTE: I booked the show) because my friends are stupid and thought it was funny for some reason. They got bummed when I told them they were getting fucked with. Every time I've seen them since its been awkward.

Cloud Rat are homies and are they ever not touring? Kind of curious about those Des Moines shows. Never seen a show there and I'm curious about their scene, Iowa City and Quad Cities used to have some dope shit going on.

This will be the first concert I've ever been to in Des Moines, or I think even Iowa for that matter.  I'm from South Dakota and usually drive to Twin Cities or Omaha for concerts.  I think they get a decent amount of good bands coming through in that area.  I haven't really listened to cloud rat much but I will definitely get familiar with some of their material beforehand.

Saw Eagles of Death Metal last night and that was a blast. Great crowd this time, not too crazy, but everyone was dancing and having fun and actually cheering and making noise for the band, which is what needs to happen. Boots is such a great performer and really gets everyone into it which made the show super fun. For their encore, he came out and played midnight creeper by himself then the band came out and did a cover of Moonage Daydream. Thats not even in my top 5 Bowie songs, but I almost teared up a little when they first went into it. Dave switched out his flying V for an all black Les Paul on that song and just tore it to shreds at the end. The only way the could've played the song any better would've been if Bowie himself resurrected and came on stage. From there they played some heavy hitters off the first two albums and the crowd started getting rowdy. I ruined my shoes in the pit because I cant help myself. I think they ended with Speaking In Tongues, but right before that Boots said something like "I love you motherfuckers", took his red Maton guitar, which from my understanding is one of a kind specially built for him, and Pete Townsended the shit out of it while my mouth just hung open. It was amazing. He gave the pieces of the guitar to people in the audience too which was really sick. Easily one of the best shows I've ever seen.

If you get a chance to see them play a small venue show, go. You won't regret it.

The only sort of bad thing was this one overly obnoxious older dude who kept taking toots out of his coke vile the whole show, but he was only next to me for a few songs. I saw a few other people get pissed at him for falling into them and shit like that. I thought it was pretty funny that he thought he was being discreet about the coke, but it was impossible not to notice.

Des Moines has a pretty legit scene. A lot of bands from Lincoln used to go out there to play shows and vice versa. I've been to a few shows out there, and always had fun.

I've come to find smaller city's scenes are usually pretty legit; the holier than thou, cool guy attitudes are harder to come by and they don't seem to take shit for granted like people in bigger cities tend to.

Anyway, I got a couple free tickets to go see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson in a couple of weeks. I've seen Bob Dylan a couple of times (was pretty underwhelmed, but fuck it, I got to see him in person) but have never seen Willie. I'm pretty stoked.

Thou was incredible as always.  Also, I was in the smoking area and saw some dudes wearing denim sitting at a table at a neighboring bar.  I thought there was no way in hell it was actually him ,but it was Riley Hawk.  I checked his Instagram the next day and his band petyr is touring through the Midwest right now.

Last night I was pretty fortunate to see the awesome Lumpy and the Dumpers play live... at a small media center, for what apparently is a cable access show.

I have always had mixed feelings about this band, the Sex Pit 7" was the shit on top of the shit...  regardless, they were great live, pretty wild and  the singer has a pretty great stage presence.

I also had a really strange reality check/old man moment... I looked around kinda tripping out on how young everybody was, thinking that they were a "young persons" hardcore band; didn't take long to realize I was now the "old guy at the show".  Eeks.

Still... catch them live if you can.

Seen Sturgill Simpson a couple of weeks ago for a friends b-day. I had never really heard of him and tried getting youtube hyped prior to the show but none of his stuff really grabbed me. Then he comes out with just a 4 piece band(doing all the lead guitar work himself) and I was blown away and had a pretty good time. Suffice to say he's just one of those acts you have to see live to appreciate.

I went to see Hazel English last Wednesday  at the bootleg theater in LA. The show was exceptional. Her band sounded perfect. Her debut album " Just give in/Never Going Home" is easily one of my favorite releases this year.  Sounds like Angel Olson meets Diiv if you dig that  definitely give her a listen. Real dreamy stuff. Perfect music for cuffing season.  "Never Going Home" and "Control" are good tracks to start with.

It was a couple weeks ago, but I finally got to see Jeff Rosenstock. He played Call The Office in London, ON (it's a somewhat famous punk venue) and it was incredible. I've been going there for years and this easily in the top 5 shows I've ever seen there. Had the chance to talk to him afterwards a little bit, my girlfriend knows what a fan I am and wanted to take a picture of Jeff and I. She took about 6 and I started to feel bad, but Jeff was a good sport. Got to chat with Laura Stevenson afterwards as well. She was super approachable and appreciative of so many people coming out to the show.

I went to Lollapalooza yesterday and a number of performances which were all really good, but the best one by far was Mac Demarco. Like it was essentially a spiritual experience. I've got a ticket to see Surf Curse in September, a 3 day pass to Riot Fest, and a ticket for Beach Fossils in October. These next couple months are gonna be great.

So I saw The Dillinger Escape Plan almost 2 weeks ago and got my face melted. I was hit in the face by Ben's guitar when he jumped into the pit and started swinging it like crazy ahah got a small bruise near my left eye and shit. Totally worth it.

Then 2 days ago I went to this fest in Portugal and saw Nothing, King Krule, Ho99o9 and At The Drive-In.
Nothing was good, but I saw then last year and it was better.
I dont really know king krule's music but I was wocked, really good show.
Ho99o9 was the gig of the day, holy shit, I wasnt expecting that. Everyone was going apeshit and the moshpit was massive. They made a new fan.
ATDI was a mixed feeling, it was good, but not that good. Lots of new songs that arent bad, but not classic level. Cedric is fat, tired and looks like he's trying to go crazy just because he "needs to".
After that Chet Faker or whatever the guy is called now played aswell but I almost fell asleep. It was a good day all in all.

Stoked to see some Jeff Rosenstock love on here. Caught him last month and he never fails to disappoint. He is unquestionably my favorite songwriter.

I also got to see The Melvins last month, but the police shut the show down because it was apparently "at capacity". Upon talking to more people after the fact it sounds more like somebody inside was tired of being pushed around and called 911 themselves.

This is the first thing like this I've ever heard of. The boat is more of a touristy thing. You can go for cruises on the weekends for $40 or dinner cruises for about $80. People rent it for weddings and big events, but most of that stuff is a little rich for my blood. I'd probably never go on it if something like this weren't happening so I'm pretty excited.

METZ is probably my favorite out of all the bands. They're a really loud, noisy punk band. Preoccupations and Protomartyr are more post punk and Tyvek sounds pretty garage rock to me.

we had tickets to see ADTI maybe a year or two ago and the show got canceled because cedric couldnt sing or something like that. we got our money back and i promised my wife that id take her to the next show they did. their new album came out before they scheduled another show in detroit and i couldnt make it through the album so i never bought us tickets. their over the top edgyness that i loved as a teenager just isnt appealing as an adult and i dont think i could pretend to be into it at one of their shows, especially since the energy they had in the early days is almost totally gone.

i ended up telling my wife that tickets were sold out or costed some absurd amount of money and that was why we couldnt go. i felt a little bad about it because she seemed like she really wanted to see them, but i just couldnt do it. i suffered through an XX show with her to make up for it though. shes a better person. she comes to all the shitty shows i want to see and never complains.

I saw Roky Erickson the other night. It was a good show but a little weird and sad.

I had misgivings about the show because the last time he was around I watched a YouTube video from the night before where he was clearly not all there and I opted not to go. This time I figured what the hell, he's a legend either way and I might not get the opportunity again.

So he takes the stage and sits in a chair with guitar while the band cuts loose. He probably only hits 70% of the lyrics for the first few songs. His voice is more pinched but still sounds good. When they pause between songs he just stares into the middle distance and says nothing. Fans say, "I love you" and the band guys say "He loves you back". Eventually he gets more into it and his percentage increases. The band is all young guys but they are really good. Roky gets more animated while singing and hits some bits of the high stuff like he was 18 again and possibly enjoying it. Played nearly every song I would have wanted to hear. The whole show he said nothing.

I enjoyed the music a lot but it was hard to tell if Roky wanted to be there or if it was a quasi Weekend At Bernie's thing.

Dude is now 70 and I'm not sure how many tours he has left in him so I'm glad I went but it did feel a bit off.

Four Year Strong, Action Bronson, The Story So Far, Ministry, Vic Mensa, Cold Beat, Bad Brains, The Regrettes, Wu-Tang Clan, Taking Back Sunday, Versus, Cap'N Jazz (their set was hilarious), Pennywise, Dinosaur Jr, Prophets of Rage, Jawbreaker. It's been a great three days.

how was bad brains? id love to see them. and was wu tang any good? i saw them once and it was awful. only like 5 of them showed up. no gza. no rae. no ghost. it was basically the method man show for 45 minutes then they called it quits. i was pissed that i stood through 2 hours of shitty local rappers to get such a half ass wu tang show.

did you see queens of the stone age? they were playing, right?

Bad Brains was awesome. The pit was insane. I thought it was gonna be kind of a letdown because HR isn't young and angry anymore but I'm glad to say I couldn't have been more wrong. Wu-Tang was fucking lit too. They played most of 36 Chambers and Raekwon did Ice Cream and they played a new song too. They brought two kids on stage because Wu-Tang is for the children. They had one of my favorite sets, I'd see them again if you get a chance. Queens of the Stone Age was playing but I didn't see them because I haven't listened to them a ton and Taking Back Sunday (who I LOVE) was at the same time.

Last week I saw AJJ (formally Andrew Jackson Jihad) and Streetlight Manifesto back to back, and they were both commemorating records they put out in 2006 that had a pretty big impact on a 16 year old me. It was pretty special to see them play both records front to back.

The boat show last Friday was pretty sick. Tyvek was the first band and we watched them for a little bit. They were decent. We skipped the next band who was kind of like a deep house synthy band so that we could hang out on the top deck. Preoccupations were next and I was pretty stoked to see them, but honestly they sounded like shit. I don't think of them as a noise band, but they definitely wanted to be that night. Half the show they weren't even "playing" just being loud with no structure. I stuck around long enough to watch them play Bunker Buster then bailed back to the top deck which was honestly a lot more fun. They had DJs spinning records up there. People watching was great too. METZ was next and they kicked ass. Great show and they sounded a lot better than the previous bands. They played almost all the songs I wanted to hear. The only bummer was that the stage was really low and I couldn't see the drummer.  We ended up leaving after their set, which I sort of felt bad about because we missed Protomartyr, and they were the ones headlining the whole thing, but I've never been a huge fan of theirs. The main reason we left was because it was 11:30 and neither me or my wife had eaten anything since breakfast. Overall, it was definitely worth $20 to see METZ and ride the boat around.

saw the Melvins a night ago.  even though I don't love the new album, the new songs were so much better 'live'.  I generally think they are a waaaay better live band than studio band (except for Senile Animal...that is the best sound production on a melvins album)

A friend of mine recently gave me his copy of Senile Animal, and it quickly became my new favorite Melvins record. I'm not as well acquainted with their new material, but I'm a big fan and they're a fun band to see whether you know everything or don't. I think I told this story already, but they played here in July but got shut down right before they were gonna play Hung Bunny. :(

On the complete opposite spectrum, I saw Paul McCartney last night with my parents. Like pretty much everyone, The Beatles were basically my introduction to music as a whole when I was super young, so it goes without say that seeing Paul was a real goddamn treat. We were on the main floor too which was absurdly expensive, but my dad has been a huge fan his whole life so he insisted on getting good seats.

Saw the Pixies on Friday. I know some fans might be turned off by Kim no longer playing with the band, but Charles, Joey and David still put on a hell of a show. They played for almost two hours straight with no breaks in between songs. They all sounded amazing and it was one of the cleanest sounding live shows I've ever heard. You could hear everything crystal clear.

I had looked up some youtube shows from this tour and honestly I was a little underwhelmed by the energy of the shows, so going into it I was almost expecting to be let down, but they really did give it their all and I'm really happy I got to see them. They opened with Wave of Mutilation and ended with a slower shortened version of the same song before playing Bone Machine as their encore. My only bit of criticism was that they played too many songs off the new album which I didn't care for. I would've loved the hear U-Mass, Mr. Grieves, No. 13 or Gigantic (I knew they weren't going to play that one) instead of the songs from Head Carrier. They did play Crackity Jones though and I wasn't sure if they would.

Great show though. My wife bought me a Black Francis Coffee mug too.

I'm going to Vegas for work next month and you best your asses I'm going to see Billy Idol.

Saw Billy last week at the house of blues inside mandalay bay. If you've never been to vegas before, it's located towards the end of the strip and I don't know how it was before the shooting, but the place was totally empty compared to the other end. Hardly anyone in the casino or any of the bars outside the venue we were in.

Anyway, the show was decent. It was a really small venue so we had a great view. I don't know how old Billy is, but he looked like he had about 2 hours of makeup done before the show. There were a few points I thought he might have been lip syncing, but he gave a good performance. Steve Stevens looks absolutely hilarious in his old age because he's still dressing like its 1983. He's a serious shredder, but nobody needs to do as many guitar solos as he did. Probably the biggest showboater I've ever seen, but he was entertaining. My wife and I were probably the youngest people there, but the crowd was better than some of the young crowds I'm in with the newer bands I see.  Whole thing was pretty fun and I enjoyed myself, but it wasn't a show I would ever take seriously and that's fine.

Yea I went to the Hollywood Bowl show and I felt like I was in a crowd of corpses. Nobody really got stoked until some Smiths songs were played. What was even better was seeing all the sad faces watching the video that played during Meat is Murder, followed by those same sad faces getting bacon wrapped hot dogs after the show. Other than that it was a great show, I got hyped when he played Speedway

i dont think metz is the most original or interesting band out there, but i think they do a good job at being loud and heavy. im not a big fan of hardcore or any kind of metal, so when i want something thats heavy metz does the trick because they're pretty straight to the point and they stick to pretty basic rock song structures. you know exactly what you're getting when you put on a metz record, and i like that about them.

I saw John Maus last Sunday the 11th, at Union Transfer in Philadelphia.

At first I didn't want to go, cause I figured he'd mostly be playing tracks from his most recent album, that I've only listened to twice.

But he actually had a really good, varied setlist, which mostly followed a chronological order. All the live-versions of the songs from his earlier albums, sounded even better than they did on the records. "Rights for Gays" was probably the crowd favorite/got the biggest reaction.

I think in the second half of the show, only two songs off the newest album even got played, and like four or five "Pitiless Censors" (prob my fav release of his) tracks got played, with the encore of the show being "Believer", which he performed amazingly well.

Seemed so bored, like he was kinda annoyed with John Maus at times, but then he'd do something legit funny. Also just walked the fuck off, immediately after the encore.

godspeed you black emperor last weekend. was some bucket list shit for me. it was awesome, 30 bucks. amazing visuals. they are very tight live. played a bit under 2 hours. didn't play some songs i was looking forward to but when every song is 20 minutes long that's not surprising. they mixed certain parts of different songs together in a few places. ended it with the blaise bailey finnegan III, a great closer. very boring opening band that i don't care to remember the name of.

Some of my friends are going to see Yo La Tengo tonight, but I backed out cause I have other stuff going on.
Did they mostly play new stuff, or was it songs from throughout their discography?

After spending the last few years barely going to any shows, in the last like month and a half, I've seen John Maus, Godspeed You! Black Emperor (for the 2nd time), Nils Frahm, and Gas (Wolfgang Voigt), all at the same venue.

Seeing Peter Hook playing Joy Division and New Order songs, and Panda Bear with Geologist as the opening act, there too within the next month.

@childhood, they played new and old stuff, it was a good mix of both. Here's the setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/yo-la-tengo/2018/the-phoenix-concert-theatre-toronto-on-canada-23ef545f.html

They have so many albums and they could play any of these songs at a drop of the hat, so the setlists vary from show to show. It's a lottery, but you win every time. For example, they didn't play Sugarcube here, but did in the next show. But then they played Yellow Sarong, which they didn't play elsewhere.

Saw AJJ a couple nights ago. My friend's band opened for them and I'm still insanely jealous about it. Then a week from tomorrow I'm seeing Jeff Rosenstock, and hopefully seeing the two back to back will finally motivate me to make music again, because both of those bands are largely the reason I started in the first place.

Went to a TTNG show a few days ago. I am partially to some math rock once in a while, and this time it really hit the spot. And the banter was pretty funny, too.

Oh that's sick. I think I preferred them when they had their original vocalist, but their guitarist is still amazing. Victor Villareal-esque.

They came to Seattle a few months back and I just happened to walk past the venue. I talked to the bouncer and he let me in for free to watch for a few songs. Fuckin awesome. Thank you Chop Suey bouncer.

Saw Earthless about a month ago and it was fucking amazing!  They put on one of the best live shows.  Kikagaku Moyo, from Japan, opened up for them and were mindblowing too.  Psychedelic rock with a sitar.

Caught Propagandhi at the beginning of March. They still bring it.  Been one of my all time favorite bands for over 20 years.

I got burned on Earthless being sold out, but saw Dead Meadow in Brooklyn. Amazing.

Also saw Mac Sabbath again recently. If you don't know, look it up and go see them. You won't be disappointed.

Saw Parquet Courts last night and they were great. Goat Girl opened for them and they had a solid set. It didn't seem like a lot of people knew who they were but I heard a lot of people saying really positive things when they were done. I don't love all of their music but they've got a few good jams and it was just cool seeing a young band from the UK touring and playing to a decent sized crowd in the US on their first time here.

Parquet Courts played a lot of stuff off the new album. Everything they played was great and I think the songs that I didn't really love on the new one were the ones I enjoyed most live. "Before The Water Gets Too High" was a real highlight. They played some classics too that got the crowd going. Crowd was great too, tons of energy. I was dead tired from busting my ass in the yard all day, so I just stood on the edge of the pit, but the fact that people were going wild and nobody was on their phones made it really fun. My only gripe is that the jam they ended with wasn't really that good and I'm only saying it because I've seen them do way better ones. I don't know if it was all improvised, but it just didn't do it like they usually do. Really wish they would've played "Stoned and Starving" instead, but maybe next time.

Overall it was a great show. I'm glad my wife enjoyed it too because I drag her to all the shitty shows I want to go see and we very rarely get to go see something she likes.

Finally got to go see Godspeed You! Black Emperor last Friday at Pappy and Harriet's. One of the best shows I have been to in a long while. Seeing a band like that under the stars in the middle of the desert can be a pretty surreal experience. The sound was amazing and they had some really great visual effects going throughout the show. They used tree reel to reel projectors running different film loops. At one point they were projecting what looked like a civil rights era klan riot, brown people getting jumped by a mob, then you realize it was just a trump rally in Huntington Beach. That was paired with a loop of a plane falling from the sky. The whole show was real heavy.

Saw some random math rock bands at the Neptune on thursday because my buddy had a spare ticket. The crowd was pretty rad and the pit was really fun. Not normally my scene but I had a great time. Mastodon and Primus on friday super fucking rad. Mastodon mostly just played stuff from their two newer albums but played bladecatcher and some other gems. Primus fucking killed like usual. Third time seeing both bands. I think im going to try to go to smaller venues and seeing bands I havent seen before.

Saw Dwarves, Queers, and Screeching Weasel a few years back and it was a really awesome time. Eyehategod would be sick especially in a small little venue like that.

You summed that up pretty well. I felt the same way when Mark Knopfler came with Bob Dylan. Would have loved to see Knopfler but with Dylan attached it just wasn't worth it. No hate on any of his fans but I just couldn't ever get into most of his music. Same with the Beatles. I guess there is just something wrong with me haha. I dont think they're bad musicians or anything its just most of their music doesn't do it for me.

Sorry I haven't returned to this thread so only just saw your post then.

It was at the same venue but two nights apart.

Check out the Drones if you like TFS, it's the same singer- Gareth Liddiard. Sorry if you're Australian as this will be obvious.

King Gizz are great live. Really tight and energy packed. Don't be shy about not liking all their stuff. It's very diverse yet also very repetitive at times. Highly recommend checking a gig if you get the opportunity.

Saw Protomartyr at the House of Vans Detroit thing last night. I've never been a huge fan of these guys. They're not bad at all, but I normally find myself getting bored with their music and wanting to listen to one of the similar sounding post-punk bands who offer up a bit more excitement (Holograms, Preoccupations, IDLES, ect). Anyway, free event, free show, why the hell not? I wasn't expecting much, and honestly almost blew it off because of how much of a shit show it was trying to just get into the concert hall, but their set was way better than I expected. I wouldn't say I was blown away, but definitely left a way bigger fan than I came in as. They sounded great. Better sound than some legit venues I've been to. The singer has this kind of depressed Mark E. Smith thing going on where he kinda mopes around in his spot going between his moaning and shouting lyrics, beer in hand the whole time. The drummer had some really awesome beats. A lot of them kinda felt like fills, but repeated over and over for the full song. No typical kick > snare > kick kick > snare, typical rock drumming which I thought was pretty cool. The guitar and bass players were really good too. They all are very good at what they do.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely see them again.

Saw Clutch shortly before Christmas for what would be my 7th time. Definitely get better each time I've gone to see them. I know a few people will probably say how their older stuff was heavier and what not, but they're definitely a no gimmicks band. Just straight up good rock music. Nice blend of the older pre 2000 stuff into their newest material, too.

Just saw Dark Blue rip their first US show in almost a year. The singer, John Sharkey, flew from Australia to play then flew out. In and out and the show was grand and dialed in terms of sound

. Curious how they pulled it off seeing as the band rarely practices due to Sharkey living in Australia.

yeah the crowd at those types of shows hasn't been my thing for quite sometime. I like doom and drug influenced types of music, I just can't hangout with people who are wasted, it bums me out and I just can't abide being around drunk people while being sober 98% of the time the few prescription meds I take and dope I smoke is for my crippling anxiety and agoraphobia.

being at shows is my job so i'll name some of my favorites from this year:
Roy Ayers
Arthur Verocai (fucking mindblowing)
Joao Donato
Marcos Valle
Azymuth
Destroyer (solo acoustic set)
Innerwave/Eyedress
Michael Seyer
Blarf(Eric Andre,Domi,JD Beck and Thundercat)
pretty much everyone killed at the Ras G Tribute...sets that stuck out to me were MatthewDavid,Daedelus,Flying Lotus and Linafornia)

2 questions:
what's your job?  :P
and wtf is this blarf project? Eric Andre and Thundercat together in a band seems like a genius idea. Or not.

Saw Black Flag last night here in Pittsburgh.

Mike V is a surprisingly good fit as their lead singer. First time I've seen them live. Plus I got to meet him after the show and we talked about skating a bit. Overall a good night.

im a lighting designer. so Eric Andre put out this record on Stones Throw called "cease and desist" it's like DJ Shadow or the Avalanches but on speed and acid and pcp. the live show had very little to do with the record but was pretty fucking entertaining and confrontational.

Saw these guys from North Carolina on Friday night called Jail Socks. 10/10 do recommend if you’re into pop/punk shit. Not generally into it but they had me boppin during their set at our local hardcore venue for sure, even bought some merch and went out of my way to let them know how hard they fucking killed it after the show. They’re on No Sleep Records and their music is available on all streaming platforms.

Then, Closet Goth. Again, not generally my type of music, and I’m not sure if it was just the stage presence or what but I’ll be god damned if they didn’t have the entire crowd in that bitch under hypnosis. Super weird, electronic rock sounds, but really fucking cool, nonetheless. On Bandcamp and Spotify.

MAUL, Piss Poor, Mon$ta Hou$e, and Death Bed are my friends bands, and they all fucking rip. Look them up on Bandcamp if you’re into hardcore shit, you won’t be disappointed.

Another one of my really good friends from Denton TX has a band with her boyfriend and her brother (both also great friends of mine) have a band called Pankey & Fam and they make some great music to cry to. Haha again, Bandcamp for the curious.

Last but not least, fucking DRESS UP!! they have a few albums up on Bandcamp as well and they’re one of, if not my favorite current punk band. They’re all House Park Locs, they all fucking rip as skaters, and they all fucking rip as a band too. One of the heaviest moshes I’ve been in in quite a while.

That’s it for the DIY and homie’s bands.

Last big act I saw was Turnover and Turnstile. If you’re not familiar with these guys, you’re pretty much fucking blowing it! Turnover makes some more great music to cry to, and Tunstile balanced the show out with a nice late 80’s NY punk sound. I know Franz (drummer from turnstile) skates too and he’s actually good! Did a 360 flip on stage right before their set, got me so fucking hyped.

I saw Etuk Ubong last weekend at a small jazz festival. Great nigerian afro beat trumpeter. It was great.

A little while back I saw Jay Rock. Very good aswell, even though he played a shorter set consisting of his faster songs. I love his slower more reflective songs more.

I was able to recently see nigerian afro jazz great Etuk Ubong at a small music festival. Unfortunately they could only afford to bring half his band so the other half was filled up by local musicians. You could tell a bit they hadn't played together much. It was very good regardless!

Seeing Black Moth Super Rainbow tonight, will report back with experience after.

Edit Update: They were fucking great, missed them twice in like 7 years. The only thing that was "mah" was that they are touring the same basic setlist the whole tour (sans a few tweaks), so I already knew what they were going to play, but it nay ruined it.

wayyyy less stressful. especially at the size venues i work at. the biggest house i sometimes fill in at is 1,200 capacity. at that level you can deal with some very specific cue lists and requests. but at the 500-800 capacity level the bands are usually pretty mellow and passive when it comes to lighting direction.

The little lady and I caught the Righteous Brothers out in Vegas not too long ago.  I have to tell you, I was NOT expecting the kick -ass show this turned out to be.  Bill Medley is awesome.  To be his age (79), so sharp and witty, with so much energy,  sounding even better live than in the studio, just a top-notch showman all-around.

Bucky Heard also does an amazing job filling in for the late, Bobby Hatfield.  You ever get a chance, see this show.  It's very upbeat and NOT even close to the downer I was expecting.  Was also surprised by some of the songs, which I recognized and loved, but DIDNT know were theirs until that night.

* Forgot to mention, also got to meet them and the band back stage after the show and chat for a few.  Totally humble, sincere, down to earth people that look you in the eye as they shake your hand and give you their full attention.  You can tell they really appreciate their fans

The only band I see live anymore is Ghost, they're like pop satan metal. They have a whole back story/story line that ties into the stage performance and costumes. Its more like a Broadway show than music. It's entertaining, high energy shows. Pretty nerdy

Not my video, just a random one from YT. Audio sounds like shit probably because cell phone and it was a festival.

Front and center for the Traveling McCourys and Sam Bush bands. After they each played a set, they all came out and did a set together.   During the McCourys set, Ronnie McCoury used Bush's elec Mandolin to play an amazing Bird Song that he dedicated to the late Robert Hunter.  First time I've been to state college PA in 20 years. Spots everywhere too. No JJ sighting though.

Bjork last week. Super expensive show (88 euros minimum) but it was worth it. Visually at least. Musically, meh. She's still an uber-great singer but there were no keyboards or guitar to flesh out the sound harmonically IMHO (like it was 7 flutes / computer guy / drummer / her)

All were great, really. I am, more or less, just checking off bucket list of bands to see at this point, before they are no more... Pink Floyd would be nice if you could get them to hook it up. Not many left on my list, but I am extremely disappointed that I have not seen Pink Floyd.
