Now did that fella play strings for Richard Hell and The Voidoids?

Earl Scruggs plays banjo but the invention of playing your stringed instrument with the tuners instead of fretting the string gives him a lotta points in my book, I also am an Eddie Van Halen fan and I suppose Tom Morello and Thurston Moore are cool dudes too. I'll go with Greg Ginn though, he's not a "polished shredder" playing with a shit ton of effects/clean tone/that typa thing and he doesn't have that "prog rock" typa thing either but he's raw as fuck and can solo/play lead very well in my opinion and utilizes some jazz scales that prob weren't used in a lotta types of music before he came along. I don't have a black flag tattoo yet but I need ta get one.

john mcgeoch from magazine, visage, siouxie and the banshees, and PiL is a hell of a guitarist. his playing on the banshees "JuJu" is probably my favorite effort of his. i dont know much about guitar, but i feel like he had a really unique approach to his playing but never sounded show-offy.

Agreed. He only played downstrokes and he played entire live shows that way at incredible speeds with lots of chord changes. Plus he played barre chords, not power chords, contrary to popular belief. His playing is very difficult to duplicate if you ever try to play along to one of their live renditions.

Jeff Beck. I wasn't familiar with him but I saw this dude shredding at a local bar. Afterwards he recommended I check out Jeff Beck. I started with his album "Wired" and enjoy his playing.  Also... George Benson. And as an alt-indie music fan I've studied guitar playing of Elliot Smith and learned a bit of Kurt Cobain guitar stuff, both pretty good. Hendrix of course. If you want to learn Hendrix check out this guy "Greg" on YouTube, he plays it perfectly. I'm a guitarist myself :-)

Yeah, someone commented on YouTube about his "ringing harmonics" as beautiful, especially when playing stacks of amps super loud. Can't disagree.

That vid of SRV ^ is rad.  How can he pull all those strings around like that?  I'm to understand that his strings were so thick that they were a kind thats hard to find. He was bending those heavey strings strung out on dope!  Eddie van halen couldn't play after a couple of drinks and Page couldn't play at all once he started using heroin.  I saw the oh sees guy ^up there he's rad.  Someone mentioned John Bonamassa, who I haven't listened to but I heard he "plays blues for dentists", my cousin is a gmo engineer and he's obsessed with him.  The band dystopia is sick if you like guitar.  (the vocals are what they are tho with dystopia, I still love them)  My fave now for rock is Syd Barret.  I heard recently that Jimi was really into him, feeling that he was a peer in experimental guitar.

I'm trying to think of favorites of mine that haven't been mentioned yet, but you gotta go with Hendrix.  So Hendrix and...

Stephen Malkmus-love his solos on his solo stuff, Pig Latin and Face the Truth

Jim O'Rourke-everything he does, but especially Loose Fur

Steve Cropper-Stax records session guy that played on ALL of the Stax hits, along with Booker T, Duck Dunn, etc.

Wayne Krantz-Okay-Angular jazz stuff

Nels Cline-I don't care if Wilco has sucked for awhile, everything he touches is great and I especially like/miss the Nels Cline Singers

Spanky Alford-Loved his live work in the early D'Angelo days and he's a rhythm and taste machine
