Does anyone know if a Jaya Bonderov Nike pro model ever existed? I'm trying to find some Nike shoes from around 1998 and can't find any of them. Pat Channita and Bam Margera used to skate them a lot.
-
tried to find them too but nothing came up.
-
I only ever saw people skating in these (not sure if they were still around during TM Remy Stratton's early team:

This is what a typical Nike skate shoe looked like in 1998:

There was never a Pro shoe. They made three models but the only one I remember seeing worn by Jaya and Bam was the Air Choad (yes, that was the actual name):

This was around 96 or 98 and accompanied by the whole "What If All Athletes Were Treated Like Skateboarders?" campaign.
For reference, the other models are on the top here:

This is a really disturbing page.
I remember a crappy photo of a supposed Nike skate shoe in an old Sidewalk. I think it's the 96 Euro contest series issue (the boycott year).
-
oh man I actually had those Nike Choad's... I remember it had a crazy wide/round toe box (i have wide feet which is why I decided to get them), and they were so wide it completely fucked up my ability to even do a basic ollie. I think I skated them for two days, ditched them and felt like an ass for even buying a shoe called the Choad in the first place.
-
how long until Chris Milic and Jesse Alba start rocking those Airwalks and make them the biggest trend?
-
Airwalk Ones were the shit back then in my town. Horrible for skating.
-
Those adidas gaton's would look good with a modern redesign.

Had those Nike Sergei Fedorov ice skates when I was a kid lol
-
goddamn, that shoe page is full of the ugliest shit. i actually had the airwalk voids, one of my first skate shoes.
i also remember that what if... campaign, even my 12 year old self thought this was corny as fuck. coming to the school yard in anything but dcs or axions was a no go either way back then, if you wore nikes you were certified normal people trash. then es was cool and then a little later when muska bounced from es and thomas from adio to c1rca that was the hottest shit... i actually haven't seen a single vans shoe back then, they were laughed off as cheap punker shoes, and older punk skaters were the only ones wearing them, but we all wanted to be all mnc/all city/zoo york
-
That nike athletes campagne was actually really good, nike or not.
One of my friends actually got shoes from nike back then, a looooooot of those were choads.
I thought they were horrible and so did he.
I skated the adidas gatons quite much. And the airwalk ones of course.
-
Wow, those were some ugly shoes!

Those are sick imo. Almost like a zoom tre without the rubber cap.

The adimatic is incredible, one guy that was working in our design team has a pair. He was kinda fascinated about that shoe and he rocked them on some special events.
You guys should see some of the adidas skate stuff you find on old catalogs from the archives. Its fascinating. Just so you understand what I'm talking about: https://www.instagram.com/p/BBYd3fuG40w/ (https://www.instagram.com/p/BBYd3fuG40w/)

I liked that old Nike campaign, but never had any of those shoes and didn't even want them back then. I remember thinking the adidas looked so bad. That being said, I'd probably skate the Lien, Schimp and Gaton nowadays.
-
More than a decade ago a shop in my hometown cleared some dead stock and i skated like 6 of those Airwalk ones, they were 3 for 25$ when a regular skate shoe here costs 60$+. that shop also had a huge stock of Keds and USA made vans that at the time we didnt think were attractive at all, could have made a killing on Ebay if we werent poor kids

I don't remember the Adidas Gaton, but I had the Adidas Norton which I guess just had a different toe. Probably 94 or 95.

I was gonna bring up the Norton. They were available really cheap at some sprots store in my town and hella dudes skated them in the mid 90s.
I feel weirded out by how much I wanna try and skate a pair of Airwalk Ones. I'm totally not even one of those dudes... I hope.

Nike had some traveling demo event around 97 or 98 where they'd show up with a small street course setup. they had a shoe rack where you could try out their shoes while you skated and they gave everyone these ACG dri fit tshirts to skate in. There was a vert ramp with some c-rate vert pros too and some horrible alterna-teen and ska-bands. it was weird, but it was a new spot for the weekend so everyone skated it. one of the pairs wasn't so bad (the one Bam used to always wear).
-
Firstly Jaya was sick as fuck.
Secondly that is a couple of pages of real crappy shoes. I remember everyone had branched out of buying full priced "skate shoes" and were raiding the discount racks for campus, gazelles, shell-toes, clydes, Barclays (if you could find them), Dr J's.
Then the companies reacted, "if the skaters are buying these why not make them" and proceeded to fully fuck them up and charge full price, then they would blow out and fall apart.
-back in my day, rant rant rant rant, etc...
-
I never liked anything about that mid-late '90s Nike campaign. Who wants to see a concrete piling in an end zone when eS featured two page spreads of your favorite skaters? I couldn't tell if those Diakka watch ads parodied the influx of corporate advertising or just a sign of things to come.

Hard - Core"""' skateboard shoe , ideal for longboards......... haha Awesome.

yeah there wasn’t really any part of the city I wouldn’t of skated at least once twice a week from say 95-99.. I lived one bus stop over the bridge..
funny though I’ve been home an hour from skating Hyde park and Martin place TODAY first time since like 2000.. was pretty fun
So today There were some blokes filming up the top of Hyde park Oxford st end the dude skating was pretty
Good.. too tired to try to explain but it looked like he was trying to get two tricks and they were both sick.. as was I was walking past two decent looking girls I’d say early 20’s walked past
And made a comment about the dude skating “omg he is so awesome”... I’ve overheard this was like
Shit man these dudes should really know that these cute age appropriate girls were into them.
Skateboard in arm I walked past the skaters and said Something “g’day fellas..those two chicks just walking over there said they think he is awesome.. (looking like a weirdo..but hey I was trying to help)
They all just kinda did a weird cheer .. and I carried on my way.. awkward skateboarding moments
