I've been listening to Bill Evans nonstop at work. His album Interplay is a new favourite.
My taste in jazz is pretty entry level and uninformed, but I love it.

Don't worry about any jazz snobs , they are the worst . Jazz is (if not one of) the most American art forms , it's for everyone to share and enjoy !

Evans usually played in a trio format so it's sweet to hear him as bandleader of a quintet , and Interplay definitely has an all star lineup . If you haven't already , check out his albums Waltz for Debby and Portrait in Jazz (his OG trio) from Riverside Recordings .

I really like chet baker. (His trumpet playing not his singing). His trumpet somehow sounds much softer than most other famous players.

Chet Baker - Groovy (Not Now Music) [Full Album] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmKOBxs_Cbo#)

I studied classic trumpet playing for awhile during high school. I have recently picked it up again trying to teach myself some jazz with notes from the library and some help from youtube.

So fare I have enjoyed practicing classic bossa nova (mostly jobim), duke ellington (solitude, satin doll), chet baker/Gershwin (summertime), ain't misbehavin' (fats waller). There are some good tutorials on youtube with transcriptions of the music. I've also tried to improvise abit, but since I play alone that hasn't really been that amazing.

Does anyone else play jazz? What are some of your favorite tunes to play?

dope !

I grew up playing classical as well (piano) for years , then a bit of trumpet in jHS/HS . Recently took the white sheet off my piano and moved/tuned it - been learning jazz ever since . Finishing up this comp word lit degree (which I will turn into a paper airplane) while debating about going back to uni for jazz piano performance (if I can get my sight reading up to speed) within a year or two . have tons of friends who gig actively in the scene but , they've either been playing jazz forever or are currently enrolled in a program . None of the legends really went to school - it wasn't taken seriously or readily available until recently , but I think in my situation having private lessons and a group of dedicated musicians constantly around you is an environment that would facilitate what I want to do in my future .

Right now , I'm using an assortment of texts (physical/online) to sharpen my skills . Definitely grab a real book , I researched a couple different lists of tunes from reputable sources and compiled a list of the tunes that repeatedly pop up (along with going to friends' shows in and out of uni) to figure out my bag of tunes for jazz . Right now focusing on blues/ballads/bossas and slowly checking out rhythm changes and bebop . Jazz is a lifetime deal , work on your directed studies everyday - private teacher/applied music program/solo , it don't matter . Buddhism says it takes 10,000 hours to become a master of any skill/art , clock in some time !

I love jazz...when it's good. I'm still hoping Seb Carayol can find the full soundtrack from A Visual Sound someday.

Among many others, I think BADBADNOTGOOD is excellent:

BADBADNOTGOOD - Cashmere (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK1P_QWzK9w#)

I'm also a huge fan of Vince Guaraldi:

Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete - Y Sus Amigos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrmwEJTWrPo&list=PLhP5yL_4kVnzMKZjZHaMtTAh_M4ZTHH7p&index=4#)

If anyone has some recommendations for fast jazz please mention them.

I definitely like jazz, although I tend to go towards the more free jazz/experimental side.  some of my favorites:

John Coltrane - Ascension (1965) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgJdj8G1IF4#)

Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity (full abum) (HD 1080p) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWsIG5sNq1Q#)

hands down my favorite free jazz/noise album-
The Peter Brotzmann Octet - Machine Gun (Full Album) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wgA9L5TN5M#)

i like the album these guys did but this is cool live footage:
Paul Flaherty/Chris Corsano - January 23, 2015 (Pt. 2 of 4) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si5n4qCqNdY#)

Antennas Erupt (last song, last show).mp4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErgmRRhV_io#)

Good shout, I have this one playing in the shop at the moment.
I love Stan Getz, and I'm enjoying this but I suspect I wouldn't have listened to this one of my own accord, I've had a bit of a stigma towards Jazz Legends newer albums after I tried to listen to a few of Miles Davis's later albums.

I used to listen to a lot of jazz, mostly bebop and hardbop, but sort of lost interest a long time ago. From contemporary artist, I still listen to the Tied & Tickled Trio regularly.

Yeah, it is alot of work. I have started taking private lessons recently and the teacher has me working on the very baiscs for now: breathing and keeping a steady beat. Apperently have been slacking practicing those. It is pretty hard focusing on those basics, when I would really rather just play however I feel. I have been getting more and more obsessed though. I find myself humming tunes while taking a piss in half sleep at nights.

Aw yiss a jazz thread!
I prefer attending and listening live performances. It is just another feeling and my audio equipment is basic.

One of my recent discoveries was this:

Cal Tjader - Latin Kick (1958) Full vinyl LP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX1N0j65H-0#)

I love the cover art and imagining the concept of dudes in middle of desert catching shelter behind cactus to listen to band playing.

That album and album cover are sweet. Good post.

The only other Latin jazz stuff I've ever checked out has been Sketches of Spain, bossa nova stuff like Getz/Gilberto's album, or Astor Piazzolla, but I dig all of it.

No problem dude . My browser translator is a piece of shit or else I'd copy/paste a proper transcription of this lil bio written by Slowboat Jazz Club - his old stomping grounds . http://www.jazz-slowboat.jp/ryo-Fukui/ (http://www.jazz-slowboat.jp/ryo-Fukui/)

Story goes Ryo caught wind of jazz during its decline in the 70s and was so hyped by what he heard that he shut himself away from the world for 5/6 years , returning from his shed to drop Scenery + Mellow Dreams . Apparently he just disappeared after dropping those albums . Inspiration for days

p.s. That plantasia stuff is dope

This is absolutely ridiculous, hahaha. The fucking size of his drum kit, and the amount of keyboards... I can dig it though. What's he using for a plectrum? It's weird to see them all wailing away on their instruments and then hear a relatively mellow recording. I don't like the bits when he's more or less doing scale exercises, but I like the main melody and a lot of his guitar solo. I still really want to get more into jazz guitar but I don't know how or where to start.

Learn to read chord charts if you cant, you can get big books of jazz standards with charts for the changes/harmony and the melody is in notation, you can play a lot just jamming with the standards and riffing a bit, but more expansive improvisation requires a lot of theoretical knowledge, or you can just wing it, but with a base grounded in understanding it's easier to build off than just kind of rambling through it, obviously with a wide degree of variance for both

edit: unless you can already do all those things, I guess just learn more about jazz harmony

-Learn your chords in all 12 keys going through the cycle of 4ths & practice the chords in 3 groups (C/F/Bb/Eb) (Ab/Db/Gb/B) (E/A/D/G) .
-Get the free metronome app , set to 4/4@60bpm and get the first chunk down (hold chord for whole note - 4 beats) , then work on the second & third groups until you have all three locked down in a row+on time (once you get them locked @ 60 hold the chords for less beats - 3, 2 or 1 beat) .

Chords
Maj 6th 1-3-5-6 (C-E-G-A)
Min 6th 1-b3-5-6 (C-Eb-G-A)
Maj 7th 1-3-5-7 (C-E-G-B)
MinMaj 7th 1-b3-5-7 (C-Eb-G-B)
Dom 7th 1-3-5-b7 (C-E-G-Bb)
Min 7th 1-b3-5-b7 (C-Eb-G-Bb)
HalfDim 7th 1-b3-b5-b7 (C-Eb-Gb-Bb)
Dim 7th 1-b3-b5-bb7 (C-Eb-Gb-A)
Aug 7th 1-3-#5-b7 (C-E-G#-Bb)

*C major scale (C D E F G A B=1 2 3 4 5 6 7)
*b=flat (half step down) #=sharp (half step up)

12 keys & 9 types = 108 chords (root position) . Eventually you want to do the same with every chords inversion [C6 first inversion (E-G-A-C)] in order to keep the changes sounding smooth , freeing up your fingers (no big leaps to the next chord) and ultimately enabling you to create you own chord voicings . When I practice this on piano I alternate between going up and down octaves to keep my hands from having to run up and down the keys and to stay outta the muddier octaves - assuming it's the same deal for the neck of a guitar .

Basically , getting all these chords down will allow you to easily* play progressions on some basic tunes after learning the chord symbols scribbled on charts . Check out Autumn Leaves or Tenor Madness , two cornerstone beginner jazz standards . After you get the chords down start picking out the melodies (with metronome&counting beats out loud) , then practice the chords/melody using different backing tracks on YouTube if you don't have access to someone who can comp the chords behind you .

*ease depends on how diligently you practice - the process of learning jazz is EXACTLY like learning skateboarding !

EDIT : To defeat boredom make up your own progressions after you find some chords you dig , try playing a ii-V-I in C (dmin7-Gdom7-Cmaj7)

erroll garner didn't know how to read music - his older siblings did , but he chose to play by ear . it's not fair . .

I always wonder if Headhunters classify as jazz record - it's verrry funky.

Jazz is an umbrella term . There's Jazz-blues and Blues-jazz , each fusion respectively utilizing more aspects of one genre over the other (jazz+blues is kind of a bad example since they're on some yin/yang type ish , so it all depends on who you're asking) . When I hear someone say they like jazz it's kinda like they just said they like sports . What kind of sports ?

Herbie's definitely one of the legends . He's clocked in thousands of hours of focused practice to master the "rules" , so he's allowed to break 'em (you can tell when someone's just regurgitating licks and doesn't have everything locked , similar to watching some street league dudes who can't ride tranny do awkward kickturns on the qp) . Herbie was a key part of many historically significant recordings/shows , and in his later years as a bandleader , started directing his energy and creative forces to push music into different directions (Headhunters/Rockit etc) . Headhunters has a hypnotic mix of funk/rock/soul but definitely still relies on some sweet jazz harmony/improvisation (listen to herbie's keyboard solos on chameleon) that every well-rounded musician has in the utility belt .

p.s. Digging into the etymology of the word "jazz" , you find that a lot of folks (researchers/historians) claim the term was coined by white folk (USA) and their blatant disregard for any musical achievements made by african-americans . The whites likened black music to masturbatory outbursts (jism/jizz) - hence the term jazz . I have a friend who just graduated from UCLA's department of ethnomusicology as a performance major , and refuses to call this music jazz . Instead he uses "BAM" (black american music) , and is convinced that anyone using the word jazz is a kook . . . I figure if Miles , Trane and all the legends present and active during it's heyday used the word "jazz" , it's a green light for the rest of us who grew up around their music .

p.p.s. this 1 pretty funky too

Back to Herbie Hancock, although this'll be relevant to Euro pals... he'll be playing live at Pori Jazz festival in Finland, July 14.

So I'm trying to figure out a way how to get there. Tickets are still available.

Pulled trigger to Pori Jazz friday night concert... looking forward to Herbie Hancock and Jamiroquai night.

Herbie is playing before Jamiroquai, kinda should be other way around, considering legend status I would give curtains act to Herbie.

Been missing playing saxophone recently (especially bari) and have been listening to a lot of jazz again as a result. Charles Mingus is my absolute fav, but here's some stuff I've gone back to a lot over the years:

The Penguin Guide to Jazz is a super rad/intimidating book to check out for an insane amount of jazz album recommendations and I don't think there's anything on the net that really compares to it, even if it is a bit dated now. Also never knew about the origins of the term jazz from the poster earlier in the thread. Pretty cool how the talent of the huge jazz figures pretty much entirely erased any derogatory/insulting stigma from it.
