Title: Front Board Appreciation
Post by: MintySandwhich on December 02, 2016, 01:26:34 PM
In light of the new Van's Video ""No Other Way" (Chima's part specifically), I've realized how awesome and difficult front boards are. My question would be: What is the gnarliest front board done? What's your favorite? Or who has the best at frontside boardslides. Sorry if this is a thread already, tried searching but couldn't find anything.

My Vote goes to Chima:

(a few good ones from 6:47 on..)

I love front boards. One of the most stylish "basic" rail/ledge tricks.
Gonz has a great one (of course)

I used to have a big high quality photo of Gonz doing the f/s board on the little rail he does in a line in Video Days. He's wearing a striped shirt, but I can't find it now for the life of me. If someone has it I'd love to see it again.

Arto too, the one he does through the kinked rail (the one Rowley lipslid in sorry) in Mind Field is perfect. He's got a mean one.

Jake Rupp has a great one, underappreciated too.

Also Bastien's last trick in sorry but it's a kick flip fs board. Probably the best one though.

Also always loved this one :

I've seen that picture before and I remember thinking what is happening here? Did he come out of the wall? Or is that area to the right the runway? If so, why is the lighting so different? I still don't get that picture.

Yeah, the area to the right is the runway. You can tell there's no wall there because the black poles underneath "BARBE BEAUTY SALON" are reflecting the light under Jake.

He's more known for other tricks but geoffs front board is still engraved in my head when sorry came out.
the camera angle, the sideway approach, roll away, the white contrast, sketchy spot, so good.
That other one near the end where he powerslides is also fucked.
I zen those fs boards everytime i do them. Shit i broke my arm bailing one last year haha

Favourite trick.

Anyone here learn front boards before bs boardslides? I remember getting close to front boards as a kid on the flatbar when some older guys said 'hey, can you even bs boardslide? You should try learn them first'. I told them I couldn't even get near them and then went for one and ate shit. Afterwards they were like 'yeah wow, stick to the frontside ones' haha.

I still don't feel all that confident on a back board compared to a front board.

Not the first front boards that come to mind, but here's some Ethan Fowler:

Hell yes! If I could only do one trick for the rest of my life other than an ollie, it'd easily be a frontside boardslide.

Anywho, first that pooped into my mind was Kenny Reed's from 7 year glitch.

Also, front boards on the middle of a kink to pop over the end have always been on of my favorite looking tricks and this one @3:33, even though it's switch is on of the best.

Does anyone else have LESS appreciation for a front board to fakie than a front board back to normal stance? I always thought it was kind of like cheating to continue the rotation, like you didn't actually have full control of the trick/posture. On a big rail, take what you can get, for sure, but anything else, bring it back to normal stance.

To an extent, yes. I do understand what you're saying but I also think it's just as hard. A front board to fakie is gnar in its own right because you're sliding completely blind, backwards lol.

I would rather try front board to regular on el toro then front board to fakie haha

This is so similar to me, I feel so sketchy doing bs boardslides still to this day, but fs boards have always been my go to rail trick, all my friends are always surprised when I go straight to fs board slide on a rail rather then backside, only issue I've ever had with the trick is sticking on a rail and flying back onto my head (one of the first times trying a down rail).

I also learned f/s boards before b/s. It's always a favourite trick of mine, I can barely slide them now though. It's the only trick I've ever done down a handrail, and that was sketchy as fuck.

There's a photo of Ronnie Creager f/s boardsliding a flat rail, and the photo was taken inside a restaurant - you can see him through the window, and all the patrons are looking at him. It's such an awesome pic, but I can't find it anywhere. It was from his TWS spotlight back in the early 00's, Seu Trinh took it. If I find the mag I'll scan it.

I like both equally. Look and feel good. And I think coming out to fakie is harder.

I have no idea where that footage was but Pontus did a pretty cool one to fakie on a bench at the Barca train station in an old vid, about ten years ago.
