Title: Fully Flared will be 10 years old this year
Post by: h00man on January 05, 2017, 09:41:57 AM
This brings up a lot of thoughts for me. FF came out when I was in high school and brought me back into the skateboarding world (I started in like 4th grade then stopped cause I was a little fuck bitch).

This makes me:

Feel old. Its been 10 years and it feels like it came out a few years ago. Still a classic.
Lose faith in Crail. Crail released FF and Pretty Sweet in the past 10 years...two videos...
Wonder how long Lakai has left. I really hope they stay alive.
Excited for the new Lakai vid. No special effects and all that bullshit. Just skating. Cmon Italian One don't let us down!

I was just done with college when this came out. First bought it at HUF when they had a retail store in SF. Watched it in store with like a pack of people and bought my copy after. I don't care what people say now but back then, this video was tits.

I was at a burger spot and "Goodbye Horses" came on while I was eating. A couple of college-age skaters came and sat down at the table next to me. I turned to them and asked, "you guys know who skated to this?" and got blank stares. I asked if they had seen FF and they said yes but I could see the lie in their eyes. I was weirded out at first until I realized if they're in college it came out when they were like 9.

I was actually thinking about this the other day and popped it in to watch. I didn't sit through the whole thing, but I skipped around. I remember sitting and watching the countdown in school so excited. The video, despite it's length, still holds up well. MC skating to Judas Priest is so good, and Pops putting out his 2016 part in 2007 is cool.
Was this video the last to contain a full Rickk part?

i feel old because ff is too recent to have really resonated with me. yeah right was probably the last video that did so. not saying flared and numerous others weren't absolutely fantastic, they were. but maybe i was just too old for their impressions to stick around. or maybe i'm the only geezer that feels this way.

just watched the whole thing because of the ten year anniversary. soo many good things in it. my favorite thing is probably the french

that they used the sony vx1k with mk1 for a lot of fisheye shots? was that because of some kind of ty evans sponsorship by panasonic?

yea most likely, ty evans vimeo page has a bunch of panasonic ads they filmed during that time. They were also using the dvx for a bunch of the SD shots too.

The slo mo bugged me at the time but I was so hyped on a new Carroll part and all the heartwarming drama around Guy's part that I didn't care as much. But that aspect of it REALLY has not aged well for me.

Still, it's fucking Fully Flared. It was kind of the pinnacle of a particular era, and I can't deny the nostalgia I get watching it.

Gave my copy away to some younger kids in 2009 and haven't seen it since. I'm on the hasn't aged well / didn't live up to the hype train as well.

Those decks sold out fast, The Pappalardo one feels like it doesn't even exist. Those wheels were on eBay last spring for $25, I think they were like 52s. Also MJ posted on instagram a few years ago that he found a set of them in the pocket of his car door. Those are some scene kid shoes though, I can't imagine anyone on the team rocking those.

Fully Flared was the first skate video I bought with my own money and my first real video I ever saw. It blew twelve year-old me's mind!

I've watched the video so many times as a kid that the songs and tricks are burned into my brain.

I watched it a few weeks ago all the way through for the first time in years and it holds up really well in my opinion. Crazy fucking tricks, a good soundtrack, and MJ's magnum opus. Alex Olson and Pops' parts are my favorite now, but at the time I remember really liking Mike Mo and Koston.

I still can't believe they went through with Mike Mo's switch flip in the opening scene. He could have died.

Biebel's part is a classic. The gear and the song are so dope haha.

I'm most grateful to the video for introducing me to Crailtap in general. I ended up watching Yeah Right on YouTube shortly after seeing it.

If you haven't seen it already, watch The Final Flare. Gives a lot of insight into the making of the video and some cool behind the scenes stuff. It's floating around on YouTube.

This thread reminds me that I'm old. At the time when this came out, I was starting to have more time for skating and had gone to most crail premiers (except gold fish and Yeah Right) but I wasn't sure if I would get hooked up with a ticket. I did and therefore felt this video to be extra special. The house went fucking crazy for Mike Mo, Guy, and the French connection part. Watching Pop's part felt weird because like manny I had photosynthesis in mind. Anyhow, I think this was Guy's last good part and although it's Slap blasphemy, I don't think Pop's part was as forward thinking as many think (before you hate, just know that I had seen similar skating in videos like subzero where East coasters did their thing).  At the end of the premiere I drove by Mike Carrol and I told him I thought the video was epic. He smirked and said, "yeah, we'll do better next time." I never thought he wouldn't keep his word. I was so fucking hyped I bought a Mariano Fully Fared board the following week and that shit broke in 2 days. Haha.

Beetwen Mosaic and Inhabitants was the change of team indeed. He only had a minute on eSpecial  and Inhabitants is just three minutes long. Maybe theres a bunch of footage with Lakais on his feet that never came out, a couple of minutes at least. And maybe some more never seen before footage with eS shoes over his Habitat board.

Remember TReS AMIGOS, that promo was great. Origin part was two minutes long and finally Search the Horizon but three tricks or something like that.

Quality skating and I love AO, Lucas, Rick and Kostons parts.

Overall the video was too caught up in its own melodrama to enjoy as a whole. It also leaves a weird legacy: Ty continued his FF bullshit and ruined pretty sweet, Pops became a crackhead, AO had the better future than Mikemo. Jake Johnsons Mindfield part wouldnt be so tight if it didnt shit on every trend started by FF...but whatevs.

Well good point...but like dude said above, Jale Johnson's mindfield part dropped and sorta shitted on a lot of trends created by that video- I think both in terms of the actual skating in FF as well as the production/editing. That's purely subject obviously, but the direction of skateboarding in general definetly changed course- and here we are today. Which is fucking rad. Do you think FF is worth revisiting?

Also remember being bummed on Pops' part... there were a handful of good tricks though.. almost remember feeling like a lot of photos leading up to it were more exciting than the footage itself. Wouldn't ever compare anything from this video to Subzero but his Mosaic part was one of the greatest from that era, so it was a bummer how underwhelming his Lakai part turned out

I remember being crazy hyped on this video and thought it was sick. I was like 16 and just starting to appreciate ledge stuff more. I started following skating heavily around 2004, when the Lakai hype train really started to take off, so to follow the premiere and the eventual release felt pretty crazy to me, almost like a culmination of my skating experience up to that point. I look back at the time Fully Flared came out with some serious nostalgia, as being sixteen years old and starting to get the hang of skateboarding and seeing five or so amazing videos drop in a single month was pretty rad. I'll watch the video all the way through maybe once a year, and some of the music and editing is questionable, but beyond that, I'd say it's aged pretty well. Alex Olson's part is still top-notch, Nick Jensen's part is easily his most overlooked, Carroll, Koston, and Howard all went out with a bang, and Guy hadn't gone totally overboard just yet. Most importantly, every time I watch it I get to relive the excitement from my initial viewings and I inevitably end up binge watching Inhabitants, Static III, Nothing But The Truth, and Feed the Need shortly afterwards. What a rad time for skateboarding.

^ yes ATM! 2007 was the 1996 of our generation. i remember posting download links on myspace for it right before it came out on dvd, thanks to somebody on here. i still think the best skating to come out of that year was clark hassler in NTBT

Lucas and JB skating to Mannie Fresh is still one of the dopest things ever documented, "I'm rich bitch, I'm a fuckin' Big Tymer!"

"Is that a fish tank bruh in the middle the dash?"
Yeah pimpin' don't put your fingers on my glass!"

Also Carroll's part was too good for words

I remember finding a good rip on limewire and watching it on my ipod all the time, It would keep me busy during my 4 hour friday detentions, I was 17

I just watched a few parts and now I'm feeling total nostalgia, what an epic video.

If you haven't seen it already, watch The Final Flare. Gives a lot of insight into the making of the video and some cool behind the scenes stuff. It's floating around on YouTube.

So sick, thanks for the heads up, think I will watch it again.

Those last few months of 2007 were heavy!

Photosynthesis was my first video and it trips me out to think that the time between Fully Flared and today is longer than the time between those two videos. And even more than the time between Virtual Reality and Photosynthesis.

Haha hell yeah that was so good.

Haven't seen FF in a while but man I used to watch it (And NBTT as well) so much back in the day. I fired up my old first gen Zune a couple of days ago and saw I still had them both on there, that gave me a little kick. Might have to watch them again soon.

I was a freshman in high school when FF came out... Wow.
I remember only hearing about it right before its release because I didn't really follow skateboarding that closely at that age. I had seen maybe one or two other videos at the time, but I remember seeing an ad for it in a Transworld or Thrasher at that time. I immediately added it to my Christmas list.
Watching it definitely influenced my formative years in terms of how I looked at skateboarding. I remember MikeMo and MJ having the most influence on me at that age, but I relate more to Pop's part now than ever.
Given it was such a landmark video in my adolescence, it still holds a special place in my heart. That being said, I absolutely cannot go back and watch the whole thing in one sitting. It's way too much to take in for a skate video. Pretty much overkill, but that's not to say that I don't go back and watch MJ, Carroll, AO, or Guy's parts.

Also, that Koston FF deck was the board I learned kickflips (along with pretty much everything else) on. I kinda miss those days.

Lucas' tre flip blew me away, FF was my introduction to his skating which seems funny now.

Can't believe it's been that long. I started skating around 2007 so when it first came out i saw it on Vimeo and didnt understand anything, so the impression it made on me was minimal, just the intro and the discussion whether it was real or CGI. A few years later though i was absolutely obsessed with it. i had a download on my PSP and remember watching it 2/3 times a day for some weeks one summer in 2010. My friend and i used to quote the contents of parts to eachother (what tricks, where, which clothing etc.)

Definitely one of the greatest and ushering a new era of skateboarding.

Lakai used to have every part in a playlist on their youtube channel, until one day they deleted it. That's when i took the liberty of uploading it to youtube myself and i'm lucky i didn't get in trouble for it.

Jesus Fernandez had one of the best parts for sure. The credits were great too.

I might just be stoned but that shit was like the catalyst for this over produced bland shit. Sick video though, a few classic parts, but shit, Im glad that wasnt the first skate video I seen. I dont want to be a cali dude with a medium white t and lakais, I want to be a peice of shit outcast... atleast that what the older videos taught me. Post by: Baron Samedi on January 09, 2017, 03:15:50 PM
Yeah it's funny, AO's part was ahead of its time in the sense that it predated the super minimalist power skater movement of a few years later (think guys like Westgate or Nick Boserio) where all anybody was doing for a few years was going really really fast and doing ollies up and over stuff. But that whole style had its popularity post-Stay Gold and lasted a few years, and it's fallen back out of vogue again in favor of whatever the fuck you call what the kids are doing these days with their body varials and their golfer hooligan outfits. So if you watch AO's part now it doesn't seem to have held up so much as if you watched it a couple of years ago (not that going fast and ollieing over things will ever exactly be out of style).

I think Mike Mo's part holds up pretty well, minus the Arcade Fire. It's just really good skating without too many goofy gimmicks like all the ledge combos the other guys were doing at the time.

I said the same thing about pops part....it's more relatable now than any of his previous parts.....

It's just the ebb and flow of skateboarding....arcade fire is bad?  Pet shop boys and Yazoo is good?  Guys Ollie up shit , push, and then lip slide off now and no one says shit........can't really complain about Mike Mo.....

Actually went to the premiere of this video at UCLA, it was pretty trippy it was like going to a big Hollywood blockbuster movie premiere and seeing every big time actor in the world in the theater at the same time.

I liked a lot of things about this video but I remember being especially hyped when Judas Priest kicked in to start Mike Carroll's part, also the intro because one of my homies who worked at Girl in the warehouse at the time was there when they filmed all that crazy pyrotechnic stuff and you can see him in there a little bit, also I saw him smoking a fat joint outside the theater after the video with Lucas, JB and the other French dude JJ Rousseau.

Crazy people watching in the lobby before and after, it was like the entire world of shredders was in one room.
Also after party was at some hot nuts Hollywood joint called Cinespace, I think it's closed nowadays but it was surreal in there with pretty much the entire cast of the video getting wasted all at once.

Doesn't feel like 10 years ago but then again when you're as old as me, 10 years ago feels like it was a few months ago sometimes.

I remember thinking I was getting old when Fully Flared came out too (I'm 39 currently)
Can't believe it's already been 10 years but when I do the math, it checks out.

We had that video so damned hyped up, there were rumors of Koston nollie heel nose blunting one of the rails at Hollywood High.
Before the premiere Lakai was putting out little clips to get everyone on the hype train.
The sneak peek of Carroll had a sick line in it and everyone was saying "This must be throwaway!! Can you imagine what his real stuff is like?!!!!  :o   " I think Carroll replied back (via the crailtap page) that it was NOT simply throwaway and for everyone to calm the fuck down.

Weeellllll, it'll be ten years since the premiere in November, but the DVD didn't get to most people until mid-December. That's still almost a year!

2007 was a big year for me. Moved out of my mom's house in San Diego to the bay, where I still live. Fully Flared kind of  punctuated my career of intense skate nerdery. I also lost my virginity the same week I got the DVD. Coincidence?

Looking back, Fully Flared seems to me to have a legacy not unlike the Obama administration. After the hard fought battles of the 2000s sk8 culture wars ? between Black-hair-dyed girl-pants-wearing Jamie Thomas-produced rail chompers and Chris Cole and Corey Duffel-be'ers, and the dignified tasteful-tech 90s-venerators (once the unquestioned Slap contingent consensus) ? Fully Flared came along as the dominant skate document of the era, generating a sense that the good guys had won, that lines had beaten out hammer-clip parts, that ledges and manuals had toppled El Toro. A year later, the darkness of the Iraq-invading Bush years received a similar repudiation in the 2008 election, and everything, for a short moment, looked to be so bright. But then we had to grapple with the loosed beasts of combo-tricks and drone bombings and Ty Evans emboldenment and congressional gridlock and a mediocre Mariano. We learned then, that nothing is very good.

I think Fully Flared used a later version of Triple Six Clubhouse that had different sampling, I don't think Three 6 had permission to sample Bitter Sweet Symphony and they had use a different sample which I think sounds better. Bryan Herman skated to the Bitter Sweet sample though.

Cool dude. At one point Bryan Herman and Shane Cross were the same person to me. How awesome if those cats were ever together on some Emerica trip.

Actually rewatching this right now. Maybe it's the overwhelming nostalgia talking, but I think it still holds well. Though if it came out today I think people would be tripping on how long it is.

I remember it being a real hot topic that Alex Olson didn't skate switch in his part minus a nollie backside flip. Despite weird feelings I have of him now his part is still one of my favorites in the video.

I'm afraid if we played a game of SK8, you'd get me with a vicious fakie nollie.

What else is crazy about 2017 is OG Plan B was 1991-1998; Plan B 2.0 has been 2005-2017. It's now been 12 years and still no parts from half the team. Makin' Castillo look like Even Smith.

I remember watching a shitty quality .mp4 download of it and staying up way too late on a school night watching it. I was in 11th grade. Damn, time is a motherfucker.

Everything about it was perfect. Biebel+Jeezy, all the vets putting out legit footage and not half assing it, the new guys killing it, enough fanfare and fireworks without pretty sweet-ing it. I had watched old Guy parts before, but since I started skating in late 99 and didn't really pay attention to skate media until 2001 or so, he had never been someone who was routinely getting coverage during my skate nerd phase up until that point. I was absolutely floored by his part.

Damn this thread brought out Alexactly, dude you were one of my favorite posters on here from the FF era!

I wonder how many people got meatspun through fake download links...

This kid marty got punked into posting a pic of his testicles in exchange for a 'link'...

I was actually scrolling back in time through here once when I was bored at work. I came across all the Fully Flared rumors and release date/push back threads. There were posts about the premiere and some SLAP dudes went to see it. Everyone was freaking out and asking questions about last part/song/tricks etc.

Damn, FF was probably the best video of the decade.

I just flicked around the vid and watched a few parts. Guy's part (second last) starts at 56.00 and the vid ends at 1.29.00. What were they thinking making a skate vid this long?

Whilst FF was extremely popular and in some ways groundbreaking, I remember it more so for its negative aspects.

FF bought about the era of excessive filler clips (hi-5s, hugging etc) and corny overly emotional vibes to skate videos (think MJ, Guy and Mike Mo).

It also led a huge resurgence of ugly ledge combos, I'm specifically thinking of all the smith/lipslide flip out tricks (Carrol gets an obvious pass here as he made his look good).

See the TWS vids that came out in the years following for further clarification.

Pop's fresh to hesh transition part felt insincere and kinda half-hearted.

My bitching aside, I still enjoy watching Koston, Biebel and especially Carrol's parts.

Also was this the last legit Koston part?

Yes, last one he really gave his all to without a doubt.

Lol @ Pops fresh to hesh...dude was never hesh, you're saying that why, because they put bad brains behind his skateboarding?

Lucas Puig's part was genuinely groundbreaking and that's what this video should be remembered for in kind

Otherwise, it was a great last dance for some monumental skaters from a certain generation. I was 17 when this video came out and being well aware that Carroll and Co had parts in Quesionable there was no question that this was it for them. The fact that their parts were so good solidified their legend status even further.

The FF skateboard video format sucked. In hindsight it was sorta the beginning of the end for crailtap.

Aside from all that, there was some serious all that skating in this video. Guy's comeback part, Jesus' come forward part, career curtains for a lot of heavy hitters. There probably won't be anything quite like FF again anytime soon

MJ's part being 3 songs seems like overkill now. A quarter of his part is DIY skatepark footage. I remember rumours that the last spot was fake too (in the Berra sense).

I always wondered this--can't recall seeing anyone else skate it...?

In the Final Flare they mention how it was filmed while they were on tour and they all wanted to go but he knew he wouldn't be able to try it again. It could be b.s., but there you go.

Call it what you will. The Bad Brains track, flannos, tats, pole jams etc certainly has a different vibe to his previous parts.

I have a feeling that thing, if it didn't have that dumb gap-in concrete at the bottom of it that doesn't actually fuck with you but would fuck with my head (and if it was in Detroit), would be one of those spots that only I enjoy skating.

It was the second skate vid I ever saw after Yeah Right (saw it in '09 shortly after I started skating). It's because of this video that I see Mike Carroll and Lucas Puig as gods.

The thing that bothers me most about Pappalardo's part is that after he does the manual kickflip out there's the sound of a coin falling.

And one of he best pieces of editing in that video
