Post by: perverted super otaku! on April 09, 2017, 06:01:38 AM
I know there is already a woodshop thread, but this seems like it could be helpful. I'll try to keep it updated, so feel free to contribute or correct, plus I cant remember any from pennswood or SC... I know scum.co is in there somewhere?

Many people on here have said they are dwindle, they do not etch the decks because it is a "secret". Do you have any other reasons for your claims?

I'm just going with consensus here pretty much, and no has ever said stix, but many people have asid dwindle, don't they say made in china on them also? ps are mexico.

NHS decks are definitely not PS Stix. I've had a Flip and a Creature recently and they did not feel or look like PS Stix and the Flip had a Made in China sticker. Maybe not Dwindle but some other factory in China.

FA not using PS has nothing to do with "when they can't do it." I've
Talked to Paul Schmitt and it's due to price or politics -- or how the FA folks are feeling that day. The wood biz is all politics and pennies--with the manufacturers making their coin on quantity.

Yeah, do some shop boards too but I have heard they are really difficult to deal with so we always keep it in the UK for our boards.

Companies can choose to not get the laser labeling at dsm. The latest PAlace decks I've seen do not have the laser engravement but most of em had the dsm premium woodshop sticker either on the front or side of the deck.

Sorry to bump thread but I'd like some woodshop info on the "mountain" graphic Northern Co did a season back.  The shape I had was an 8.5 popsicle with a 15 inch wheelbase, ti-dye woodstain and red top ply.  I'm pretty sure Pennswood pressed it but would like to see what y'all think.  I emailed the dude from Northern and he said they've switched woodshops and won't be doing that shape anymore.  But he didn't say which woodshop pressed it to begin with.  Anyone know if Pennswood does the same shape for any other brands?  An 8.5 with a 15" wheelbase on domestic wood is like a holy grail for me.

50 decks...I think all the wood shops ask for company name and tax ID. You could start your own company.

Nah NHS owns their own woodshop which they moved to china in the mid 2000's and it's been there ever since.
Interesting, Pals that work in skate shops etc. who I know are authorities on this matter have said all NHS is DSM. How current is your info?/how do you know? Willing to change any listing if better or more complete info comes about

question

if NHS is using DSM, are they using all DSM construction? So like are all NHS boards R7?

Crailtap boards have too much of a durability issue, they kinda feel like PS stix (Light and poppy) but for a week at most.

I was wondering about them actually and didn't know who they were made by, Jamie said in an interview he is having the new boards made by someone else since they left dwindle distribution? was it BBS? I cant remember, but do remember him saying they wont be dwindle

If I remember correctly some of those VHS series boards were pressed by south central though. Maybe the one you have is SC pressed? Who's board was it? I know the Trahan one was SC. This workshop/brand thing is the most confusing shit ever.

When all you know is 'China' then you can't expect much....I think that's often the problem is quality control and consistency is bad..... DSM though I don't believe that to be totally true....

If I have an option I'd buy PS, BBS, or USA...but I don't think the DSM stuff is that bad....truth..id never buy a cliche board namely cause of the graphics....

Zero I think is going made in USA....not sure where....

Could be. I had three 8.25" ones and they all had very different shapes. 14.25" wheelbase on two of them. Other one with a short ass tail and the other one with a huge tail and a nose. The third one had a 14" wheelbase and was just way too short and tiny. I got tired of the gamble with Toy Machine boards and the fact that they sell us different shit than they do over in the US, so I can't trust any of the measurements I google either. Also Toy Machine graphics have gone downhill steep, so I won't buy any in the foreseeable future as there are load of better choices out there.

Anyone know how to check a PS Stix serial number and find out the shape/size?  I ordered a Toy Machine 8.5 Ed Templeton deck from Tactics, and when it arrived it was actually a Leo Romero graphic, but the factory barcode sticker on the outside of the shrinkwrap still had it labeled as a 8.5 x 32.25 Ed T.
I've ridden a bunch of the Toy Machine 8.5 x 32.25s, and this shape was def not one of them.  This one had a super full, square nose, and I really enjoyed skating it.  Would like to reliably find another (local shop rarely ever carries TM unfortunately).

I reckon you can pick 'em just by looking at the concave, and by buying a recently released graphic. If the concave and shape looks proper, like it would the best, truest one out of the batch of 5 (or maybe more). Also learnt not to order them online. I'm convinced they send the shittier ones to big online stores.

yo it would be kinda sick if you could access the serial number databases, you could look up your board's serial #and find out all the details, including shape, making it easier to find the exact shape you want all the time by having search criteria based off the shape and manufacture date to find the newest ones

Good: strong, snappy, durable, USA made.

Bad: limited shapes, but thats really about it.

Does anyone know where the Sour boards are pressed? I want to support them but on the other hand, I'm in love with BBS/Generator decks...
shit.. how did i miss them, I think they are BBS but not 100% sure

they are bbs/generator.
I don't know about the boards you get in america, but they started out at bbs/generator but switched to HLC since they're both based in spain after the first or second delivery.

I've never seen one for sale here afaik, so maybe they have switched to HLC entirely

Tum Yeto - Foundation and TM specifically, are the shapes the same? pointy (like regular reals) or more on the full side? Finally found some short decks with long WBs and want to give them as shot.

FA not using PS has nothing to do with "when they can't do it." I've
Talked to Paul Schmitt and it's due to price or politics -- or how the FA folks are feeling that day. The wood biz is all politics and pennies--with the manufacturers making their coin on quantity.

I think a lot of people don't realize how often board companies switch between wood shops. Also, I don't think people realize just how different two boards from the same wood shop can be, even boards from the same run. That's why I don't buy boards online anymore, because I've made the mistake of buying duplicate boards thinking they'd be the same when you can tell the decks came from opposite ends of the board pile.

As far as brands by woodshop are concerned, Fancy Lad & Supreme get their boards from Chapman.

The major of distributors of which there is like 4(crail, dlx, dwindle and baker boys", all use one woodshop exclusively so the majority of companies never change woodshops, most other major companies only use one shop exclusively... what your saying here isnt really true, I listed the ones that switch between two and it's only AWS, Habitat and FA, Hockey and some Tum Yeto

Dwindle presses one board at a time, so their boards are the most consistently shaped, most press 4-5 at once and that creates 5 different concaves from one press

What I'm saying is true, and once your list becomes more complete & updated you'll see it for yourself.

The bigger the company, the more likely they are to stick with one woodshop. Their orders are usually far too large to switch wood shops at the drop of a hat & require more planning so the shops can facilitate their order quantity. However, the amount of smaller board companies far outnumber the established big brands at this point, and those companies shop around like crazy. And I'm not talking making your pro boards at one woodshop & having your price point decks made at another/ different shops based on geographical location like the ones you've listed, I'm talking having your major full price runs divided between different wood shops for the same region.

Yeah, well dude that info isn't relevant to most people, there might be more small brands than large ones but go into any shop and 80-100% of the boards will be from the big 4 distros(Baker Boys, Crail, Dlx and Dwindle), all of whom use one woodshop exclusively. My idea wasn't include literally every brand from a dude who wanted to turn himself pro by making his own company or whatever, it's a list of widely available boards from legit(my opinion) brands, pretty much everyone on the set-up thread/ SLAP rides a board from the list.

Yeah anyone got ideas? Supposedly this Ben Degros guy on YouTube said they're made by bbs/gen but from my experience they look like they're still whatever crailtap does cause the shape and dimensions are exactly the same as most girl boards I.e. 8x31.625 with 14wb rounded nose and tail and the contour on the kicks aren't deep and sloped like bbs/gen decks

Yeah I'm not talking about some Bullshit brands, I'm talking about board companies Slap actually fucks with. Why would you think I was mentioning hole in the wall shop board program brands? Do you think Northern Co is a bullshit company that was made so Steve Fletch could turn himself pro?

https://www.instagram.com/p/BODpUS-AOdW/?hl=en&taken-by=pennswood (https://www.instagram.com/p/BODpUS-AOdW/?hl=en&taken-by=pennswood)

Like I said, the more your list grows the more you might learn something. But if you're not gonna make a comprehensive list then why make another one to begin with? If you only care about big brands that never change wood shops, we could have just referred to Lance's old posts. It doesn't seem like you're updating the list anyway, and if you're being persnickety about these brands not being "legit" then maybe this wasn't the thread for you to start.

I don't even know what this argument is about but just jumping in to say that brands like Snack, Northern Co, Scumco etc. definitely don't fall under the "dude who wanted to turn himself pro by making his own company or whatever" category and the fact that most boards on a typical skateshop wall come from one of the big distributors is a good argument for trying to support smaller brands.

My sentiment exactly. I get that everyone wants to argue about the board market being over saturated and the bigger companies having to downsize as a result, but I'd rather see the market share spread around to those who are bringing something new to the table. When companies become too big for too long, they end up in a state of complacency and end up like present day Girl...

I went to the Sour HQ/shop last month, they didn't have any board of my size because they were waiting the new drop that was just released this week. They have their own shapes and the new Jart construction is really good. Should be a good deck.

control is the fucking worst wood shop.

Not gonna say control is shitty...but I like pennswood.....yes...control has a more square bevel...and the ones I've seen are pretty mellow

I think you're in the minority on that dwindle wood, you have some good experience with them?
I swear I'm just going to buy a magenta/ passport because I don't have to worry about about whacky colored plies and low quality wood. Currently eyeing up a few Northern Co.s too though

I know it's 'cool' to shit on Dwindle and I'm personally not a fan of any of their brands when it comes to aesthetics but they really do make some of the best boards on the market. How many companies are using resin epoxy glue, doing individual board pressing and offer a 30 day warranty against breakage?  Oh and their quality control is pretty fucking top notch as well. No fucked up misaligned drilled holes or funky ass concave ala PS Stix. Dwindle has even recently jumped on the fullshape/shovel nose trend with some of their new shapes as well.

That's fucked!, the amount of money it takes get a run of decks for a shop or smaller company could probably sink them if they don't see the returns for the investment, basically putting their business into pennswood's hands and having them ghost you would be completely fucked, that is shocking

^^^ @firebert @heritage I have to admit that we are running behind on production, and I am a week or more behind on emails basically because I am spending 12-16 hours a day in the shop trying to catch up. However your posts are making it sound like we took someone?s money and did not come through with the highest quality boards we can make. The following posts seem like they formed an opinion based on your posts that makes us at Pennswood look like we don?t value every customer we work with as friends and business partners. Scumco has a new line of boards coming through the shop now which will be out in a few weeks. They are trying some boards from another wood shop as their price point boards.

You think admitting you're understaffed is coming out swinging? A business should at least pick-up the phone or answer emails for their clients, that's the most basic level of customer service that should be continuous regardless of demand, is this normally how things in skate woodshops work?

Move what overseas? There are a handful of woodshops in North America and only P.S. from my understanding moved to China at one point but it wasn't financially worthwhile so they went to Mexico, as Paul Schmitt stated in a fairly recent interview. DSM was opened in China right off the bat, as with other Chinese woodshops.

Everyone and their mom is making boards now, and there are only so many [good] woodshops to go around you know? This is why smaller board cos. do different woodshop runs, it's about the woodshops availability after they handle groups like DLX/Primitive/BBoys/PlanB (and those are just the bigger groups, well not sure about PlanB tho;) But you get the point.  PSstix has got to be at capacity of late with all the new companies springing up.

Got the Brian Wenning reissue in Europe - Made in EU = Jart.

The following Brands are now pressed Jart in and for Europe:
Sour (EU Market)
Flip Skateboards (EU Market)
Sk8mafia (EU Market)
Habitat Skateboards (EU Market)
SOVRN (EU Market)
https://store.hlcdist.com/skateboard/skateboard-decks.html

Had a Sour 8.1 this spring by Jart, shape sucked and heavy, the Habitat BW looks good from a shape perspective but the wood seems thick compared to Bareback/South Central or it is just the way the edges are sanded.

Had some South Central Poltic Boards this summer and I can admit best wood and shapes but nearly impossible to get SC wood in Europe. Skated one Scumco (Pennswood?) and it felt so much chunckier compared to the South Central Boards.

Anyone know where to get SC Wood in Europe (not UK) please let me know.

They're another flip flopper. You should really just follow wood shops on instagram and add what you see, because you haphazardly add (and refuse to add) to your list accurately. If I made another account and said that my shop just got in a run of PS Stix Palace boards, you'd probably run to add it to your list without question.

Not particularly, seeing as my previous suggestions weren't added to the list after providing proof of my claims; there's no incentive to keep giving him fish to eat, so instead I chose to teach him how to fish for himself.

I don't know who they are under now but the Flintstones board I bought almost a year ago was from Surplus Distribution. They are no longer on Surplus' site though and the LE site itself has dwindled down to 2 pages. The home page has no info, just 3 catalog items and the only other page is the catalog with a few more items.

whos doing LE now? were under blitz then moved to elements "the branch" or whatever so are they on ps same as element and plan b?

I don't know who they are under now but the Flintstones board I bought almost a year ago was from Surplus Distribution. They are no longer on Surplus' site though and the LE site itself has dwindled down to 2 pages. The home page has no info, just 3 catalog items and the only other page is the catalog with a few more items.

deck came and had a mexico label on it, stix?

I think that BBS makes all the boards and does most of the graphics, and generator does the graphics for smaller runs. I remember when some Generator boards(Magenta) had Made in USA on them, even though i'm pretty sure sure the actual deck was made in Mexico, so I also think Generator was a way to put USA on Mexican boards before the cat was out of the bag.

Yup. The only Numbers deck I saw was PS. Alien also used both, though the last 2 I saw were PS.

If 5Boro switched to DSM that's news to me - used to be that other China mfg that brands use once they can't afford the wood they actually want. Never knew the name of that mfg.

What's the woodshop that made 1031? They did Send Help for a while too... the boards are gross. Shrink wrap is very brittle and breaks/rips easy... usually red or blue dyes. Made in USA.

BBS is the best, SC gets my vote for second.

Beer City pressed the decks for 1031. I've never seen a Send Help in person but I know they are USA made and assumed it was Beer City also. Kinda sucks. If they where BBS wood I would try them out.

They stopped using Chapman at least 3 years ago now. I had one of the original VHS series in 2014 and they had already switched to China wood at that point.

Program just told me they now use Clutch. Used to be PS Stix prior to their departure from being distributed by Welcome. I've never heard of Clutch before, anyone have any experience with decks made there?

I use Clutch now. Good boards, really snappy.
Made in Mexico, good variety of shapes, the guys that run it all skate and itís reflected in the product. Plus they have cool things like split veneers. Theyíre solid overall but itís their shapes I like the most. They have a 8.5 thatís a hair under 8.6 which I personally really like.

I’ve had 5 numbers boards since February and they have all been ps stix. I asked my local shop who I got it from and they said the first drop some were bbs but since the second they have all been ps stix. They aren’t lasered on the top bolts like most ps boards I’m wondering if maybe someone confused that for bbs?

I think PS uses a lighter finishing substance, and the shapes are usually steeper/weirder and the grain wears differently, so i guess not that easily... but you could tell comparing maybe, oh also the warning stickers might help

I'll just leave Numbers as PS and can adjust if anyone ends up with a new bbs from them

They have a laser engraving of the girl doing math with her hands bbs boards donít have laser engraving if thereís ever an engraving ďbuilt by bbsĒ itís stamped into the wood not laser. The veneer or finish on the top is different and the shapes and concave is different between BBs and Ps that you can always tell if you look at a bunch of bbs and ps side by side from different brands, ps stix tend to be more rectangular and the rails are less rounded than a generator, also the stains are slightly different. Bbs also has I II III IV for where it was on the press stamped on the top bolts numbers donít have that not even under the sticker instead they have a single dot imprint like ps stix do . Final reason is that the guys at the shop noticed the first ever drop were BBS/generator with the warning labels and I II III IV markings and then when the second drop came in they were different with the girl doing math laser engraved like ps stix are and just looked different looked exactly like ps stix wood.

How shitty is dwindle wood these days?
I really want to buy an enjoi at some point because I love those guys (and gal), but I donít want a poopy board.  They say their boards single pressed and use some gnarly epoxy thatís probably illegal in the US, which all sounds interesting, but Iíve heard bad stuff about the boards over the years.

I donít give a shit that theyíre made in China, because so is everything else i own.  I just donít want a board that sucks.
Title: Re: Woodshop Directory 2017 Thread
Post by: chodekaka on December 02, 2017, 05:26:48 AM
When you buy it look at the top bolts, you want it to say Resin 7 Hard Rock Maple if its not hard rock maple don't get it. Also don't buy the ones with 30 day warranty (unless it says hard rock maple) look for 60 or 90 day warranty ones but above all look for it to say hard rock somewhere on the packaging instead of just resin epoxy hybrid or resin 7 or 100 percent canadian maple. Usually if you are buying the pro decks instead of logo ones it will be a 90 day warranty and hard rock maple and those ones are crisp and really good. All the impact stuff is amazing.

IMO even the basic "Resin" price-point ones hold up as well or better than a lot of whats out there. The Resin-7's last forever though. Dwindle's boards are good, go for it and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Iím always surprised at the hate for dwindle boards because they are really light and crisp and they offer different price points which is unique and they have really good labeling of the dimensions and concave and steep kick or mellow kick and the impact ones are probably the best boards other than Powell flight. But are you a heavy guy? The price point ones have pressure cracked around the bolts really fast for me 3 times itís the only boards to ever do that to me. Or you get a dry one and they snap under the front bolts  I respectfully disagree they last longer than most stuff out there. They are lower priced decent bang for your buck if you are tight on cash but they donít last longer than literally anything. Also the budget ones usually have a really mellow shape with small noses. It would be the baseline they build those decks into completes with no name trucks to sell to Zumiez. I would spend the extra 20 bucks buy the regular priced hard rock ones and those are equal or better than ps stix or bbs.

Actually there are kind of three, The budget ones donít even say 100 percent Canadian Maple. Those suck. Then ones that say resin 7 100 percent Canadian Maple which I would say is equal to everything out there. Then the pro name boards that also say hard rock maple are really awesome. The impact plus is the best thing Iíve tried. Anyways that is just my opinions what Iíve noticed about dwindle boards I saw tj Rogers in toronto once and asked him a bunch of questions about dwindle boards cause I was curious and he told me about looking out for it to say hard rock or get the impact. I dunno the pricing in the USA but in Canada impact is almost the same price as a regular deck or sometimes just the same price which is really awesome.

I also don't jump down anything so there is that may be the reason for our differing experiences, but for me the cheap ones have lasted pretty much as long as the R-7's, but the R-7's do keep super rigid longer when the pricepoints are a little saggy but still very skate-able.

Pretty sure BBS doesn't mark all their boards with the Roman numerals just some DLX stuff....I thought I saw laser etching on habitat stuff after they switched....

I don't think dwindles stuff is bad but I still try and avoid buying stuff from China when I can and I'm not crazy about the brands anyhow....I skated a bunch of resin boards when they first came out and thought they were fine...

Those are the only two that matter really in terms of big time board companies, Pennswood or South Central are great but only indy companies tend to use those.

Anyone have any info on the woodshop pressing Charlie Thomas' brand, Preservation Co? The local shop just got a shipment in and they have a few shapes that look fun. One has the shovel nose and squarish tail, similar to the Black Label Curb Crusher with the skate crutch graphic that Im riding now. If I was to stack both decks together, its almost identical (besides the graphics), so Im guessing BBS.

Answering my own question here.  A few of their deck are PS and the others just have the dot and width size stamped on the top front truck holes.

Standing on the deck, they feel a little wobbly.  The concave has a weird, super flat bottom with a med concave that shoots up pretty quickly. I passed on them all...

riding a studio board right now. it seems like they are the only ones that press their boards at Control. the board has a nice shape. wish the nose and tail was a little more steep, but that's just me that like a steep nose and tail. it's very springy, it feels soggy to stand on but ollies springs you up in the air. been skating it every day for soon a month and it holds up nicely. could absolutely skate it for some more weeks. but my local shop is having a spring sale, so i'm picking up a polar deck, since i feel like they serve me the best.

Sorry to bump an oldish thread, but I figured it would be more appropriate to ask here than start a new one. Iím in the market for blanks and was curious if anyone knows where SoCal skate shop sources theirs from? They wonít reveal. Also, how are Chapmanís? Never rode one but they seem to be a top supplier of blanks with direct shipment no matter how many you order, and Iím curious if anyone can attest to their quality. Much appreciated.
There's a 2018 woodshop thread.
