For you to go skate? Do you have a degree cut off?

14°F is too cold for me. I hate the bushing squeaks too much.
I wish it was 14°C.
-
Never too cold, just too wet
-
I'm up here in Canada .I'd say anything below 0 celsius I don't bother trying. I can never warm up my feet no matter what.
-
When my clap drip freezes to my junk
-
A calm and sunny day even down to -8C is do-able for a cruise or short curb sesh or whatever, but wind and snow can make skating impossible or just way to cold even at warmer temps, the wind is really the determining factor here
-
It depends on the humidity for me. A dry cold is bearable but as just a little moisture and it's time to go home.

oh shit thats Fahrenheit?! yeah fuck that

I don't mind lower 20s Fahrenheit, below that it's tough to gauge. Wind plays a bigger factor for me, especially if I'm going to skate around to different spots in the neighborhood, nothing worst than some cold Arctic air blowing you in the face as you push; worse yet is in the early spring and having wind blast you. Absolutely hate it.
-
Anything above freezing and it’s pretty easy to be comfortable. Sunny and in the 20’s Fahrenheit feels warmer than it actually is. Problem is you gotta keep moving after you start to sweat or you’ll go from hot and steamy to cold and wet.
-
I'm in Southern California, our newscasters put out "Cold Weather Warnings" if it's going to be 50F haha. Sweater weather at best here,I always feel for anyone shoveling snow or layering up because thats gnarly
-
i think that having clothes baggy enough to layer shit under is part of the Canadian baggy image and stereotype

I used to do flatground in the garage but it's shit. Can't move properly and falling hurts like hell. Also, snot flies everywhere.

I’m dyin to skate, feel like I haven’t really in a month but idk bruh... that’s not a lot of degrees...
-
Once it hits about fifteen degrees things get pretty miserable. Not to derail the convo either, but I will say, investing in a proper set of baselayers and a windproof jacket will really help out whenever it's super cold outside. Most people who wear cotton--t-shirt, hoodie, longsleeve, whatever--next to their skin put themselves in a pretty crappy position as soon as they begin to sweat because that material soaks up moisture and keeps it close to your skin, which, in turn, makes you pretty damn cold. Add in a top layer that allows wind to penetrate, and you're basically screwed 'cause that cold air is going to push right through to your core, cool down that layer of sweat even more, and your body is pretty much robbed of any insulation it may have worked to create.
-

I genuinely cant even fathom what that kinda temperature must feel like
-
Honestly, anything below 35F if there's any amount of wind is my rule of thumb, especially if I'm going to end up filming/standing still in damp clothes. Didn't use to be though.
Whoever mentioned base layers in this thread is 100% correct. Someone on slap put me on to base layers a few years ago and I never looked back.
-
I've skated the last 3 days in a row and it's been windy and moist, lots of snot, hoodies shifting around mid trick, and 2 tees and I keep forgetting to put tall socks on, my ankles have been cold.
-
LOL @ the Gucci Mane pic up there. 35F is my cutoff point here in the Midwest. I always wear a layer of thermals...
-
school's canceled at -30 where i come from, always looked forward to it being officially too cold. as far as skating, it's the rocksalt and gravel that end the season

I have to work in that, and much colder temps. you get acclimated to it and its not too bad. other than your hands and face get fucked up pretty good.
Its mid day now so its probably warmer, but ill post up a pic to show yas, with wind chill it was -47 this am, thats pretty cold lol

Eh, I was out skating in single digits last year since it was still dry. Main thing is slamming feels worse and your feet get hella cold. But I'm a Minnesota native and I'm also used to biking all winter long so maybe it's just me. But as long as it's dry and I've got long johns it's all good.

Duuuuuude c'mon. 40F is friggin' warm as shit when you're on the East Coast! T-shirt weather!
-
In Canada, as long as there's no snow or frost, we skate.
-
I'm back in my hometown for the holidays and went skating the other day in 35F and it was pretty sketchy not only for the cold. I was skating this covered marble spot and it felt like an ice rink with all the humidity. I was scared to do a lot of tricks I normally do. This is probably because I'm living where it's 60+ all December long atm, it's really amazing.
When I was in highschool I used to skate around the 0C mark all winter, shoveling snow and layering up like an onion but fuck that I don't miss it at all. Plus all my friends come up with even more excuses and I have to lone wolf it.
-
Too cold for me is anything below 45. Although I seem to get stuck in 40 degree weather from time to time cause my skate homies are stubborn and want to skate in some cold ass shit. I was raised skating in Hawaii and now live in Colorado and I hate the friggn' cold.

Currently -27 where I am. I've skated flatground in -10ish but can't do it for long since everything tightens up
-
I would skate in low single digit weather almost every day back when I still lived in the northeast. Every winter I’d swap vulcs for a cupsole, wear wool socks with a backup pair in my bag, and would rock underarmour tops and bottoms under my clothes. You’re fucked if you slam before you’re fully warmed up though. You can’t shake that pain away when it’s that cold

Gotta tuck in the first layer and keep that body heat circulating.

It was around 25 F with a decent amount of wind today. I just said fuck it and bundled up and was able to get a solid session at my local park. Just gotta keep skating around to stay warm.

Shouldn't be any sort of struggle. Beanie, long sleeve shirt, and you're good to go 35 and up, anything down to about 20 you'll need a sweater, and below that throw a windbreaker on over it

It's really all about moisture management because moisture and cold air don't mix well. Think about whenever you're in a hot shower and you're fine because there's fresh warm water running continually, but as soon as you step out and are exposed to cooler air with a a bit of water on your body, you're much colder. Also, certain fibers are a lot more effective at pulling moisture away from your body and onto the face of the fabric so that you remain dry and work to keep itself warm while your sweat is pushed forward and allowed to dry quickly off of the face of the fabric. Like I said, cotton is pretty crappy for managing moisture because it just retains your sweat and continually soaks it up and doesn't dry quickly at all. Merino wool and polyester are probably your best bet, with merino being better but more expensive. I use Patagonia's thermal weight baselayer because they're very lightweight and don't add unnecessary bulk to restrict your mobility when skating; they also have a ribbed fleece interior that pulls your sweat forward while the non-ribbed part adds some breathability. I guess the next step is something that can insulate. If it's not super cold, like ten to upper teens, a hoody and a sweatshirt or something like that will work just fine in combination with a windbreaker, and while it may be made from cotton, it's not as large a concern since it's not right at your body--still, however, it's best to avoid cotton whenever you can. If you're really dedicated and it's colder than that, I'd use a jacket with either down or synthetic insulation. Like the wool, down will be lighter but a bit more costly. Then last is a windbreaker so that cold air/wind doesn't penetrate all of the insulation your body has worked to create. Another key thing is to avoid cotton socks if you can. Socks are another time where merino wool prevails because you won't be faced with moisture being near your feet and having to worry about it cooling you down. My response is probably a bit lengthy and nerdy, but I spend a lot of time outside during the winter off of my skateboard and a lot of the same techniques cross over really well to cruising around on shitty days.

If the sun is out, it's dry and your bushings aren't frozen then why not?

When I was younger there was no temp limit, just whenever there was no snow/we found some shelter we would skate, coldest would have been -28C where my bushings froze and exploded. Nowadays if it’s under +10C I’d rather go some indoor park ;D I live in southern part of Finland.

Why's the warmest day when it's snowing tho 😩
It's always a bit warmer when it snows.
One thing is for sure, it's too cold for my water pipes, they froze this morning, and now I have to go down to the cellar and warm those fuckers up.
It's single digits here in WI all week. I have a little bank ramp and quarter pipe in a shed, and also recently got a pellet burning stove. It's just enough room to move around in, I'd suggest it as otherwise I'd be going crazy.

I second this. uniqlo heattech is great for the cold. when I lived in NYC I skated in 2 degree weather as long as it was dry. wearing a hat, hoodie and jacket is essential for me when I skate in the cold. once you get warmed up, it’s not bad. I mostly just cruise around when it’s cold. also, before you head out, it’s good to do some pre-skate warming up indoors - dynamic stretches and what not.

apparently 25F is too cold here. We waxed a new ledge and ran a little contest on Insta to give away a board, and not a single person has posted a clip yet hahahaha now i'm sad :( :( :(

Now that I'm in my 40's, 30*F or so will make me not even think about going skating. Usually ice and snow is a bigger deterrent than temp. In my 20's though it was very common to find a parking garage, sweep it out and session with friends until 1:00-2:00 in the morning regardless of temperature. You'd start off bundled up and and freezing. But after a while, you would get hot and it was down to t-shirts and pants. Steam billowing off of every inch of exposed skin. Have some great memories of those sessions because I think everyone that was there was focused because of the conditions we were dealing with. Anyway, to answer the op's question... 30*s turns me into a chump these days.

went skating downtown kc solo tonight.
25 and wet ground was icy for the most part fun as fuck though
could of went to the indoor but theres too many coolguys there. Any colder then 15 degrees and my bushings are frozen solid

anybody have good tips for skating in the cold, mainly dealing with hard bushings

-
I remember shoveling snow n skating in -25 -30 in Calgary when Mills first opened. Dillz was out there shoveling with me , my favorite Calgary loc.
Now I stop at -10.
-
I guess a other question is
How smoky is too smoky?
With the current state of California up in a blaze. Where do you stop at air quality. Last two days was awful, today the visabilty is a bit better. Is it less healthy getting exercise?
-
I live in Brazil, so it never gets too cold to skate. Lowest in my city is 16ºC, which is still pretty skateable.
-
I live in Switzerland where it can get pretty cold between December and March.
I'm 36 and can't be bothered skating outside if it's 0 Celsius or colder anymore.
Luckily, there's an indoor park close to mine. It's not heated but we can usually skate there comfortably. Last winter, I couldn't skate one day as my bushings froze but otherwise it was fine.

-
Any temp below 55F (13C) and I’m over it. I’ve been wanting to move where I can skate all year round and the temp doesn’t get any lower than that, within The States. If anyone has any recommendations I’d appreciate it.
-
Below 45 and it sucks. We used to film and make montages and stuff. I have no idea how looking back.
-
20 degrees is the cut off for a full session, any colder and you end up sitting in the car with the bushings near the defrost every 30 minutes or so. This is with little wind chill though, if the wind picks up its really fucked.

Any temp below 55F (13C) and I’m over it. I’ve been wanting to move where I can skate all year round and the temp doesn’t get any lower than that, within The States. If anyone has any recommendations I’d appreciate it.

One of the best sessions I've ever had was in the middle of a light snowfall at night when my highschool buddy got out of juvenile and wanted to skate..we hit the school parking lot; double sided curbs, curb cuts and a small stair set. However that was in the 90s. I'm now in my 40s and went skating on my street today after getting the snow tires out of storage (about 2 C) and after 5 minutes I was a snot encrusted old man with bad knees. So I'll say sunny and 10 C or I'm drinking beer inside.

I live in Brazil, so it never gets too cold to skate. Lowest in my city is 16ºC, which is still pretty skateable.
Not trying to make this a reverse dick-measuring contest -- you know what the cold does to one's private parts -- but I've skated in the Mantiqueira and it can get pretty cold in my town, for BR standards. Like below 10c, which is nothing and totally manageable with some minor layering... but a great excuse to just stay home instead of making the most of the "jacket weather". And then complain once the rainy season starts come october... risos risos.
That's probably because of the height, when I lived near Cantareira's Ridge it was obviously colder than the neighborhood I currently live, even it is in the same town. Also, fucking classic nickname.
-
i actually dont mind skating in the cold except for hard bushings

Gosha ripping during a Moscow winter.

I can manage the cold as long as I have a place that is sheltered from the wind. My favorite winter skate sessions were at an unheated warehouse in a super cold city. The first half hour sucked because I had to wear my heavy jacket and two sweatshirts, but after that the layers came off and it was a blast. It was way more fun than the local indoor park.

That part is insane. Thanks for sharing, never seen that

long johns + corduroy pants keeps your legs warm if you keep moving around. ~40°F is about the cutoff for me depending on the wind. wind sucks.
-
Below 0 degrees Celsius I draw the line and go snowboarding instead.
-
ive skated parks at negative numbers in the winter causing fucking ice patches to form that wasnt fun
as long as it's sheltered from bittery winter winds it's not too bad, just get ya layers up
-
As long as the ground is dry and it isn't snowing. I'll skate in whatever temp.
Slamming in the cold really seems to suck more though.
Coldest I've skated was -20C. The miniramp had a roof but no walls. Chilly but worth every second.

In the winter we usually end up skating in big parking garages so being somewhat indoors keeps things tolerable. I remember one time when we were skating a park in the winter, everyone had water bottles sitting on a ledge and they all froze

Im from the Northwest Territories, Canada. Basically arctic/ sub-arctic, light out all day in the summer, but Ive also grown up with 8 month winters and didnt have an indoor place till I was 15/ 16 that was open once a week. Plug your car in in the winter, 4 hours of sunlight in the winter, -40 celsius is normal, ive worked outside in -60C. That being said when I was younger I skated in -10C but now my body wouldnt let me do that.

Not doing the winter thing this year. Just go indoors.

Went double pants, double sweater last year. But I might go for some thermal gear this year. Fuck the cold man.

Too early in the season to bump this thread. This is prime skating weather, minus the rain this week. I’m not ready to think about true cold and dark yet :'(

I have some thermal shit left over from when I was out there tryna be a courier but I can't fucking find it now. Knowing my luck my ex's current dude is probably wearing it while they are out there doing delightfully bland chill yuppie shit.
Who am I kidding. That guy totally owns way more expensive thermal underclothrings

i rely on the winter season up here in canada to save my health/ right calf
i'll swim and skate twice a month at the indoor

I kind of like skating in the cold. I've posted this a bunch because this thread comes up every once in awhile, but this is me skating in 24 Degrees Fahrenheit. I guess, I'd draw the like at single digit Fahrenheit. I'm also skating my curiser board in this because it was really windy.

Maryland is unpredictable, sometimes we go an entire winter with no snow and temps always above 0F, sometimes we have 4 feet of snow and temps below 0F for a week straight. Really just depends on moisture. Long johns help a lot though. And winter means more clothes = more padding.
Fuck wind though. I am really tall and really light, so I get carried away by it.
-
For you to go skate? Do you have a degree cut off?
I'm 33 if the temperature drops below my age I stay in.

This dude! I had a little bit of contact with him while making the aforementioned. The coldest it really got was around 20f with windchill making it feel colder (the ender trick session - we could literally hear and feel the VX working overtime) so I can only imagine how -20 or whatever felt.

^I forgot about that, so fucked. Fuck wax, bring salt.
At what point are boards effected by the cold? A humid day makes the deck feel a bit soggy, would the cold make it more brittle?
-
temps supposed to be high of 70 tomorrow, then 68 on wednesday before dropping to 19 wednesday night with Snow coming in 2-12" forecasted for thursday and a high of 30, low of 5. Looks like we'll warm back up into the 50's on Sunday but damn thats going to put a damper on our fall skating. We'll be shoveling out the skatepark so it can dry up and we can skate for mid october, but after that our skatepark might be buried for the winter until about april/may

It sucks and most of us agree we lost tricks last winter. You just gotta wanna do it. Have two setups - one you can trash (because salt and snow and ice WILL trash your board) and one for the indoor.

Bulls still come out when it's 10oF in Philly

As long as it’s not snowing/raining and relatively dry I’ll skate all year. Bundle up initially but after about 30 minutes I’m good in jeans and a hoodie as long as it’s not ludicrously Co ld

Damn multiple people in here callin it quits at 50 degrees? Where the hell are yall from? I hate the cold too, a lot, but I hate getting rusty and losing tricks more.

Salute god, I've been out skating when it's that cold. That said, I dunno if a Detroit 10o is that much different than a Philly 10o though but shit is far too gnarly if there's a slight breeze....
-
5C / 40F is probably the comfort limit these days.
-
As long as the wind isn't super gnarly, shit isn't all frosty and I can get warmed up I'd say between 10* and 15* fahrenheit but I'm from Michigan and my idea of cold is probably fucked compared to most people.

I don't skate in any temp below my age

Anything lower than 45F and I'm going to an indoor park. I'm from Texas. We suck at being cold.

Single digits is when I just do flatground in the garage.

Anything below 30 and I'm done. We have a great indoor (Olliewood Action Sports)
here and Chestnut Mountain and Sundown Mountain 20 minutes away. If its cold I'm Snowboarding or skating warm indoor wood ramps.
-
Just as long as it doesn’t snow, then I’m fine, I live in a state where it’s usually hot so I will not complain at all if it’s cold
-
Yesterday was probably too cold, I think it was single digits here. Today is sunny and back in the 30s so I'm going out.
-
This is my first NY winter where I am not skating as much... I want to blame it on the cold weather or that I hate when my bushings get cold.. but the truth is I am just working too much and don't have the drive to skate when I am burnt out
-
i snow skate in -35 it really aint shit if you know how to dress
-
I won’t skate below my age. I’m 36. Which 36 ain’t bad. But I set that rule in my 30s. And I keep it every year.
My girlfriend may need to relocate to be near Virginia in the next 3-5 years so we been looking around New Hampshire. For places and I don’t know how I’m gonna survive. I’m from the Midwest and I assume the winters there will be worse.
-
< 1°C and i am out. everything >= 1°C is a go.

If it’s below 40 I don’t skate. I can’t have fun.

personally, the wind is more of a pain in the ass to me than the actual cold. it can be like 10 degrees and windy as fuck and its worse than -20 with no wind
Very true. I'm in Minneapolis and it gets brutally cold. I've always applied the theory of skating my age to what the temp is. So when I was 16 I would still go out in 16 degree weather to skate. Now in my 40s the same rule is in effect.
-
5C / 40F is probably the comfort limit these days.
Yeah, this is probably where I'm at as well. Maybe bump that up to 8 C / 46 F. Last year we had an exceptionally warm March and I was skating in close to freezing temps, which I believe helped irritate a nerve in my left leg. So I've got to be more discerning about the cold from now on.
-
Have you seen the indoor parks in Europe?! Why aren’t there a few up and down the east coast?

I can bundle up and deal with it in the 30's generally. I've done mid 20's when I'm really itchin' but that's pushing it. It's been freezing here lately so when I stepped outside this morning and it was about 34 degress Fahrenheit it actually felt pretty nice in comparison.
-

Don't know if it's just me getting old but this winter in particular is one of the harshest I've seen here. Super dry cold and at the same time still penetrates your bones, think countryside style. I always absolutely adored winter for skating though (fall being my favorite season), and I love layering up. Battling heat into your legs with every push all the while engulfed in two pairs of pants, long sleeve shirt under a couple of hoodies if necessary and then a jacket, scarf. I was never one to care about looks, I just want to feel like I'm in a blanket whilst skating at this point - softens slams too. People have given me shit before because even in the summer I'll be wearing long sleeves and hoodies (I've skated in Rio de Janeiro in long sleeves) but I'll gladly roll with that because either way I'm going to keep doing it.

Like others have said, the wind makes it suck worse than cold. 30 is my cutoff but it has to be somewhat calm. Thermals underneath the regular gear. Dress in layers. Coffee is your friend. Oh, and a good pair of gloves.
I tried 29 degrees and wind the other day and it was a five minute sesh of misery. Hence the 30 degree cutoff.

The other sunday, everything was wet and it was 9°C (48°F). I am trying to break in the Indy aftermarket 92 barrel bushings.
Landed a heelflip a bit off center and my bushings got stuck in that crooked position. It felt like a broken kingpin to me, checked everything. Nothing is broken, just that it feels really weird on my board now.
Maybe 92d bushings are too hard for colder temperatures? Will try again this weekend. If it still feels weird, I will put the 90d bottom bushings back in.
Thanks for listening to this episode of bushing madness.

Central midwest here - just went out on my lunch break, it's about 38F with ample sun. Felt great by the end of my 30 min session, decent sweat going and popping some solid ollies.
Yesterday was actually colder despite it being warmer out, about 44F. I even saw another skater in my apartment complex when I went for a walk after work so I felt some solidarity haha. As others have said, the breeze/wind will absolutely ruin the fun! It sucks tearing up while trying to skate, or sniffling like crazy.
My limit is about 35F depending on the sun and wind. I don't usually go to parks in the winter unless it's 45F or warmer. Not visiting the indoor park lately bc of COVID raging. My limit is pretty low bc I'm a lazy 28 year old, but I do get cooped up and want to skate as much as possible. Grateful for the past two days being warm enough.
-
Anything below 40 I'm probably not going to skate unless the sun's out and there's a good sesh happening.
I used to skate no matter the temp but at 29 I just don't care. I also despise the cold with every fiber of my being

I skated in -27C (-16F) yesterday. There's hardly any snow so some of the parks are partially skateable. The biggest problems were my toes and face freezing. I did 3 half hour sessions with 10 minute breaks in the car to warm up.

We have a winner!
Also loling at the Darkthrone video, thanks for the memories.
I honestly prefer a dry freezing day around 0 to -5°C to a wet one at +5° C. But a serious session is not happening then, just a quick cruise to stay sane. Maybe some mini miniramp action. Can't stand skating in longjohns, also.
-
30 is my cutoff but it has to be somewhat calm.
pretty much this for me too
-
just get a balaclava and ur good
tuck your track pants into your high tops
wear mitts for sure
-
Preferably nothing under the upper 30s. Once it gets below that I have a hard time warming up. If it’s in the upper 30s or above though I usually just have to move around for like ten minutes or so and I’ll warm up. I warm up pretty easily, to where I’ll be skating in like 37 degree weather in like a t-shirt eventually. Once I stop and rest for like a few minutes though I’m right back to freezing and need to rewarm up again, so the secret is never stopping moving until you’re done with the sesh.
-
Anything below 0 degrees centigrade for me is generally a no go, takes forever to warm up and it's way too easy to pull or strain something.
-
Single digits this week.
Too cold to go out

its not about temperature its about if the park or spot is covered in 50 cm of snow
