Whats your favorite modest mouse song/album?
-
Can't even pick out a favorite song, cause there's too many good ones, but Lonesome Crowded West is my favorite overall MM album.
Pitchfork is pretty lame, but I remember really enjoying this documentary:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=G33AcZzZ0pM
And even though it's not a "proper" album, I really like Building Something out of Nothing.

impossible to answer .. good thread
i tend to lean towards the slower songs though

-
i like so many songs. slow ones are dope but desert/tundra and cockroach are some of the best. and the one that starts w/ isaac talking 'what's up? make lover?' and ends w/ 'they [people] ain't made of nothing but water and shit. alright!'
i kinda played em to death and haven't tried to listen to anything they've done in the last 8-10 yrs.
-
the never ending math equation one is good. Pretty neat band. Good to put on when drinking. I also haven't listened to them in 15 years.
-
Night on the Sun could be a favorite, that whole EP was dope.

Building nothing out of something probably has the most re-play value.
-
I never actually listened to Night on the Sun, but have heard most of those songs on ....Nasty Parlour Tricks.
Good stuff yeah.
That Sun Kil Moon cover album of MM songs is worth listening to, if you're a fan of either.

modest mouse has got nothing to do with mice.
-
All great, Lonesome Crowded West for sure however, for nostalgic reasons and things that I was going through at the time, Good News For People Who Love Bad News comes at second. As lame as this probably is, I love Shit Luck, that has to be my favorite song. It's the first song I heard of them through the Toy Machine ad in Misled Youth. I was 13 or 14 the first time I saw that video and heard the song. I'm 30 now and enjoy it just as much as the first time.
-
Lonesome crowded west is by far my favorite album. Doin the cockroach is my favorite song, and that pitchfork documentary is dope.
I've seen Modest Mouse twice although they play mostly new shit and I never got into much past GNFPWLBN
-
Absolutely love modest mouse. My favorite album is sad sappy sucker and i also really enjoy their demo tapes. One song mistitled "feelings" can be found on youtube and that has to be my favorite song ever. The whistling at the end is beautiful.
-
My favorite is probably Lonesome Crowded West with This Is A Long Drive at a very close second. I like pretty much everything they've done except for Stranger To Ourselves. It has a couple decent moments, but as a whole it just felt like another indie rock band you'd hear in a Zach Braff film or something. Even Good News and everything that followed I thought was a pretty smooth transition to being a more accessible band, because the songs still had lots of interesting layers and weren't afraid to get weird, but I just can't say the same about their last release.

trick question lemmy is god
older stuff is great
up until float on shit was sweet
had some old demo that was tight the name escapes me

how do yall feel about ugly cass?

-
Ugly casanova has it's moments. Really like that song hotcha girls
-
Man, good thread.
Moon and Antartica was good too.
But must agree, Lonesome Crowded West/This Is A Long Drive are the favourites for sure.
Ugly Casanova was also super good. Actually got a bunch of the Thomas Campbell artwork from that album tattooed.
Only got to see them play live once and they actually played a ton of old stuff.
-
Post some of the Ugly Casanova tats?
-
I have nothing personal against MM, they make really good music. But I have an irrational disdain for them because they were on the same record label as Duster at the same time and MM got big while Duster didn't.

Lonesome Crowded West. Saw them in Fukuoka, Japan, in 2000. When I went to the bathroom in the back, Isaac walked by with a tall boy in his hand. There was almost no one at the show, maybe 10 people at most. I didn't listen to much of their music after that time except when hearing the big hits like that float on song.
-
My brother's two favorite skate videos when we were growing up were Art Bars and One Step Beyond- both had songs from the Moon and Antarctica, so I may have to call that album a personal favorite. Lonesome Crowded west is a masterpiece, though.
-
He stayed at someones house i knew and theyre all ib the garage and Brock cut his hand and passed out cause of the sight of his own blood.

Trailer Trash. That bassline is brilliant. Eric Judy is their secret weapon.
-
I've made more attempts to get into this band than any other band out there and I still can't say I'm a fan. They've got great songs, but I have never been able to put on an album and stay interested all the way through. My wife recently played Lonesome Crowded West while we were taking down Christmas decorations and that was the closest I've ever come to enjoying a full album, so I might give that another shot again.
I think that I like them when other people play them, but I don't when I do.
-
Not a fan of the berries, but I enjoyed this

a friend of mine the other day told me he's seen isaac around portland a few times, and one time told him to refer to him as mr. brock.
as far as albums go, probably gonna say *right now* its this is a long drive & sad sappy sucker. gotta thank cairo foster's real part for getting me into them.
the live stuff's where its at though!

The View always cheers me up, I saw them in 2017
-
One of my all time favorite bands. I have seen them three times at three terrible places to see a band, two festivals and a casino.
The first time I saw them I was 17 and they were fantastic. The second time they were pretty good but I blame Boston calling, nobody has good sets there. The third time was at Foxwoods and casino shows are the worst so I don’t blame them at all.
-
I honestly would cherish the memory of seeing Modest Mouse at Foxwoods, even if and maybe especially if it was a terrible show. Shoutout to Ledyard.

seen them at a few festivals and yeah, haven’t had good experiences with that. they’re nothing like when they play on their own tours. and they don’t play float on! i like seeing them when it’s been a while they’ve released anything, so you’ll get some golden treats every once in a while (teeth like gods shoeshine, alone down there, night on the sun, baby blue sedan...)
-
Still waiting to see them for the first time... At least next week I'm going to Built To Spill ;D

keep it like a secret!
they play here in november, i’ll definitely be there for that.

Is float on comparable to what creep is to Radiohead fans? I always liked float on and the rest of Good news for people who love bad news. I’ll admit not as much as their other albums, but I didn’t realize people hated float on.

i don't get the hate on that single. i think it's because it was their breakout single to the mainstream after they got a bit saturated in skate videos.
living in houston at the time it was a no brainer to like them

MM rules . So many epic songs

I don't listen to MM too much anymore, but they were my favorite band from maybe age 14 through college. The eerie little solo during Dramamine is to this day probably the most evocative piece of sound I can think of.

yeaa pretty much it's the mainstream one. good news was a good album though! just would sometimes rather see an older song being played.
damn, havent seen that clip in a while! i remember using skatevideosite.com to track all the videos mm was used in. so sick.
-
i'd compare float on more to karma police in terms of mainstream appeal. college girls that would probably hate most radiohead or MM would listen to those songs on repeat

listened to this today

old ass bootleg modest mouse
thought it was worth sharing-they come on around the 20+ minute mark
-
They came on randomly the other day and I liked what I heard so I gave them another shot for the millionth time and I think it finally clicked. Played Lonesome Crowded West from front to back and I can dig it. It's a bit long of an album for my attention span, but I really like all the jams they kept in and how loose the music feels. Reminded me of jamming with my buddies in my parents basement back when we were young and how much fun that was.
EDIT: I just watched the pitchfork doc and theres a part at the end where the bass player says something like "we were young and not knowing exactly what we were doing, and that really helped us make a neat record." That's exactly what those jams felt like to me while listening to it. It's not that any of it was "bad" but you can really tell that they didn't care about trying to do things "good" or "right" if that makes any sense. I like that a lot. That's how I learned how to play music.
This one is probably my favorite track. The drums are awesome.

Trailer Trash hit close to home no pun intended. That song and Cowboy Dan still get me fucked up.

Yeah my exgf tried to get me in to this band, I hesitantly admit I tried to like em but sadly the dudes voices drives me batshit much like Ghost Mice along with Operation Cliff Clavin.

I'm going with never ending math equation, Cairo's part was my intro to the band so this one always stands out for me
