Share the song, explain why you don't like the band and why you do like the song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLm3Khusq_8
Why I don't like the band:
I don't know if I can wholly say I don't like INXS, because I've always appreciated them for being the corniest band. Their singer looks like he walked off the cover of a romance novel and then did a bunch of cocaine off of that romance novel. Their songs sound like that too. Again, that's kind of what I appreciate about them, but they're not a band I listen to with a straight face.
Why I do like the song:
This one I can and do listen to with a straight face. The first time I heard it, I thought it was Echo and the Bunnymen or The Jesus and Mary Chain. It's driving, catchy, and genuine. It was kind of exciting to find out INXS wrote a song like that. It's like finding out your little sister's lazy, dropout, pizza-roll-stained-shirt-wearing boyfriend is secretly a great florist or something.

the eagles suck, but this is just too catchy.
i kinda like hotel california too as corny as that song is.
i tried to come up with more stuff to write but i really cant think of much to more to say other than the eagles are really fucking boring, but this song has a solid groove.

The Beach Boys were mostly posers when it comes to surfing and even though people praise them they're just like the Beatles to me,overrated. However this song haunts me and if it ever comes on I listen to it. JB I also think the Eagles suck,my boss loves them and one day at work he only played their greatest hits for hours on end as torture.
A close second is this song:

As stated I'm not a fan of the Beatles but I like this song, mainly because Lemmy covered it

After that I just sort of realised every band I don't like has at least one song I will like,maybe...

CocoRosie "Werewolf"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51K4cUTuvc0
Heard this song in a local skate video, and loved it. It's super strange, and one of kind type sound. Unfortunately, my interest in their music doesn't transcribe throughout the rest of their discography. Aside from a few songs, all their albums are too strange and experimental for my taste. "Werewolf" will always remind me of my good ol' days of 2009 when everyone wore corduroys..
See: "Lemonade" and "Smokey Taboo"

i cant stand the beach boys either. rock and roll has never sounded so wimpy.
the beatles could rock but i understand why some people dont like them. but if you dont like the stones then you're just a fucking loser.
I'll add another. I just don't like Modest Mouse. I've tried so hard to like them over the years, but I just can't. I had a friend who I used to skate with all the time and he never took The Moon and Antarctica out of his CD player and it drove me crazy. Almost everyone I grew up with loves this band and I think because they're so hugely appreciated is why I've tried over and over again to like their stuff. My biggest problem with music is that I don't pay much attention to lyrics and if the music itself isn't very lively or energetic, then it's not exciting enough for me to listen. Most fans tell me that it's the lyrics that draws them to Modest Mouse, and while they have some heavier songs that I do enjoy, the lyrics are not enough to get me through the slower songs and play a full album of theirs front to back without wanting to turn it off and put on the Stooges or something actually goes.
I love this song though. I'm sure the part has something to do with it too.

Yea The Stones are damn good! Minty there's so many songs from skate video's I love, but everything else in said band's repertoire isn't as listenable, pretty sure I'm not alone here.
-
In general I don't like the Dead but truckin is rad. On down the line by the Stones. Boys of summer, don henley
I don't know why I don't really dig the stones other then shiddy records (Imo) -The Beetles were incredible they didn't need the blues shtick cause they had a revolutionary sound. The Dead can be down right offensive like they thrive on it. Don Henely - Seems self rightous or something. edit also throw in the 2nt track from Bleach (which I purchased in the 80s) I find Nirvana pretty annoying cause the vocals maybe ? but not on that song.

think i tried to like this guy's other songs behind this one. i was locked up as a kid w/ a walkman that got college radio from CT and this song, the pixies, tori amos, mad shit but they never announced the names and there wasn't google in mid 90s so i just figured it by talking to people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yXqRiXMru0
also this one. it was kinda catchy then i figured the lyrics and as an ex drinker it's relatable. her other stuff don't do it for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTFSteGdktU
yo, god forgive me for saying it but 'headache' by frank black may be the perfect pop song but i'm not really fucking w/ his solo work too much. maybe if he didn't usedta be black francis i wouldn't judge it so harsh?
speaking of perfect pop song 'goodbye horses' but i can't tell you another song by Q lazaras.

The Beatles are the most overrated band of all time and I've never heard a song of theirs I didn't think was hipster bullshit. This is tight though.

man... i feel like I'd have a million of answers to this thread but I'm having a tougher time then I thought. It's hard because I can find good merit in a lot of bands that I don't really care for, and it's hard not to think of 1 hit wonder bands like When In Rome who everybody knows sucks and only know for one song.
I have a few suggestions though...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ2cEc_TCH8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ2cEc_TCH8)
I hate this band, mostly because they're awful 80's hits like Pulling Mussels and Tempted by the Fruit of Another as some of the crappiest AOR 80's yacht-rock ever made. Still, I kinda like this song, catchy in that new wave/almost punkish sound. Up The Junction is not a bad song either.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6oIOI9-r5I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6oIOI9-r5I)
I do not like the Grateful Dead, and I've tried to listen to them many different ways, I could just never get into it. Has nothing to do with the fanbase either. This song however is a ripper, and wish they would've tried a little heavier sound more frequently.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJzNZ1c5C9c (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJzNZ1c5C9c)
corny as fuck, but goddamnit I like this song. It's catchy, always seems to turn into a raised beer sing-a-long at weddings, and kinda romantic. everything else they do sucks, though.
quick sidebar... kinda surprised how many of you hate the Beatles. Yes they're overrated (in a way) and it's annoying how much we are told they're the greatest band ever, but there's some really great tracks buried in all that happy lite-rock they were doing.
case in point one of the baddest, heaviest songs ever made:

In general I'm not really fond of Dispatch. Most of their stuff is cheesy hippie bro music. For some reason, I just like this song. It's got a solid groove. I can picture it being used in a skate video.

Never got into Fleetwood Mac. If I had to guess why people are into them, it'd be the "big band" complexity, inclusion of non-traditional rock and roll instruments, songwriting, etc. But I just can't relate. I'm not a big classic rock guy in general. I think I grew up with it on the radio too much where it felt too standard for me. The stuff that spoke to me more as I grew up and got into music have the louder, noiser, punk influence of stuff from the late 70s on. That's tangential but kind of related in that Fleetwood Mac just feels a little flat for me.
But I really like "Dreams." Like I said, they feel flat as a band to me, but for some reason the subtle backwards guitar fills and quiet bass line really grab me on this one.
I wanna see more explanations.

I've just never liked their overall song style and singing outside of this track. Of course, I've only heard a handful of songs by them over the years, but Everlong is the only one I have liked at all so I really don't feel the motivation to listen to a full album and see if they have any other bangers. They just sound too boring to me. Everything is just standard rock. The guitars aren't especially noisy or pretty, the singing isn't amazing or horrible, they don't play super fast or slow. They're just a straightforward rock band and it doesn't appeal to me. The only response I can think of when listening to them is "oh, there's four more minutes of this?" I did know an autistic guy who exclusively wore Foo Fighter shirts and that was pretty sick.

My Fleetwood track is The Chain, the story of them recording it separately because they were feuding adds some spice. But that fucking bass line around 4:00 gets me juiced. If it pops up on the shuffle I don't ever skip it,but most of their other stuff isn't my speed. I think I see a part edited to it (or was there one already? I can't recall)

they've got a huge catalog with a more things i'm not into than things i like but they definitely had some great tracks in their prime. i always liked this clip from right after stevie joined the band. the write up i saw was saying they were already a very popular band with the audience but know one knew who she was and then she came out and crushed it and after that the band wasn't really thought of as not being her band. i kind of like the idea of her being this early rock girl.

not a bad thing by Justin Timberlake. No song of his ever grabbed me but this is rad.
-
I've never really been impressed by Estelle. She has a nice voice and all, but her songs all sound so plain to me, especially compared to similar singers. I get bored listening to them. With that, Cee-Lo has a lot I don't care for as well.
This song though, man does it get me going. About ten years ago, I had a part time job working in the catalog department of a JC Penney. By that time, everyone was doing their ordering online, so nobody under the age of 80 came to the corner of the store where I was sequestered. It was a lot of monotonous busy work and excruciating boredom. My phone got no reception in that part of the building, I couldn't bring something to read, I got reprimanded for even doodling. It's hard for me to overstate just how boring this job was. The store had a playlist of insufferable top 40 "hits" that played on a loop, usually repeating 2 or 3 times during a shift. When this song came on though, I felt pure joy. It was like the feeling I would have when I finally got out of work, but only for four minutes. I can't put my finger on why, but I just found it so damn catchy and uplifting. I don't dance, but this song always makes me want to

Fucking yes!!! I put this on a mix tape in the late 90s and when my mates were like, "nice ironic use of that song" and I was like "ironic?" :-\
I pulled my MD player out the other day but alas it doesn't work anymore. Sux, cuz I reckon the MDs themselves could survive an atomic blast!!

I love the Beetles. Prolly a White stripes song i like enough and i dont like the whitestripes. Almost like "morning glory" by Oasis but thats a blatant copy of "the one i love" by REM. Oasis were unoriginal. Love some neil young songs. "Wanderin" is my fave. Edit Harvest moon too. Obviously then "Heart" and "oldman" but thats pretty much it, "down by the river" makes me want to throw my ears in the river.. I lke a couple of pixie songs. Chilli peppers with h slova7k playing guitar is rad. I usually dont like Sammy Hagar but i read some pretty funny excerpts from his fuck you tell-all book he put out. Funny shit about Ed being mega blitzed on meth. I got some joy from that Chicken foot super group too. "Mother" by Danzig. Halloween by misfits.

Grunge in general is depressing for me, even Nirvana. Not depressing in that I want to listen to it when I feel down but just avoid it altogether. But I like the tone of this song. It has some cool moments with the guitar riff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdF1Rqet9E8&index=12&list=PLE1179D279C08BE4A
This song is terribly cheesy. But it reminds me of the time after graduating college when I was free and still young and all I did was party with my friends. We were all single and the future was wide open. It was playing all the time, everywhere. It's a somewhat tolerable mix of dad rock and pop rock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Whgn_iE5uc
The Beatles. They have a lot of decent songs. But they are unbelievably overrated by the Baby Boomers who worship them. I don't consider them rock 'n' roll at all, except for the early days when they were covering actual rock 'n' roll songs. They were a pop rock band. The rhythm of this song is very cool though. It reminds me of Dusty Springfield.

i tried to come up with more stuff to write but i really cant think of much to more to say other than the eagles are really fucking boring, but this song has a solid groove.
Even if you don’t like the eagles you should read the book Don Felder put out. The stories they all had are wild and makes you appreciate what they did.
Felder literally strummed the guitar part for hotel california on the side of a cliff I believe.
-
The eagles are kind of a shit "flying burrito brothers". That being said they came alive when Joe Walsh joined the band. That live version of hotel cali or the eagles live version of rocky mountain way if you can find it.

Hey Jealousy is basically a Dinosaur song. Think of the vocals being sung in a J Mascis voice. Then imagine a more ripping guitar solo. It scans I tell ya.

When Really Sorry first came out, I was very closed minded about music but since I really liked Arto and his part, I let that song slide. I don't purposely listen to that band but if it's on, I won't make a fuzz since I'm nostalgic about Arto's part and that whole video. Johnny Marr is a pretty good guitarist and I can enjoy his guitar parts and songs outside anything to do with Morrisey. I know The Smiths/Morrisey have a following in Skateboarding but it's just not for me.

Grunge in general is depressing for me, even Nirvana. Not depressing in that I want to listen to it when I feel down but just avoid it altogether. But I like the tone of this song. It has some cool moments with the guitar riff.

This song is terribly cheesy. But it reminds me of the time after graduating college when I was free and still young and all I did was party with my friends. We were all single and the future was wide open. It was playing all the time, everywhere. It's a somewhat tolerable mix of dad rock and pop rock.

I'm biased since I love the Beatles but I have friends who arent' into them. That's fine. I do usually play this song for them since it's so good, most of my friends agree. It's a good song to introduce The Beatles since it's an excellent song in which the Lennon/McCartney collaboration is 100% since they're the only two members on the recording.
