Let me explain further. In an interview years ago, Quentin Tarantino said Owen Wilson is one of those actors he just doesn't like and wouldn't work with. BUT, he did love the movie Midnight in Paris and watches it frequently. So applying this to video parts, which skater do you not like but there's one video part of his that you enjoy.
Mine would be Chaz Ortiz, I typically don't enjoy any of his stuff but I like his Metropolis part and can re-watch it over again, even with the lame song. Those really long grinds/slides stand out.

"Wow"
Garrett Hill in Zero Promo. Might be the song.

Shane O'Neill - He has always come off stale and too "cookie-cutter" for me. But this part really stands out to me. The song, his first trick with Staba, and the filming/editing (VX) makes it one that I usually always come back to. Really enjoyable.

I know how slap feels about the Lutz but when this part came out we were all hyped on it.

Funny, because I also have a Chaz Ortiz part that comes to mind. I thought a lot of the lines were pretty interesting, the song was tasteful, and he skates some pretty rough spots. At least, more rough spots than you'd expect somebody who calls himself "Steez Ortiz" to skate.

Still one of my fav edits, moody but not too overdone. Not the biggest Bledsoe or Tom Yorke fan, but the combination is near perfect, in the sense that I can't imagine this part being any better than it is.

Never really liked little kid Torey, and not really a fan of long hair/red bull beanie Torey. This was basically right in between.

That's a good one! I forgot he was the one who skated to that song in Mind Field. Don't mind his part in Skate More either honestly. But I guess that was Mike Taylor...

I agree with most of the examples, the recent one that comes to my mind is Manchild on the flare.

my quentin tarantino would be sal rocco and my owen wilson would be mike carroll's goldfish. Let me explain further. sal rocco was rocco's crackhead brother who said nigger a lot and owen wilson is all class, just like mc.

id say that most of us would fall into that category, since no one in the industry wants to fuck with the majority of slappers.

i can't think of any true guilty pleasures. berra my dick is a kook to the max but i can separate and enjoy his skating (back when he skated). renaud was one of the worst humans i ever met, but again, i can separate his skating and enjoy it for what it was. even rickk kinda sucked haha but all his parts are great. current pops is super lame but i can't hate on his parts. i don't know, i never really liked shorty's steve olson but his tentacles part was light years ahead. ok that one.
-
iceman, what was wrong w/ rickk and steve olson personally?
-
Not a huge fan of Owen Wilson's acting either (although his Yeah Right! skit has always made me like him), but he's definitely put in more good performances than just MiP. Bottle Rocket (amongst a bunch of other Wes Anderson films) and Inherenent Vice are the first to come to mind. Maybe QT was referring to movies where he's the lead though?
Anyway, the first thing to come to mind is that Jimmy Carlin part edited to "Hey Sandy", although that's mostly cause he was skating to the Pete & Pete theme song. I'm sure I'll think of something better later.
-
iceman, what was wrong w/ rickk and steve olson personally?
never met steve but rickk was a bit of a dick to other skaters and random people for no reason. just cool guy shit. nothing extreme though.

First one that comes to mind is Sheckler in True. That video has some amazing but boring skateboarding from a team that I normally couldn't give two shits about, but Sheckler's part was great. His spot/trick selection is good and he does everything super solid.
P.S. fuck Pat Duffy that racist asshole. Check his twitter out if you haven't already. There's probably a reason no real shoe company will go near that dude.

definitely to some, but pretty much my whole generation from the northeast thought shorty's and osiris were the worst shit out. i'd go so far as to say that the alien/habitat thing was a reaction to it.
-
I'm going to get massive hate/kooks for this, but I've never really cared for Spanly. However, I really enjoy watching his Baker 3 part.

i thought ronson lamberts a time to shine was pretty good as a kid then i irl kooked myself by posting the lyrics to the song from the part on myspace and everyone thought i was talking shit bout weed

Get the fuck outta here. Olson was never on Osiris and was never part of that SD supertech scene. He was a hippie on his own trip who did a ton of shit that was ahead of his time because he wasn’t skating like anybody else. And shorty’s was the end of his career, most of his best stuff was on foundation. Everything you just said is a terrible justification of your dislike for Steve Olson.
And your claim that habitat alien was a reaction to something that existed as the same time as them? Come on man! That’s ridiculous

i wouldn't know if he was or wasn't on osiris, as i ignored that whole scene pretty hard (despite the fact i found myself in the mix with those dudes more than i liked). in fact, i didn't watch a shorty's vid until maybe 5 years ago, and i only watched like 2 parts...and i was in the background ha
dislike is rather strong, disinterest due to sloppiness and/or unappealing style is more like it. dude was incredibly talented, like mayhew, but i just couldn't enjoy their aesthetics
you're old enough to remember how sd footage dominated the dominant publication of the time (transworld). this had been going on long before the momentum built up to produce classic east coast videos such as photosynthesis. trash talk about sloppy overly tech cali dudes with bad style was a steady thing on the east coast throughout the 90's.

san diego was boring but steve olson was plopped there from parts unknown w/ only one reason. to attack and keep coming. not to ask but just to give. not to want but just to send. send the power of the warrior down everybody's throat.
get sick of san diego but you're not gonna get sick of steve olson. cause that freak of nature was jsut starting to swell. and when he gets big enough, brother, there ain't gonna be room for anyone else just steve olson and all the warriors floating through the veins and the power of the warriorrrrr.
TL,DR steve olson wasn't an SD skater even if he skated SD

OP, I was curious but can’t find any evidence of Quentin saying anything like that. A google search for “Quentin Tarantino Owen Wilson” just shows this thread and some stuff about Tarantino cameo in “she’s funny that way” which Wilson starred in. What gives?

I completely stopped paying attention to skate media for a few years then discovered Slap around the time I started going on the Thrasher site and buying the occasionally mag again. This was also around the time Torey Pudwill's Hallelujah part came out. I was so floored just by the shit he was landing I couldn't fathom why people on Slap would talk shit on all his crazy back lip combos among other things. I totally get it now.
Def other elements of that part I enjoyed though. Didn't know he was the one to kf front board the Hollywood 16. I mean obviously someone has by now. Didn't know it was him though.

This is exactly how I dressed in 2009, down to the A's hat.
This thread is good and deserves a bump. My pick is Spanly in Made 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9U5UzmK214
I didn't fuck with Baker when Baker 3 came out, but I learned to appreciate that video and team a few years later, except for Spanly, whose style I found gross. I didn't like his trick selection and thought he was distractingly short. I also remember thinking he was washed by the time Stay Gold came out, but that probably had something to do with my previous biases against him. But for whatever reason, I started to like him after his comeback and found this part enjoyable.
-
agreed. didn't really like his part in baker 3 or stay gold. his TIS part was cool at the time as he was so young and new on the scene, but doesn't hold up as well as some other parts in there. maybe it's partly the presentation but i really liked his MADE part

I can't really think of an example that still makes me feel this way today, but I do remember not being the biggest Mulder fan. This part changed my mind when the video came out but there wasn't any follow-up for him.

But now, in hindsight I appreciate everything he did a lot more, because, ya know, nostalgia.

Agree with both. Add in the fact its Alien using Dinosaur Jr makes it even better.

Its weird, Steve Olson would have flashes of sooooper clean style and a Noice trick selection...Then out of no where, he'd have soooper sloppy STyle and sketchy landings. Maybe its the hard tricks that made those landings sloppy???? He was after all, Doing some intergalactic tech shit. That's my theory
Henry Sanchez suffered from the same problem. Both were far ahead of their time with their Bag O' Tricks

Josh Matthews skating is generally boring to me but this part was pretty sick. This video in general was one of the best.
