My wife made our DJ play White Lines by Grand Master Flash and that was a huge hit.

My advice to you is to tell the DJ to NOT take request.
I worked really hard on my playlist just to have it ruined by my family requesting bullshit.
Also ban the cha cha slide.

That said
The Talking heads- this must be the place
De la soul- me myself and I
Egyptian lover is a good one as well.

they can take requests, but just tell them not to play them if they don't fit with the stuff you already picked. thats what we did. we also had a "DO NOT PLAY" list which was pretty much any new country bullshit, kid rock, reo speedwagon, john meloncamp and some other bullshit that we did not want to hear.

i think if you get a good dj and you let them know what kind of stuff you like, they'll keep it around that. requests are cool, but you just gotta let the dj know where you line is and not to cross it. you want your family and friends to have fun, so you have to play stuff they will dance to. i remember my brother telling me he was a little surprised that we didn't have more underground weird music and i had to tell him that it wasn't just a party for me, its a party for everyone.

also, that song "tequila" from peewee's big adventure gets everyone up. that one was a smash hit at my wedding.

When I got married... we stayed mostly with the 80s and that always gets the crowd moving.  It was fun as hell... nobody wants to hear anything after 1990.

We closed it out with ‘Time Of My Life’ from Dirty Dancing and it was a killer ender.  Do it!

My wife and I went heavy on the Bowie.

Wedding party walked out at the reception to "Young Americans." Got the dancing started with "Let's Dance" and closed the night with "Heroes."

Meat Loaf's "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" was a big hit, too.
