I'm sure I read in a newspaper last year about a pro rollerblader in the uk who died after tripping and hitting his head skating to the local shop on a hill near his house. I can't find the article and I know it's easy to make a 'haha stupid rollerblader' comment, but it's scary to think how one little mistake can fuck you just through bad luck.

Also, with the amount of times my head has come close to cracking the corner of a ledge, I'm surprised even 'safe' obstacles don't cause more damage than they do. Loop out on a landing wrong and the back of your head could be whipped straight into a pretty nasty piece of concrete.

i remember seeing that a while back. Too gnarly.
It's scary to think that even though a fall might not kill you, it can take you out of the game anyway because, mentally, you can't bring yourself to skate big stuff anymore.

where in denver is this rail located?

Head trauma doesn't necessarily cause death or impaired cognitive ability. If you hit the back of your head hard enough, the damage to the occipital lobe could cause blindness. Hitting the front of the head is what's going to make you "retarded."

Goddamn. First he snaps his wrist on a rail then two weeks slips out on another rail and ends up with a vagina on his face, and an even more fucked up wrist.

Neil Mims was supposed to be all messed up from that fall in a transworld video.

its on the feedback video, after that we basically dissapeared, he went from a top pro for world ind. at the time to a unknown skater for the actual kids

Yeah i'm pretty sure at least 3 people have died at the Louisville park, i know one was a bmx rider and another one was a kid just wasn't paying attention and stepped back into one of the deep bowls.

Their was a Neal Mims interview somewhere that he said after that slam he knew his career was over, he didn't have any long term problems from the fall he was just super afraid of handrails and big shit after that.

In all my years of skating I have never hit my head. Come close quite a few times but always take the fall onto my shoulder.

Does anyone remember that crappy Globe video Opinion. In the bonus ams section the first trick is this little kid. He tried a nollie heel or somthing but slipped out and whipped his head straight into the ground. You see the blood spurt out. Looked on youtube but couldn't find it

According to his interview in skatebook, he got scared of skating big shit, and turned to the bottle, became a complete pile alcoholic, and fell off. Now he is trying to come back. He had some pretty good shit in Right Foot Forward too.

Gives me even more respect for guys like Heath, Reynolds, Chief, Rowley, etc.- guys who can consistently skate huge stuff, take incredibly bad slams, and still have the balls to keep coming back and do amazing tricks on huge sets, gaps, rails, etc.

Its crazy how people who only know skateboarding, have it taken away, and their lives becomea complete mess, they have nothing to fall back on.
good to hear he's skating again.

Malcolm Gladwell recently wrote an excellent piece on concussions in the NFL and the long term effects.  It is well worth the read.
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/10/19/091019fa_fact_gladwell?currentPage=all

The nature of skateboarding lends itself to isolated impact; whereas an NFL lineman is going to hit his head on every play.  It is the repeated trauma that is the most likely cause for an increased probability of long term effects.  A helmet will distribute the impact, greatly reducing the risk of fracture, but the acceleration of the impact still affects the brain.  The idea that the lineman wear helmets is not nearly as significant as the repetition of the hits.

I do recall a Jamie Thomas interview where he said that there were times where he had to 'aim for the middle rail' because he had triple vision.  Does anyone remember if that was from head trauma or from stress?  Regardless, that is almost routine in the NFL.  I can't remember where I read this, but I recently found out a bit more about what really is going on when a coach asks an awoken player how many fingers he is holding up.  The coach isn't worried if you say "five" when he is holding only three fingers.  He gets worried if, when asked how many fingers he is holding up, you respond, "Strawberry".   After reading Gladwell's article, it made watching football harder.  Some of the hits these guys take are just disgusting.  Skateboarders take hard slams, no doubt about it.  Some of the ankle tweaks, credit cards, and head smacks can be near vomit inducing, but skateboarders have the benefit of free will.  We can walk away after that hit and come back another day.  These athletes are told to walk it off and get back in the game.  It's pretty dangerous.

I've actually had the "football is brutal because you want to hurt the other guy as much as possible, skateboarding isn't because you RISK, but want to avoid any injury, and can avoid situation where you think you might get hurt" discussion with my dad, who loves watching football, but thinks its irresponsible for skate videos to show people skating roof gaps and bombing hills.

After a bad slam, I usually get pretty drunk, and when I get drunk I get pretty retarded. Hope that clears anything up for anybody.

And there was a photo in some magazine of him skating a miniramp in his work uniform and with his sprayer. He's an exterminator, if I remember correctly.

Those mesh shorts were killer.
