^Flip still is questionably legit. Are you only talking about kids who started skating last week?

And why should they? One video part on a shitty company's video that went out of business and this dude is supposed to be written into the history books? Fuck that. Kid's don't need to know about anybody who ever kickflipped onto a handrail.
[close]

gipper, you need to leave your personal biases against rail skating aside, that part was really progressive when it came out and is still a good watch.
It was progressive when it came out. But it was one part. And it was editted very poorly. And the kid who made it blew himself out in about 6 months and was done. And his style was never that great. Really, his career doesn't speak to me as legend status.
Also, biases and opinions are inseperable. My opinions are based upon my biases. They are subjective.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”

I feel like my generation had it a lot easier than this one in many ways. When I was 19 I left home and wandered from city to city, just picking up jobs when I needed them. Seems there are so fewer opportunities now that kids seem a lot more fearful and afraid to leave home and just roam (the way HATE! was advocating above).

I'm not saying that's a reason not to do it, but it seems to me that kids today grew up under a heavier economic shadow than previous generations did, so I don't blame them, but it does kinda make me sad how cautious most of them seem to be.

However, I still stick to my previous claim that, generally, kids today are cool. And way better to skate with than the old fucks my age.

I do think it's important for kids to know their skate history. Like, it would be fucked if a kid hated on Rodney Mullen, then went out and played S.K.A.T.E. with his buddies - oblivious to the fact that Rodney INVENTED ALL of those tricks, busted his ass for them, got clowned for it, etc. And this all happened by 1981.

Or thinking that Natas is some old, outdated tool - even though he (and The Gonz) pretty much set off rail skating. You can't love all these new jack rail skaters and not love Natas. Because if there was no Natas to kickstart the shit, those guys wouldn't be around. It might have happened eventually, but not the way it did. And skating would not be as we know it today.

And don't even get me started on The Gonz. I've seen kids clown him on these very boards, and it's pretty much regular.

Kids don't know what being raw is these days.

Sorry to let you down, but Antwuan and the rest of the Baker/Deathwish dudes are just glorified party dudes with face/neck tats.  Getting arrested isn't raw, getting arrested is just shit that can happen.

Raw is Sean Young PUSHING down an SF hill in the fucking rain.

Raw is Sean Sheffey knocking out University of Maryland frat dudes at the age of fucking 15.

Raw is the Conklin brothers and Bo Turner getting lit and just fucking people up.

Raw is being afraid to actually skate a spot due to the locs.  You have no idea what I am talking about unless you went to EMB or Burnside in the 90s.  I thought I was going to get robbed or stabbed within 5 minutes of being at both places, and I actually knew to shut the fuck up.

RAW IS ANDY ROY.

This all being said, kids also don't know what the fuck it is to be a man anymore.  Seriously, put down the fucking video game controller, pack a fucking backpack, and leave.  Skate.  Struggle.  Get drunk.  Rage.  Don't know where you will sleep that night.  Fight.  Fuck.  Be a reckless, misled youth.

I promise you that you won't regret it.  I look back to 1994-2003 (age 14-23) as being some of the best parts of my life because I was doing at least one or all of those things, either by chance or by choice.  Now I am 30 and I still leave the state at least once a month because of what the feeling of adventure has done for me.

there are still people that are raw as hell, they just don't blog every fucking detail for public consumption.  if you've got felonies, plural, or you're really doing some shady shit you don't broadcast that shit to the world and turn it into a marketing device, thats just asking for trouble, save the stories for the bitches.

I think you misunderstood.  I am well aware that there are people still out there, kids just have a different definition of it these days.  They think that the Deathwish dudes are as raw as it gets.  If your mother gets her photo taken with the pro at the demo, he's not too sketchy of a dude.  And you are right, a lot of these dudes aren't blogging or whatever, but then again, every dude I listed, I knew about long before the net existed.  Most of this happened when skating got more acceptance anyways.  Which is something else kids don't know about as much these days-- getting made fun of and beat up for skating.

And THANK YOU for posting that friendly dave.  One of my favorite skaters, and one of my favorite videos of him.  Guns, motorcycles, a fucking super tight halfpipe....  Love that dude.

i dont get it, so you want to see kids be raw but all you guys back all this lame pretty boy shit, make up your mind. and I think you're too quick to judge every person that started skating in the 2000s like we all lack some special insight older people have exclusively, its that kind of lame attitude that pisses me off.

kids don't know about fighting to skate these days.  i remember having to rumble just to skate.
the kids today act all gangsta until they have to throw down, then their cocks shrivel up into little vaginas.
kids are total pussies these days, what worse is that they don't even have each others backs.

I remember walking into the lunchroom and seeing a kid with one torn up shoe and knowing that I had someone to eat lunch with.

haha for sure!  skaters were so few and far between back then that if you met one, you'd automatically become best friends.  you'd call each other every day to skate no matter what was going on, and it didn't matter if you lived mad far away, you'd pretty much travel any distance just to skate with someone else.

kids really don't know about the camaraderie that existed between skaters back in those days.

"all you guys" being the people posting 4 pages worth of complaints about what people don't know.

backing "lame pretty boy shit" as in people who think its justifiable that people pursue modeling careers and silly shit, which isnt raw, and then also make a complaint that people arent raw. i just assumed you backed that type of stuff.

also, you sort of are passing judgement on people who started skating around then by replying in this thread, i would definitely say im a kid compared to dudes who've been skating for more than 10 years, have adult responsibilities and have real bills to pay.

I know I didnt experience skating the way you did but you're not experiencing skating the way I am either.

and that was my point, every generation has people who bitch about the generation after it, Im sure there were people who were the same way to lenny kirk and said he wasnt as raw as the generation before him.

and to faster, first, youre talking about a completely different era of the city of new york, new york just isnt like that anymore, but shit still happens and dont generalize everyone, there are plenty of dudes that have each others backs, not everyone is like that.

my opinions on skateboarding and life are based on my personal life experiences.
i don't know if you noticed this, but i tend to generalize when voicing my opinions.  don't take it to heart.

So true.  I remember when if you saw a dude at the store, mall, movies, etc. with Vans or Airwalks you 100% knew they skated and pretty much were required to talk to them.  Looking back, I hung out with some complete pieces of shit strictly because they skateboarded, but also met some lifelong friends I never would have met if we both didn't.

Also- kids don't know about skaters being complete outcasts.  My dad literally sat me down when I was 15 and told me he was embarrassed I was a skateboarder.  I just heard an NFL "Play 60" commercial that encourages kids to exercise and the second or third activity Drew Breeze suggests is to "go skateboarding."

i remember seeing him for the first time kickflipping into a raw 5-0 on some tall-looking handrail in a 411 and all of my friends were stoked on it (kinda like stanton's nollie noseblunt) and it was sort of like "did you see that?"
"fuck that was rad"
"awww shit i can't believe it"
and it was a little surreal
for a couple of years there videos really really mattered

That is beyond true.  I'm only 23, but that is dead on accurate about how I grew up.  I transferred right before my freshman year of high school started, so I went into the new school not knowing anyone.  I was looking for the one tore up shoe all day that first day.  I really miss the days when you could spot a skater out of a crowd of people and you'd instantly have each other's back.

Definitely like this one. I'm sure its still like that in many places.
At one point, the shoe didn't even have to be ripped, you just had to have shoes like airwalks or etnies and it was obvious you skated. Same with skate shirts.

he is not a role model. he's not paid to be a role model. he's paid to wreak havoc on his skateboard. parents should be role models. just because he rides a skateboard doesn't mean he should raise your kids.

kids don't know about the gonz these days.  it's fucking ridiculous.  at the shop, there was the new adidas video on, and kids were saying how they don't understand why he's such a big deal, he sucks.  not even little kids, dudes were high-school age.  it sort of shocked me.

part 2:

kids don't know about style these days.  they see a dude who tweaks his back foot on ollies and lands clean, they think that's style.  that's not style.  style is having something other people don't.  jason lee, stranger, cardiel, gonz, holmes, hensley.

I admit, Im a kid and i just dont get it. please explain, im willing to read and think about it

"SKATE OR DIE FAGGOTS" being yelled at you and then having to run for your life

being stoked to skate shitty ramps in rough ass parking lot

being stoked to meet any other skater because there are so few of them around

but kids also don't know about carving a bowl and never hitting coping

what it's like to be over learning new tricks

what it's like to be frustrated about not getting as stoked as they used to on skating

(i don't know about this shit either, but i see a lot of old guys that do... two sides to every coin)

It's nothing, just the"back in my day" rhetoric that these fags always spit. If you just started skating you probably wouldn't like most of those dudes because you're already used to seeing people with good style. Majority of the names he posted were dudes that were extremely gross.

There's good style, and there's good form. Cardiel has style, P rod has form. Where people get it wrong is when they think one is better than the other, or that they can even be compared.

Kids don't know these days that late 20s doesn't make you one of those Slap old farts.

Kids these days care too much about skate fashion.  They act like teenage girls.  Just skate.

Kids these days think Bam used to be legit but sold out, when the Slap old farts remember not even knowing who the fuck Bam was.

Kids these days don't remember how seriously annoying rollerbladers were in the mid '90s.

Kids these days buy new shoes when they're torn because they can fuckin' afford 'em instead of just duck-taping that shit up and getting made fun of by the jocks.

Kids these days buy wax at the shop.

......and on.

Love the Gippers video game comment.  Fuck, I forgot about those games.
