A single change to your kit could save a lot of waste...
« on: June 13, 2018, 06:22:13 AM »
...and completely reshape the industry.
One product causes more grief and waste than all others, and that’s...

Grip tape

Imagine for a second that instead of the sticky sandpaper we use now, we used a thin sheet of smooth (or textured) rubber, that gave the same amount of grip, yet was easy to clean, and could use when wet.

Years ago I read about such a product, but it was allegedly drummed out by the shoe companies, who depend on people wearing thru shoes quickly.

In this age where more and more skaters are giving a shit about the environment, if this ever made a comeback, it could change how shoes are designed, the materials used (no longer need super-durable environmentally unfriendly uppers), and how many shoes are kept out of landfills.

All we need is a company willing to take that risk.

Wasn't it called Duck Grip or something? I think Lavar rode it.

this happened in the 90s.
i used to skate with a guy who wouldn't put grip onto the board, but would spray hairspray on the top sheet every couple of mins.

We've been thinking about this with couple of my friends..

Maybe planning on doing something with spray cans or something similar for application..

It can be done basically in every color too..

Has anyone here tried DKL grip? Every time I think of ordering a sheet, the thought of youtubers vlogging about it makes me stop.

There's also this sort of stapled rubber mat that Gosha used for that crazy Russian winter part that was on Thrasher not too long ago:

Lucky for you we live in a free market society, if the product works it will succeed, if it doesnt it will not. fucking up your shoes looks cool. People have been talking about alternatives to wooden skateboards for 20 years also, yet we keep chopping down trees. Honestly offer this as an idea without mentioning the environment and it will sound better

Agreed, if the product worked well it would succeed.  The DKL grip i've been sent before and tried.  It sucked.  End of story.

I think a big way skating could reduce waste is if everybody wore pants with the inseam a few sizes too small. Plus everybody would look fuckin rad.

Ze Germans already have it: http://www.sys-grip.com/

Now if they'd only figure out that it's not performance that sells the product they might have a chance in the market.

That's not how that shit works at all. Consumers aren't rational and don't buy the "best" products on the market. People buy low end Mercedes when they could spend less for a much better car from Honda or Toyota. This is why marketing is so important.
I know people who make decks that last 3x longer than the decks you get in the skateshop just by using more glue, a manual press, and letting them cure longer. This is far less profitable though which is why this type of manufacturing is niche.

I just got three sheets of DKL grip in the mail to split with a homie, but don't have a board to put it on yet. I'll report back with my findings eventually.
