Things you do to motivate yourself to land a trick.
« on: June 15, 2018, 05:04:00 PM »
Today I started to skate again after an injury and couldn't jump a 3 stairs that I usually get first try. To motivate myself for this trick and any trick I try, I keep saying random shit like "If I land this, I'll bang that girl i used to like in Highschool" or "I'll get whatever amount of XP." Do you do any weird thing to land tricks?

I’ve deprived myself of water many times. No water until you get this. It doesn’t always work

I bang my face against a door or the concrete to teach myself a lesson but what's sad is I still don't land anything and then I go back to slamming my face into the floor.

i was trying to skate the rail at the Wedge in 1999. i kept riding up and not ollieing. i told myself 'you'll like yourself better if you try it' and  i ollied up, toes hit the ledge behind the rail and i fell to the ground and hit my head.
but i was right, i liked myself better than if i just rode at it and made moose noises.
the 'zero handshake' is another one. based on an interview w/ jamie m thomas, you shake hands as a promise to your friend to commit to the next attempt.

When I'm in a slump, I comfort myself by saying if I believe in dinosaurs, then somewhere, they must be believing in me. And if they believe in me, then I can believe in me. Then I bust out.
You know I thought these forums were a for skating not discussing fetishes

Not to make light of the situation, but that reminded me of Kareem's mid-line pager check.

I try to think of worst case scenarios (never really that bad given my limited abilities lol) and per law of attraction it does happen once in a while lol. Slamming like this helps me get past the initial apprehension like Beta said.

As someone said earlier, depriving myself of water or other necessities.
Telling myself “just fucking land it, you idiot” after trying whatever I’m doing for over an hour.

Back when I smoked cigarettes, I would make bets with people or tell someone to take my smokes from me if I didn’t land it.

Sometimes when I really get in a zone and just keep circling back with like a five second break in between tries I have to force myself to sit down for five minutes or so and drink a little water and really think about the trick. Usually get it in the next five tries. I once was trying a Manny trick just circling back non stop for like an hour and a half, I didn't even realize the temperature had dipped into the forties and with my sweating I had gotten a fuckin severe chill going plus I was cramping up once I finally gave up. Took two hours to stop shivering and like a half hour before I could feel my hands again. Now I take breaks to assess the situation.

Anybody else ever had your sweat freeze in your hair? It's pretty rad
I was standing staring at the world, and I still can't see it

A camera always helps, when you don’t want to waste the filmers time you just bang out the trick real quick.

Yeah ive done that one a handful of times. I usually realize that if i just took a small sip i would have landed the trick earlier.

I feel lame saying this, but if theres something I wanted to buy for myself, if its a trick I haven't done but have wanted to do, I make a deal with myself that if I land it, I'll go and get whatever that thing I was wanting is. usually its like a shirt or something. Honestly it has worked almost every time.

Spot an opening in foot traffic that means i have to go right then or wait awhile for people/to pass. Helps me turn the brain off by redirecting my attention

For me it is all about flogging.  If I don't succeed, I FLOG. Flog till my back bleeds. Taking a shower is terrible post flog.  But I must.  I must shower, in order to cure the ringworm.

Focus on how rad it will feel to land the trick instead of how frustrating it is to fuck it up.
The BA thing: just visualize how it would feel to do it and go at it like I’ve done it before.
Break up my attempts at the trick by doing easier tricks or doing the trick on something easier just to not get into a mode where I’m used to bailing. Like, if I’m trying to kickflip a gap, I’ll do a few flatground kickflips or ollie the gap, or if I’m trying a tough ledge trick, I’ll break up the tries with a 5050 or a nose slide or something. Keeps the spirits up, keeps you feeling good about doing what you are doing. Spending hours upon hours trying and failing on the same trick can be spirit crushing.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
