people wore windbreaker pants.
we'd get drunk and drive all night to philly to skate LOVE PARK.
not a ton of skate stoppers everywhere. skating was still vilified but there was interspersed 'do a 900' b/w 'skate or die dude' and 'skater fags'.
our pants weren't as big as they used to be but hadn't gotten dick tight yet [except ed templetits].
pj was percolating w/ ryan gallant but not out in the world's eye yet.
marc johnson no longer wore white shirts and dickey's, he'd become a billboard [for the A team].
gershon continued to sweat through pants, regs and switch.

I was only 10 years old, just getting introduced to skating. I have nothing to contribute.

del was in between mr dobalina and deltron zero in the yr 3000.
souls of mischief called up bridget, her man's a midget.
popps and wenning had everyone doing straight on bs nosegrinds.
kids from holden [yuppie suburb] all became greco clones overnight.
penny was mia but the muska went from an underground cult phenomenom to bloated rockstar. he still grinded double kinks.
danny montoya quietly killed it.
rob G punched out one of bam margerine's entourage.
paulo diaz and guy mariano were mia [high on crack st].
lennie kirk tried to rob the weedman at pier 7 but ended up robbing liquor store/taxi instead.
he was like jules from pulp fiction.

Go lurk youtube..Kirk Dianda did some videos that will help.  WATCH any of the ON videos to see what's relevant at that time. I know they say 2001 but most videos were filmed a year or two before the release date.

Fulfill The Dream by Shorty's heavily influenced baggy blue jeans with tight black shirts and fitted hats.

Public skateparks were full of booze and weed, not heroin and meth

CKY was kind of cool

My friend Andy thought dressing like Jim Greco would make him better at skating but it was a dirty lie.

The kid from you local park who ripped at skating also ripped at biking, scootering and soccer but was publicly shamed for riding anything with two wheels.

Most importantly.... Skate Street in Ventura was still alive. Can't remember if it was the revamp or the original.

I was 12 so that's my recollection.

My memory is fucked so entirely possible my timeline is off but I’m getting visions of

Axions or Circas with weed pockets, Shortys and Muska, using deodorant to wax picnic tables, flameboy and wet willy, Tony Hawk with a bull-fighting cape on, Reynolds drinking with orangutans, classic Transworld videos, ordering from CCS magazine, mailing dollars in envelopes for stickers, CKY Baker and Piss Drunx corrupting my young mind, getting 411VM VHS in the mail

A big difference between then and now is that we weren’t all so connected, so what we my and my lil homies were watching, how we were dressing and what pros we were obsessed with may be totally different than what was going on with other skaters. The internet didn’t matter nearly as much to skating. We read transworld and bought videos from the skate shop but other than that we were our own little bubble.

Shitty prefab concrete skateparks began popping up all over New England. Some have been improved by fundraisers, others bondo'd yearly by the locals, while the rest have gone to complete shit  from neglect or bad tracts of asphalt that doomed them from the start.

World industry was still hip in the twelve and under crowd.

Element was pre-Bam and had yet to blow up.

CCS still sent out these little fifty page brochures for free, was hella rad.

Blank decks and shop boards had not begun to eat away at the industry's profits.

Kerry getz was getting PAID.

You couldn't swing your dick without hitting a Tony hawk ad for this or that.

8.5 boards were as rare as 7.5's are today.

Mike Carroll was in his prime. Koston could do no wrong. Biebel was about to explode.
I was standing staring at the world, and I still can't see it

I had a pair of the muskas with the tongue weed pocket but I was so innocent that I thought they were just where you could put your house key so you wouldn’t land and bruise your hip if they were in your pocket.

I only found out about the weed connection a few years ago. :D

Alien Workshop - Photosynthesis came out and if you were a teenager on the east coast you were in utter awe of Brain Wenning and Anthony Pappalardo.

Athletic footwear was not a part of skateboard culture.

Skateboarding was (still is to an extent) heavily regionalized. Like a poster above said, the internet was in relative infancy and average skaters were not really connected with one another like they are now.

Rail chomping was in its prime. Most of the biggest pros were doing some gnarly shit down some huge stairs.

Tom Penny started to poke his head around after a hiatus.

Print magazines were extremely important and one of the only ways one could know what was going on in the industry.

Edit: John Cardiel was still able to skate at peak ability. This is genuinely important, he is a once in a generation type skater.

there were no cellphones.
the cellphones that existed weren't computers, just phones. but nobody had them.
there was no youtube.
chicago had a higher murder rate but nobody called it Chiraq.

If you were a full grown man you'd wear the same pants as a 15 year old girl.  Baker, Toy Machine, Zero, and Girl/Choc were the hot shit.

you could tape over your trick if you rewinded.
you could degrade the footage by taping over bails.
you could watch the trick on a little window of the camera but otherwise, wait til the video comes out.

word of mouth. spots had colloquial names like 'gagne ledge' and apocraphyl tales of gnar gone down. 'jay's gap' in olympia washington, according to folklore had been nollie bigspin flipped by 'jay'.
steve olson had 360 flipped of the maze gap at the capitol and so on.
no video library to confirm or deny.
elissa steamer and jaime reyes were the only girl street rippers.

lots of groundbreaking videos came out those days, some of which i only got around watching years later after shit went youtube and stuff.

like misled youth released 99 and was pretty big in 2000 still, because there wasn't so many videos. workshops photosynthesis, tws modus operandi and i.e., baker2g come to mind. also the first static came out in 2000, but i didn't watch that until late 00s i think.

everyone was sad tim brauch passed the year before.
