Awful backpack rap in Skate videos.

Aesthetics was coming up.

Alphanumeric gear was all the rage.

Big puffy DC’s and running from under covers and bike cops at Love.

Axion released Guy’s second shoe the Aries.

A-Team was cool for some reason.

World officially fell off.

Deca took World’s place.

No one wore Vans.

Osiris was cool for some reason.

I graduated high school and the jocks always asked me why I skated.

No one wore Thrasher shirts (not even skaters).

Strength Magazine

7.4 Alien Workshop decks.

Deluxe was in an awkward phase.

Skaters were upset about DC’s being sold in PAC Sun and Fred Durst wearing them.

Modus Operandi came out.

Lakai was coming up.

Adidas had Gonz, Jahmal, Paulo, Matt Beach, and Quim.

Nike stopped making those hideous Skate shoes that they sold in Eastbay.

Tony hawk ushered skateboarding into the mainstream by landing the 900 on national tv and then appearing on the cover of THPS video also doing the 900. in every suburb in America skaters had "do a 900" shouted at them by jocks hanging out the window of their dads muscle car.

The Geoff Rowley Vans shoe came out and sparked the vulcanized shoe craze, and the throw back shoe craze which ultimately showed Vans the way to recover from bad shoe obscurity. The "Off The Wall" tag reappeared on the back of their shoes. In an attempt to be old school everybody, mostly non skaters, wanted the shoe with the wavy stripe ironically called "old skool"

The Tilt Mode Army made skateboarding fun again, which at the same time revealed how not fun the A-Team was. Enjoi Skateboards came a few years later as a dwindle brand and sold red jeans with a panda head embroidered on the back pocket.

There was no public skate parks so Vans installed skateparks at Malls and charged $14 to skate for 2 hours.

in 2000, every skate mag you flipped through would have at least one, and sometimes multiple, backpack ads. and ccs could have just called itself backpack warehouse. not sure why this stopped being a thing. clive was sick!

Eric Koston was a god and frequently changing what we thought was possible on ledges, rails, and gaps.

Everyone wanted to be on one of Alien, Girl/Chocolate, Flip or Zero.

VHS is colored tapes were popular.

People were leaving Toy Machine like it was a sinking boat.

-Mumford was killing the rail game, Ryan Johnson too.
-They had skatepark lists in magazines, that was how much there were in the US where it took a couple pages to list em.
-Everything was extreme.
-Noticed more than just skaters were wearing skate shoes, girls an jocks would rock em too.
-Hubbas weren't put on the endangered list yet.
-Unless your name was Ray Barbee or that man am Mike R(not gonna attempt to spell his name) guy who was sponsored by Foundation nobody filmed a no comply.
-Can't remember any slappy'n of the curb tricks in videos.
-Ellington was the only person taking the back big spin to new levels... Templeton and Rowley were the only people I can remember doing impossibles at the time too.
-Hot ams were Colt Cannon, Machnau, Janoski, Rob Mckinnley, TX, Trainwreck, TimTim, Biebel, Joel Meinholz, Shimizu, Baptista, Wenning, D Gar, Apples, Daxter Lussier, Eric Bork, and Jake Nunn according to TWS at the time.
-Only tricks done down Hollywood 16 stairs were Ollies, a frontside, and a kickflip.
-A-Team was around but by the end of the year it kinda morphed into Enjoi.
-Skateboard sites were in their infancy.
This was also around the time I started to notice more people skating in my area(probably due to THPS). It would just be me and 5 guys for a few years but that last year of high school was when there was an influx of younger skaters all of a sudden... That's all I got now.

In the year 2000, Circa and DC were killing it.

Gino, Tom Penny, and Guy were seldom seen. Jason Lee was gone, Hosoi was in jail. They were touted as style gods and their elusiveness only contributed more to their legend and appeal.

Thrasher wasn't that polished layout-wise, and there were ridiculously bad ads being run in the back pages. Bad ads in every mag really. The army ads that Kolostrum mentioned were brutal.

Either Muska or Jamie Thomas was your favourite skater. And Shorty's was pretty much the top-selling brand.

Pros and ams who ripped but didn't have a shoe sponsor basically wore Koston 1's all the time.

Gino hadn't really gone full ghost. He was coming off an amazing but short part in Chocolate tour. Penny was nowhere to be seen leading to him having old footage re-used in Menikmati.

Most of the boards on the wall at my local shop were Blind and World Industries.

The only skatepark near me was like 10% skateboarders, 10% rollerbladers, and 80% stoner kids.

Scooters were essentially non-existent.

Gravity Games.

Thrasher Comix was my favorite section of the mag.

Element featherlite decks (7.75 is considered wide)
Mesh singlets over t-shirts
Rowley was just about to bless us with his first shoe
Meanwhile I was rocking Mike V's Etnies space boot
Clothes were just on the cusp of going tight

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

Over the pond here in Europe, Cliche was quite fresh to the game and had just released their first video "Europa"

Blueprint also just released their amazing video "Waiting for the World" which really put them on the map as a team.

I think Don Nguyen ollied El Toro for the first time, although that could have been 2001?

The Blind Reaper was everywhere in skate shops as was Flame Boy and Wet Willy (RIP World Industries message boards)

Skate backpacks were actually amazing, especially the Clive ones as mentioned above. Wish they were still around.

Clothes were definitely still baggy over here and everyone had those belts that are now coming back in to rotation.

Pretty sure Savier started up in 2000 as well!

There was defenitely two of them in 2000.  I don't think a year has went by without Steve Olson og getting some ink in the 'trash' section of the now comepletely lame Thrasher.

Street skating was still actually done in the steets, not in a skatepark format/area. The Berrics didn’t exist. Skateboarding was not cool to do, there was also little money in being pro. Nike, Cons, Adidas had nothing to do with us. Stevie Williams

All three, plus Reebok had teams and shoes out at that point.

Nike had Choppy Omega and Bam prior to 2000.

Converse had Jerry Fowler, Kenny, Felix, Chany, and
Supa

Adidas had Gonz, Quim, Paulo, Jahmal Williams, and Matt Beach

Reebok had Boks with Neal Hendrix

Big Brother Magazine, Slap Magazine and Skateboarder Magazine still existed.

The most important contests were the World Cup of Skateboarding in Münster Germany, Slam City Jam and Tampa am and pro. Those contests were actually featured in skateboard magazines.

Barcelona became the world's most popular city for street skating.

Stevie Williams could switch tre higher than most pros could ollie.

Speaking of Stevie, he and Koston came out with shoes that looked like basketball shoes, but skated surprisingly well.

Big Brother was my gateway to the world outside of the 'burbs.
