Boogie Nights is #1 for me

Synecdoche, New York

I'm trying to limit this list to one movie per director(s), so either Raising Arizona or Fargo...probably Fargo though, I love that movie

Feel kinda lame admitting this cause Tim Burton has fallen off so hard since then, but Beetlejuice is definitely in my top 5. Love the two Batman movies he did too.

Definitely some Terrence Malick movie....probably Thin Red Line but Badlands & Days of Heaven are amazing too

Dead Ringers by Cronenberg is a big favorite of mine too

99% of directors fall off.   Nothing wrong with loving some Tim Burton stuff.  Malick def has been on a quantity over quality run in the 21st C.    Beetlejuice 2 is a thing that is happening though just to warn you

The Matrix and The Thing are definitely in my top 5, but I can't figure out the other three.

I'm struggling with a fourth and fifth at the moment, but I gotta add Dredd:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkSLFeAjnrk

Dredd's been my absolute favorite comic character and universe since the mid 80's... I remember being so angry at the Stallone one that came out in '95. The new one was fuckin perfect, whether you're a fan of the books or not. Sucks that there won't be a sequel, but it's rewatchable as hell.

I also really, really love the movie "John Dies at the End," but I'm not sure if it's in my top 5. It's close if it's not though.

Just gave it a rewatch and def dig it.   Sequel is tough bc director was fired or severely creatively limited to the point it might have technically been Alex Garland’s first directorial job.

I know there’s been efforts at getting a Mega City One show off the ground

...yeah, I've been following 2000 AD on Twitter... if they can make something half as good, I'd be stoked!

Have you ever seen Dark City, the 90s film?  Feel like you might enjoy it

I never saw "Dredd" but the premise seems very similar to "The Raid: Redemption", no?

Like, cops making their way up through a criminal run building?

Yeah but wasn’t that also Game of Death.?   In fairness, it’s more that cops are locked in a building trying to get a witness out, and it’s just a premise that can be worked on a shoestring budget.

It is. It often gets called a rip-off but I think it turns out Dredd was written before the raid. Just one of those Dante's peak/volcano things where two similar movies just happen to get made at the same time.

I see, they were released only within a year of each other. Got it. Thanks. I really enjoyed "The Raid: Redemption." Probably my favorite movie of 2011, saw it multiple times in theater. I don't think I've watched "Game of Death".

Bruce Lee final pic.  I think it’s the one he has to fight different levels to get up to the boss on the top and one of those levels is Kareem Abdul Jabbar

He died halfway through filming, so they finished it with a double.   It’s where his iconic all yellow jump suit comes from

Oh for sure, it's fantastic... arguably the Matrix aesthetic before the Matrix!

I have watched John Dies at the End numerous times. It holds up.

Thanks for reminding me about Dredd. I would love an animated Dredd movie to come out.

I was surprised how much the Matrix clothing aesthetic was influenced by Blade.   Makes sense in retrospect that they wanted Will Smith to be Neo bc of Snipes

It’s hard to recommend something to someone who like Kevin Smith, Kubrick, and Robert Rodriguez.   That’s a Venn Diagram that’s kinda just 3 circles, but I’d imagine Quentin Tarantino fills in between RR and KS bc Kevin Smith was kinda doing the low ambition Tarantino thing for a bit

Good read, but maybe they might skew more Reservoir Dogs than PF

The threat is good.

I agree that platoon is whatever that guy's name is that I forgotten. He was great in that. Also adiego for strings is my absolute favorite song ever written.
