Played-Out Graphics Motifs?
« on: July 09, 2018, 08:08:21 AM »
was recently thinking about that new dwindle catalog (if i had a nickel for every time i heard that...) that got posted here a couple days ago. i knew that enjoi loteria series reminded me of something, just not this many things...

chocolate:

so are we cool with the reiteration of the loteria motif, where x team rider represents y loteria card? does each company put enough of its own spin on it that it keeps it fresh? or since chocolate was the first to do it (i think?), are the other companies whack for trying to run it back?

are there other graphics motifs out there that you feel get used too much?

(btw, check out this dude trying to sell the complete series of chocolate loteria stickers for 500 canadian?! deal or no deal? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chocolate-Skateboards-Loteria-Stickers-Complete-Set/202353674736?hash=item2f1d3809f0)

There are definitely more played out motifs than this. Board graphics overall have been on the same shit for years. I'm sick of cartoons in general on boards. But even the new small companies have been generic. If it's not a cartoon, it's a random portrait or an off-center picture of flowers/sculpture.

There’s a bunch of boring shit that gets recycled every season:

Any and all girl and chocolate graphics
Non-skate Brand logo rips with the riders name
Sports jerseys and logos
City skylines
Image collages (really hot right now)
Weed & Alcohol
Checkerboard backgrounds
Enjoi graphics
Stenciled letters
Reusing graphics or logos designed before 1995
Food related graphics
Animal prints
LV and Gucci rip off graphics
Pigeons or any birds, bird skulls included

I know you guys are going to think I'm kidding here, but I'm not: skateboarding needs more nude chick graphics.

Anyone know where I can get classic Evan Hecox chocolate series decks? Moving into a new apartment and want to use one of his older series for wall art.

Finally old enough to have some fuck-you money to buy things.

facebook skateboard collector groups. too much activity for anyone mentally sane to handle if you keep notifications on, but a lot of Hecox decks, including full series decks will pop up there

definitely this one, but it's become such a part of skateboarding graphics' history at this point that i almost can't be mad at it anymore as played-out. it's like the "will-they, won't they" relationship that it seems like every sitcom has - for awhile it may have seemed tiresome, but now it's become such a part of the art form that i've come to expect it and am kind of comforted by it. the loteria thing is just so specific that it bugs me when i see it used again and again.

Pat Duffy Plan B was the first. They took dead stock boards and had the scratchy print over them to get rid of the boards but also had some "winning" boards printed. The non winning boards were other team riders graphics from prior releases. I can't remember what you won but it was a great way to get rid of boards with older graphics.

Pretty sure Baker had a scratch ticket Ellington.

I actually like the concept and don't think it's played out at all. If anything I want more companies to do it. I want a chance to win stuff just for buying something I was already going to buy.

the loteria call out is apt. "cartoon" is just what illustration is that's ALWAYS been the thing can go anywhere from pushead to anime and doesn't mean shit.

the Tumblr photo collage color blocking thing that was tired before quasi built their brand on it and just plain desperate when numbers turned itself into the stick beating the deceased stallion is #1 rn.

welcome graphics suck but at least they're consistent in a way vcj's stuff was just before they got cliver.

Didn't see Bands/music on the long list, which surprises me. Literally hundreds of band graffics for most board companies. Also send like 80-90% are black dropped and like very similar.

The trend of people putting stickers all over their board when I’m watching street league.  Why do they do that??
