Camping east of SF/Sacramento
« on: July 31, 2018, 11:10:47 AM »
Making a trip to the lower 48 to visit friends in California at the end of the month, convening in SF. We’re solid on skating recommendations, but second half of the trip we’re looking to get out to the Tahoe/El Dorado/Stanislaus area for either some car camping or backpacking. Also looking to do some river floating

First time out there so I’m wholly unfamiliar, and my friends haven’t lived there long enough to get a lay of the land. Any recommendations, or just areas we should avoid entirely? Areas with less foot traffic would be ideal, and I wouldn’t mind incorporating some fishing into the trip as well. Thanks in advance.

End of the month like today July or end of the month August? Either way, download the app called Air Visual and use that to choose what area of the Sierra Nevada's has cleaner air. Lots of fires burning right now.

If you want a rad experience, camp out at Buckeye Hot Springs. Theres free camping across the river from the actual springs. There are hot springs above the river, and some right next to it. Travertine hot springs are close by as well. If that's too far south, there is a pay campground / hot springs at Grover Hot Springs state park.

As for Tahoe, there are a ton of pay for camp sites all around the lake. You can also just head off any National Forest road and find free camping. Much easier done on the south side of the Lake.

End of the month August through Labor Day weekend. Will definitely download that app; knew there was likely going to be issues with forest fires but it was pretty unclear online what areas were/will be affected.

Thanks for the recommendations. Hot springs would be tight. Any insight on what the temps get down to at night up there around that time of year?

Those should give you an idea of what's burning where. Then go to the forest or park site, and it will show you where camp and road closures are.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

I'd seriously recommend camping on the yuba, you could either find something closer to auburn/grass valley which will be really hot (100+) which makes the swimming better, or closer to tahoe which is more reasonable (mid 80s to 90s) but the water is colder, being snow melt.
