MINDING THE GAP - HULU DOCUMENTARY FILM 8/17
« on: August 02, 2018, 07:56:06 AM »
Just found this on the AV Club:

Skate videos sit at a weird intersection of music video, documentary, and sketch comedy, with a scrappy energy that can lead to some truly beautiful shots, to say nothing of the tricks. Bing Liu’s Minding The Gap leans heavy into the medium’s documentary aspects, following the director’s own friends—generally drifting, pained young men—as they cycle through jobs, family problems, and therapeutic skating sessions throughout Rockford, Illinois. A close-up shot of a skateboard with the words “this device cures heartache” seems to be the thesis statement.
Will it be worth your time? Only if you’re interested in seeing someone unabashedly attempt to create a high-art skate video. (Reviews from Sundance, to be fair, were very positive.)

Watched on Hulu over the weekend and thought it was really well done. Needed more skating though.

I liked it a lot and he shot the skating that was specifically for it with some cool angles that were both palatable for mainstream and skate with out the ty Evans effect. It’s not really a skate movie though more of a coming of age/ domestic violence thing. Also Chicago skaters all dress like it’s 2010 still from the looks of it and I thought that was neat. Nice watch on a hungover Sunday.

It's a good watch, the beginning intro stuff had me nostalgic on my little skate crew. Zach(I think) with the kid was a bummer for the most part. It wasn't too artsy, just a typical documentary edit too.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

When I went to school in Illinois in the mid nineties everyone was still on the late eighties hair metal look.

Good film. I got a little choked up at the end.

You'll enjoy this a lot more than the trailer would have you believe if you're an easy cry like myself

wow, wasnt expecting much but this really hit home for me.  Is definitely a "coming of age" film where skateboarding just happens to play a role in their lives/connect them all, but like I said this really hit home.  I moved out of my hometown but too many people I know back home are either living zach or keire's life.  got choked up at the end,  if you dont skateboard I'm not sure if it would still have the same impact, but I think every smaller town has a similar skate scene and this showcases it well.

Super good, I’d wish he won the Oscar but shit even just to go from making skate vids to having your first(?) documentary nominated for Oscar is amazing and speaks to how good this film really is. If you got Hulu check it

I went to see this in the cinema a couple of weeks ago, it was amazing. I had pretty low expectations, after looking at the trailer, but the film is super good. Really, go see it.

Going to a showing of this next week, Keire and the producer are doing a panel discussion afterwards.

Really looking forward to it, feel like it could wind up being an awkward movie to go see with people though.

Nah I think while it gets a little deep on the subject matter it’ll make for good discussion between you and others especially if they skate too.

coming from the era where virtually all skaters came from a "broken home" or single mom type background, i heavily related to this. Not that the subjects involved suffering is a novelty or "refreshing", but i'm kind of relieved skating still brings kids with troubled background together and it's not just becoming a soccer mom dropping their little shits off at the park to instagram slomo sex changes to trap music all day scene.

Kind of surprised that this thread was still buried after the Oscar appearance. This was good on so many levels. In contrast to even experienced documentarians who can't handle a camera without a crew, this was one of the best filmed and edited documentaries I've seen.

Bing seems like such a good dude.  He filmed my local shop's(RIP) video a few years ago and I dug it.  Minding The Gap was robbed!
