Shackle Me Not...
« on: August 15, 2018, 11:03:13 AM »
As I get older and older (43 and counting) my mind keeps going back to the opening of Shackle Me Not and what a huge influence that had on me as a teen skater. I saw Future Primitive, I experienced Animal Chin, and I watched Savannah Slamma over and again...but those few minutes spent with Matt Hensley had me (and several other kids) headed to the local truck stop to find a chain wallet. I am not sure where I am going with this, but it was that part that shifted how I saw skateboarding in such a huge way. I realize that it happens for each generation/cycle in skateboarding, so it's certainly not a unique phenomenon, but 13 year old me was moved by those few minutes.

Tony Mag was kind of a weirdo, though.

Huge. I'm the same age as you and I remember watching those vids for the first time (also Hocus Pockus) and having a momentary panic that I had too much to learn. We watched the H street vids constantly. Before sessions, after sessions. Memorizing the quotes, looking for the music (Op Iv, Sub Society!) and so on... it defined everything we did, from clothes we wore, music choice, inside jokes... crazy to think about in this day and age of disposable clips.

Great video. The wheel slide is classic. My first real board was a Tony Mag. I did have like 5 King Size Hensley's. As a matter of fact I was trying to do front board nollie 270 out a few weeks ago like in his Transworld interview but I suck lol. I do think hokus pokus was sicker though. It was like questionable with tricks so far ahead of everyone although questionable is the only video that made me contemplate quitting skating  :-\

I had the same experience, only the formative video part for me was Bucky Lasek in Celebrity Tropical Fish.

I skated a contest in Oceanside in like 1988 and that exact jump ramp that he does the finger flip on was there.  I remember being so pumped cause this video had just came out.  They also had that crazy U shaped slider bar that was in all the old OG Oceanside contest videos...it was made out of metal for all those wondering (always thought it was a curb).

Ha if you think Tmags weird check out his ride(?) interview where hes wearing a crazy safari hat and he talks about wanting to actually kill M ternaski back in the day.
(edit  crazy! -I just clicked over to the other tab after just writing this post and the youtube was playing "15 years of enjoi" which I've never seen and Rodney was talking about plan b 'ending' cause of the passing of Mike Ternasky -sychronicity. )

Unlike my previous post in which i lied about the influence of Bucky Lasek, I am sincere in aggreeing with you when it comes to Jesse Neuhaus. Early nollie influence too, this nollie grab sequence is still a favourite, especially the 2nd to last frame

The opening montage still gives me chills to this day. When it freeze frames on the shackle me not sticker on t-mags board and the guitar kicks in...

Yup. First footage of the SF State rails, and those tuck-knee airs...  :o
Like Daewon said: if skateboarding is a ten story building, Rodney is on eleventh floor.
