Tricks that seemed impossible when they came out
« on: September 05, 2018, 02:04:27 AM »
When I first saw it I couldn't believe Andrew Reynolds fs blunt kickflip out on a handrail in The End was real.

What tricks struck you as completely impossible when you first saw them?

Hey, hey, hey. Don't be mean. We don't have to be mean because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Mike Mo fakie f/s crook 360 flip.

A bunch of stuff Creager did on picnic tables at the end of his What If? part.

I also remember being blown away the first time I saw someone doing a 360 on flat, it just didn't make sense someone could ollie well enough to spin all the way around without going off of something hah.

When hardflips first came out I was very confused.  People who weren't free stylers never thought about flipping their board that way before.

my friends and I use to always joke about the darkslide on a handrail never thinking it was possible.

also when VOV came out with that one footed back smith I didnt understand how he did that.

Ryan Reyes? I love his skating but now I’m wondering if I’m gotten him confused with.....david Reyes?

What I couldn’t believe were Cole’s three fucking Enders in New Blood. Go back and look at that Bs 3 flip into the Pitt; it is executed and landed so ridiculously perfect and the first instance of that trick (I think) being done down something and it’s just incredible.

Also Billy Mark’s switch bigspin heelflip boardslide ender in Good and Evil. Wtf
I'm going to argue that Placebo owes their entire career to a Canadian dude's skate video part. Appleyard should be getting royalties for this shit.

1:  Julio de la Cruz did things no man should be capable of. Always wondered if those were quick tricks for him at that time,  or if he spent hours to make them look like he did them in the regular. Just all those pressure flip variations turned my whole world upside-down.
2:  Bob's Mega part, and Danny's to a lesser extent, made me look at ramps in a while new light.
3: Carroll's noseslide/grind tricks seemed impossible at the time, until we figured it out. Then they were all just so much fun. Especially noseslide to 50-50. Pop it right in up on to there.

1. Keenan Milton's switch flip over the table at Lockwood (I was like 4 when this happened, but it was one of the first tricks that blew my mind when I started skating)

2. Westgate's boardslide up that whole rail in that "Zoo England" part, riding away with speed.

I could probably just do this on Koston. The first trick that pops to mind is his Yeah Right ender which was a Tre-flip Front Noseblunt on a rail.

More recent ones that come to mind is Wes's Darkslide on that concrete SD rail, and Kyle Walker's last rail in No Other Way.

speaking of yeah right, i was thinking of all the green-screened ramp tricks. came across this quartersnacks piece from 2012 - "Ten Years Since Yeah Right! and the Case For Increased Plausibility" http://quartersnacks.com/2012/11/ten-years-since-yeah-right-and-the-case-for-increased-plausibility/

will definitely need to update this article ten years later in 2022. crazy to think that dudes now have come pretty close to (and in the case of grinding up a handrail, already surpassed) these tricks that were concocted as jokingly impossible. still waiting for tiago to 5050 on top of two stacked picnic tables from flat.

PJWHL, also that Ryan Reyes photo reminds me of Kevin Rodrigues' early grab wallride / 50-50 down a handrail shot by Manu Schenck in that Polar ad, both photos blew my mind equally, I had been waiting for people to start skating rails like that
