Best Music Selection Throughout a Skater's Career
« on: September 06, 2018, 08:38:17 PM »
Hope the title makes sense. Anyway, someone posted in the deBobby thread:

Expand Quote
This and purple, John Maus and Brian Eno, Mac Demarco, Suicide...He may have the best track record of all time in my mind.
[close]
How can you forget his DC part was Elliott Smith

And it got me thinking of the music selection of other pros:

Arto - David Bowie "1984" and "Rock n' Roll Suicide", "Handsome Devil" by the Smiths, but then they hit us with Battles "Atlas" which sounds like robot elves squirching around.

Dylan - Ramones "Garden of Serenity" (shared part with The Butcher) is whatever, but then that "Cherry Red" song in A Time to Shine was chill, then Elliott Smith "Coast to Coast", Cass McCombs and Graham Nash in his Gravis part, Cherry had "Never Tear Us Apart", and I really liked the dark ass David Bowie song in his Huf part.

Anyone care to write out different pros' music careers? Favorites? Objective best choices? Pros with great music and subpar skating, or amazing skating and shitty music? Most random song choices for a part?

Carroll gets my vote... it may not be the best songs ever... but its the most suiting to him & his skating each time.

Jamie Thomas is similar... he knows what he wants & how to get there.

Jerry - cass mccombs, Tom waits, sonic youth, stereo lab, new order, mogwai.

Heath - Bowie, morrissey, shinda shims, nights in white satin, new order.

Dill - Radiohead, spoon, cass mccombs, animal collective,

Reynolds - Jimi Hendrix, roxy music, Donovan.

Somebody mentioned Carroll. I can’t think of hip hop centric skaters where I can really agree with. Please correct me with this because I know I’m wrong.

Uhh John Igei? Jeru, gangstarr, and nickatina come to mind.

Chris Milic picks music that suits his style.

Carrolls the first one that pops in my head.

Reynolds - Jimi Hendrix, roxy music, Donovan.
DJ Shadow??

Never thought about it but Elissa Steamer n Dylan had good songs.

Ave except for that 12 Jewels song in his Best of 411 I just watched.

Danny Montoyas soundtrack comes to mind at the moment...

Pat Raketsraw sticks out too.

No one will ace this, but I always thought Koston killed it with whatever he was matched with.

DGKalis has the most parts with songs I'd listen to if they weren't in a skate part.

MJ- joy division, new order, the stones, bowie, nina simone, built to spill... his fully flared songs weren't amazing but still good.

MJ for sure.

I’ve always loved the obscure but good old punk songs Corey Duffel has used, even when he wasn’t my cup of tea (been liking him more lately)

This actually makes me wonder what is the answer to the opposite of this question. Which artists has the best parts to their music. Without thinking too in-depth I would guest Dinosaur Jr. (Pops-Mosiac, Rudy-Video Days, Omar-Mindfield, Tosh-Sight Unseen, Grant-Mindfield, Alien-411).

Edit: Forgot the obvious guess of Morrisey.

David Lynch, Dennis Hopper, and Dean Stockwell killed it to this song.

Dinosaur also had the best Mike V part, Neil Blender and Steve Claar at Sadlands and weird Swank skating in Speed Freaks. They're all over that video because of Santa Cruz's deal with SST but those are for sure the stand outs.

Me and my skate pals sure did like firehose a whole lot because of Natas.

As cornball as I think his image was, Corey Duffel sure did skate to some good songs. Dead Moon Night is so fucking good.

Heath also put out some magical combinations of skating and music that I never get tired of. I'm sad that his head is getting messy but I'm grateful for what he did.
them cats are out getting mashed up to jungle, he's out mashing up jungle cats. it's just not gonna work.

corey duffel comes to mind

Some skaters might insist on songs, but with an example like jake johnson skating to animal collective in mind field and death in june in purple, i want to lean towards the filmers picking the music.
