I remember Julien being hella gool, hella gnar (before gnar was gnar) but still cool. I don't think he ever punked on a session or anyone, he'd just strike thru and do his thing. Especially if you'd run into him a china banks. Here's a little tribute painting I did a few years ago...mystyle was still sketchy a few years ago, but I guess it captures Julien.

I was thinking those were Simples.

Sole looks too thin and toecap too big for them to be Agahs.

sorry guys, not try'n to step on peoples toes, but im 100% certain they are agahs...
oh
there was an ad of julien doing a bluntslide to fakie on a block in a ditch. black and white photo, might have been for real but im not sure on that. theres some footage of it in dlx's "ride on"... anyone have?

They are Simples, they have the wavey gum sole, the rubber toe cap is bigger than the one on the Agahs and also this add is from the Jan 1994 issue so the photo is from summer 1993 or thereabouts whereas the Agahs came out like a year later.

i remember something whitley wrote once about how at one stage he wanted to be like julien: skate smooth and stylish, and rock cutoff ben's and simples with no socks.  pretty sure that's what's going on in that shot.

that's still sick though, the way the buildings and the background bend in as you go up the painting, like you're down there viewing it through an old school fish lens

sitting here looking up at my/your keenan portrait right now- easily the best skate-related item anybody ever hooked me up with.  thanks again buddy.

And if you've ever skated china banks you'd know how how impossible that is.

to me stranger is one of the few guys in the world that defines what skateboarding really is or how it should look like. he's got the eye for it, he's got the style.

don't mess with the stranger.

this is highly unlikely given his aversion of photos and trendy spots, but did he ever get anything at hubba?  would be rad.  carol's front feeble was great but julien has an excellent one too and that would have been sick there.  anyone recall that ad with him doing one on a rail?
