Mongo Switch
« on: June 27, 2007, 11:20:29 PM »
I know a lot of the younger guys these days don't push mongo regardless of their stance, but apart from Wenning (and Chad Tim Tim in the latest Element video), can anyone name me an older skater who uses both feet to push?

Even though my favourite skaters are perpetrators, I must say that I can't avoid the fact that I like it better when people completely avoid pushing mongo.

in a line in a video, baker2g i think? andrew reynolds starts a line pushing mongo, does a flatground trick, then pushes normal. always annoyed me.

The mongo, or the lack of consistency?

Just watched it again and you are absolutely right. Jeez, the number of times I've seen this part, you'd think I would have remembered. Too busy being amazed by the Herbie Hancock soundtrack working so well with the part.

Cheers!

Well speaking for myself I default to switch mongo whenever I'm not concentrating - I guess that is my natural steez unfortunatley; I'd far rather not!

I think it was partly because no-one really skated switch for the first few years I skated - boards didn't even have noses; people were used to skating "fakie" - it was backwards at the time which is why people pushed mongo when skating that way. Alas that stuck with me even after I learned to skate switch etc!

Fpr me, at the time, two of the most amazing things about GM's mouse part was the way he pushed switch and that tiny little scoopy switch backside he does in between bank to bench tricks; I couldn't believe how natural it seemed!

It is much better when people just do what is natural. I can't stand it when someone pushes both ways switch in a line. Consistency is really the only thing I care about when it comes to pushing, though switch pushing does look much better.

That definitely bothers me. I can't really think why they would change.

Can't speak for stevie, but on the gonz: pushing is the second aspect of skateboarding (gonz has said the essence of skateboarding is turning) moving all around with pushing and with which foot is a stylistic choice by the gonz. plus, he does what he feels, even if it looks like a 'lack of consistency'; gonz lack consistency, that's gonz.

I probably should have clarified that I was talking about Stevie. I actually like when the Gonz does that pushing.

I do it still some times on certain quick set ups, I get more power out of the push. I had to learn to push switch it always felt weird but now it feels pretty norml and I like te way it looks in lines when its done good a la the Choi man.

Yeah same here sorta. I skated a good 3 years before even MEETING another skater in junior high, then I learned ollies and kickflips and switch wasn't even a concept to me, and by the time I started dabbling with switch and fakie I was way set in my left-foot-on-board push, and I was still pretty young and there wasn't crazy pressure to never push mongo.

I never really notice when someone pushes reg or mongo when skating switch, so long as it looks natural. There's nothing worse than someone doing gnarly tricks, but struggling not to push mongo, just to not be made fun of. Seriously, a natural mongo switch push beats a shitty switch push anyday. It's a real dumb politic, I think.

Fair enough.

Oh and Haslam pushes natural both ways too. Prolly should never have started this topic...
