Should i repair it? or should i get the new slim?

This is the old 60gb ps3, so its super valuable. any suggestions?
[close]

Yeah, in my opinion you're just better off getting a new slim. I had a talk with my friend about this today actually. I mean, it will cost $150+ to get it fixed. They will send you a refurbished PS3 and it takes 30 days or more. If you have the cash, I'd recommend getting the new slim for $299. Only problem with the slim is that backwards compatability for PS2 is completely gone. You can still play PS1 games, though.

By the way, just in case you guys didn't know, people have given it the name YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death, in regards to 360's Red Ring Of Death). It is an over-heating problem which mostly happens with launch 60 GB PS3s anywhere after a year or two of owning it. I'm thinking mine is gonna go up soon too, so I'll probably be getting a slim as well.
[close]

fuck, hopefully mine will slip under the radar and keep pumping for a while, I dont want to drop the cash for a slim right now which I most definitely would if it fucked up, not to mention i'd lose all my purchased games and map packs right?

Staying away from WAW for a while, Modern, NHL and Skate have been in heavy circulation

Nah, you'll still have all your stuff. You'll just have to download them again. Trophies and purchases are linked to your account. So all you have to do is log in with your existing name on the new PS3 and re-download them from the PS Store.

I must be missing something there, don't rate it. Battlefield 1943 any one?

Since I having nothing to lose, iam gonna try and repair it.
Ive dismantled it already, and got my game out (so many screws!).
From what I saw on youtube, I just need a heat gun, and thermal grease.

should be ready by 2m, thats if I can get those ingredients by today.

So playing CODWAW.

PS3 starts freaking out, and then before you know.

YELLOW.
Its fucked.
Been a Good run. Wont be on for awhile.

exactly what happened with mine, paying world at war, starts to tweak, i went to bed and woke up to yellow death. im still tryin gto figure out if i want to pay to get my b/c 80gig fixed or if i want to just wait and get a new slim. its a heart breaking moment.
[close]

dude it fucking sucks, cause i was playing online, and it started to twitch. Like the host was leaving. Then boom! YLOD!

by the looks of it, I can try to repair, which means buying the ingredients online. Or just gettin the slim.

From what i heard is that you send your ps3 for a repair, and they give you a refurbished one.
so if i can get my game out of the 60gb, I will just get the slim model.

Dont want to wait a few months for a ps3.

I already posted this above, but you'll be fine dude. You don't lose anything. Your trophies and purchased games and stuff are linked to your PSN account. So if your PS3 breaks down, just sign in on your existing account with the new PS3 and just re-download everything you've purchased. You won't have to buy them again. However, I would recommend backing up your saved data utility, which can be copied.

Scroll up to my reply.

oh ok, fuck with all these ps3s breaking down im assuming the worst, my ps3 sounded like a fucking jet engine plane before i cleaned it with a vacuum, either way, i'd rather take my chances with the 4 percent or whatever for PS3 fails but the fucking regular 52 percent xbox 360 fails

Oh man! Age of Empires is super good. They're really fun. The hours fly by.

I'm playing Resident Evil.

Also, how is the Force Unleashed? They're going for $20 on ebay. Worth it or should I just rent it?

^ buy the force unleashed. and get all the dlc for it too. the storyline is probably the best part about it, and you get to play as vader for the first part of the game. jesus i sound like a dork.

So my 1st try at fixing, took awhile bc i had to reassemble everything. Turned it on annnnnnd YLOD!

goddamn i said.

So i was tripping out that the thermal grease wasnt the right one. so later that day, i re-did it.
this time used the heat gun longer, reapplied the the thermal grease, then reassemble.

VOILA!
fixed!
it costed me $30 total.
$20 for the heat gun, $10 for the thermal grease.

btw the disc drive wasnt working, but again  i fixed it. Ill save that story for later.
anyways Iam gonna return the heat gun and get my money back.

So far so good.
I think iam gonna sell my baby since i dont play ps2 games that often and get a new slim.

Just fixed my ps3 today(40gig). Wasn't playin games for like 5 months, thought the blu-ray drive was fried but turns out it was just dust or something. Or the fact that i smoke in my room. Either way, when ever i put it all back together, it worked straight away, been playing skate 2 for the last 4 hours. . . . . .stoked!!

If anybody else has this problem, follow this videos instructions. Worth a try.

actually in one of the videos i watched the guy taped the most of the screws beside the hole they came out of so he wouldnt forget. im actually pretty hyped because after your success story i decided to spend a couple hours lurking every corner of the internet and pretty much everyone that did it ended up with success and it almost always cost at the most $60 instead of the near $200 sony wants. and it actually doesnt sound that hard either.

I haven't finished it yet, but yea there doesn't seem to be much of a story. I don't even really care though, stumbleing upon a secret underground government facility, and having to fight your way to save the girl is good enough for me. I'm gonna have to read the orson scott card books this game was based on, I've read Enders Game and that was a badass book.

I played Shadow Complex last night. That and Trials are good eye candy for the side scroller lover at heart. I can only honestly picture these as Nintendo games gone in the right direction.

Beatles Rock Band is going to be the most over-hyped thing since that band... Yeah, I said that.

Motown Rock Band would destroy.
