I gotta say it's probably one of my favorite movies that I've watched in quite some time.  Pedro Almodovar definitely put his own stamp on the horror genre because this wasn't like anything I've watched in recent memory;  He had said in an interview that he wanted to do his own take on Frankenstein and the film has a little bit of that influence but rather than a mad scientist it's a man surgeon/modern times + medicine.  Everything is done right in here tone, music, and acting is superb.  It's cool to Antonio Banderas in something good again because it feels like it's been a minute.  I didn't read to much about the film when it was originally coming out either which is good because it would have ruined some of the surprises throughout.

playing catch up on some movies i meant to see.  this was a really well done thriller that takes a fairly unconventional approach to an old genre.  the two young actors in it are amazing

inspiring, thought-provoking film, even if it had too many Jack Johnson and Modest Mouse songs in it.

Feel like it's about the 15th time this movie has been made, but Denzel is always good.

Yeah, that's pretty unnerving.  Not sure what you're running in terms of speakers, but Gaspar Noe put a extremely low frequency sound during the first part of the film because the sound actually causes disorientation and sometimes nausea.  Pretty fucked.

i've seen it.  interesting film.

it's not exactly a new idea, but the way the film is structured is brilliantly done.   if anything, the first shot of the film alone should win some kind of award.   truly epic use of no-cutting steadicam shot (up there with the opening to GOODFELLAS or BOOGIE NIGHTS).  that blew me away.  the film is definitely abrasive and unnerving, as HATE says.   i think most people find realistic rape scenes to be disturbing - this film has to have one of the hardest ones to watch ever.   not the kind of film i'd recommend to say, my mom, but people who are into film and can handle more difficult material would most likely find it interesting.  this film definitely seems to divide people.  people either love it or hate it.  i don't know if i'd want to see it again, but i thought it was impressive

^^^ hated enter the void. Way too pretentious.

Irreversible was pretty great though. The idea at least. The rape scene was pretty out there, but Monica Bellucci is a total babe. Wonder if there's any relation the the porn star Maria Bellucci

i watched enter the void and i'm gonna have to say nay. so alex at the start of the film says once people experience a post-death out-of-body experience they want to to be reincarnated so that they can have that experience again, but our very own ether surfer got to see: 1) his sister stripping, 2) his sister getting canoodled by a strip club manger, 3) his friend going homeless, 4) his sister getting an abortion, and 5) his homeless friend fucking his sister at a love hotel. if i had that out of body experience i would be hoping that i would never return to consciousness. fuck that. a blank white space in the corner of the cosmos would be sounding that much more appealing.

another thing, i think this movie was produced by the lead actress... just so she could show off her nipples. not that there's anything wrong with that, but sseriosly, who breast feeds immediatly after giving birth. that was written in there just for another nipple close up.

ohhh, speaking of which, that circle of life ending was corny. yah, he was gonna get reincarnated, we all saw it coming, but that shit was giving me tree of life vibes. so in conclusion, i say it's a degenerate tree of life

Gnarliest movie I have ever seen though. I'd have to say I liked Irreversible better just because Enter the Void was very repetetive, and that fuckin noise pissed me off haha. Nothing like seeing someones face and head get pummled in early in the morn

^^ I think it's like number 2? of most disturbing films of all time. I thought the editing was good and had good camera work A couple of scenes were a little too much, but overall decent film.

As gnarly as "Irreversible" was, I think that "I Stand Alone" was even worse. Something about watching a dude punch his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach and then rape his daughter just doesn't feel right.

I don't know, maybe I'm just normal.

Awesome.

And Martyrs isn't that bad, it's just a straight torture porn kind of movie with a bunch of rambling philosophical bullshit tacked on at the end. And a pretty badass action-y segment.

If you liked Oldboy, I'd highly recommend this movie.  The movie is similar in visual style to Oldboy but less operatic and emotional.  It's more mechanical and cruelly ironic.  Easily the best in the vengeance trilogy.

Do it!  It's the most disturbing movie i've seen.  Saw it a few years ago and still think about it from time to time.  It's just relentless.  specially the second half (which after seeing the first half, you'll wonder how that's possible)
