I'm about halfway through Vol. 1 of Nymphomaniac.

It's a good movie. I actually like Lars von Trier and honestly don't see what's so divisive about him? He's a great filmmaker and there are technical things that are really cool that he does.

Shia LaBeouf's attempt at an English accent is poor but not that distracting

I really enjoy melancholia and watch it often kind of as a go to movie when I am not sure what to put on.

I was a bit disappointed in Melancholia - visually it's amazing - I think that bitchy mother in law hit too close to home and put me off it.

The spiders in Enemy have to do with him and his infidelities - after watching I had to read in to it a bit but it makes sense - one of those movies you need to watch a couple times to pick up on every thing. The spider in the beginning, which is really the end is his bad ways that need to end - she turned into a spider because she was scared of him and how he was - it's a cool movie.

I did just see Enemy... it was filmed in Toronto, It was decent, I liked it, but didn't understand the spider scenes

King of New York was pretty good, beautifully shot too.  Abel Ferrara is a G.

Hardcore - (1979)

Pretty cool, sleazy movie with the always awesome George C Scott and Peter Boyle.  A religious family's (from Grand Rapids, MI) daughter goes missing in LA, and turns up months later in some underground porn movies.  Daddy heads over to investigate and bring her back... ends up entangled in the seedy world of under-under-underground 70's porn.  Somewhat similar to the later movie 8MM.

A bit anti-climactic ending, but overall a great watch.

Rewatched Blade Runnder for the first time in ages, forgot how much I love that movie.

Did anyone else binge on robin williams movies after the sad news?

Just watched edge of tomorrow, i didn't see the trailer nor read anything about the movie beforehand so it was pretty good, Tom Cruise is a bit annoying/ redundant though, he should retire and come out of the closet.

Fucking hilarious!
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Skateboarding is nothing but a game to find the right fits to appear like you're a proportional human being instead of a midget or a giant.

Regarding Andre Rublev - the 2.35:1 aspect ratio is windowboxed on my widescreen televisions at home and it's a shame because the photography and images look really nice in this film.

Solaris has the same aspect ratio but it's been enhanced for 16:9 thankfully

I've been going ham on the Criterion lately. Going at the catalogue in a totally scattergun kind of way

Unemployed, not going to school for the semester, just been drinking a shitload of coffee every day, lifting weights, reading books and watching films and jerking off.

I'd probably kill myself if it weren't for these diversions

I feel this. Sub in basketball for the weights and writing for the books and that's about where I was at last year to a T.

I went into it knowing fuck all about the book and was very glad I did. Fincher's turning into a bit of a one trick pony but fuck does it ever work for me. Neal Patrick Harris and his character are pretty awful but everything else was excellent.

David Fincher may be a one-trick pony, but he has a very good one trick..  I enjoyed Gone Girl a lot!  David Fincher might not top Social Network yet but this one is close. If there's one thing Fincher loves to do is continuously fuck with his audience.   I disagree with you on NPH though, his character was a creep but he played it surprisingly well.  Tyler Perry was surprisingly decent too, nothing special though.  Emily Ratajkowski looks very, very, VERY good naked and I'm not just saying that because "she has cum-on-me-tits".  The girl I'm talking to, maybe dating soon (Fingers fucking crossed), kinda looks like her..   ::)  I think the best thing about the movie was Rosamund Pike's performance (Best Actress nominee??) and Trent Reznor's dreamlike score which was worth the $8.50 ticket alone.  /filmgeekrant

I've gotta agree with HATE! on this one, NPH really didn't do it for me. It's not because I'm used to him as Barney Stinson because I have never seen HIMYM, I just thought his acting wasn't up to standard with everyone else in the film. Also, have you read the book? Because when you read it NPH is the last person that comes to mind for a movie adaptation, that's just my opinion though. It's funny you mention The Social Network as a reference point, Fight Club is easily Fincher's best and would be the movie of his career to "top".

Actually that was Mooley who had issues with NPH.  He didn't bother me too much, but when I read the book, all I could picture was Pete Campbell from Mad Men as Desi.  NPH does't look "old money" enough.

My mistake, and wow that's spot on.

Ooooooooh, that would be a better casting choice.  I love Fight Club but in terms of directorial work Social Network might be his magnum opus for right now.  For its time Fight Club was, and still is, an incredible piece of work but much of it can be owed to Edward Norton/Brad Pitt's performances, Dust Brothers score, and the amazing sound/visual editing style.  People almost knew what to expect, not with the story of course, but with the style of the film even with Fincher on board directing it.  Social Network was a nice surprise from Fincher, he was able to push fucking Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield into pretty great dramatic roles.
