Man dies in hospital after Calgary police use Taser during arrest on weekend

CALGARY — Calgary police say a man has died in hospital after officers used a Taser while arresting him on the weekend.

It's the second time in less than a week a person has died after Alberta police used a stun gun during an arrest. Calgary police say the dead man in this latest case is Gordon Walker Bowe, 30, from Castlegar, B.C. Bowe was rushed to hospital Saturday night in critical condition after police responded to calls about a break-and-enter.

Officers found a man in a basement of a home. They say the man was agitated and wouldn't follow commands. An attempt to subdue him with a Taser was unsuccessful.

Neighbours reported hearing "a ruckus" from the house, which was vacant, and that it sounded like the man was trying to get away from police.

Police say he was eventually arrested, but went into medical distress while being assessed by paramedics. They could not say over the weekend whether the weapon had actually jolted the man or not.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was on the scene Saturday night, and had taken over the investigation Monday...

John Dooks, president of the Calgary Police Association, said he has spoken with the officers involved and was told the death was unrelated to the Taser.

The device never jolted the man because only one prong made contact, he said.

"It's the offender's actions, and his own choice of substance abuse or criminal activity, that resulted in what happened here," said Dooks.

Who knows.

You know damn well you'd taser someone, if you could, over shooting a bullet while on the clock. People need to submit, it's the Law if you get caught.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

HAHAHA, imagine being a cop and breaking up a skate session with bullets.

I'm not a fan of tasers or any form of non-lethal force. If a cop knows it's not going to kill you, and thus he won't get in trouble, he won't hesitate to use weapons against you even if they are completely unnecessary. At least a lethal weapon makes the motherfucker think twice about his actions.

The only time weapons should ever be necessary is if the person is being threatening, and in that case if you threaten a cops life be prepared to put yours at risk. If someone is just resisting, wrestle the motherfucker. Don't tase people bro.

I don't think you can write off non-lethal weapons as something cops can use whenever they want for whatever reason without repercussions.
If someone innocent gets tased by a cop in a situation that doesn't warrant it, that's really shitty, but there are situations that warrant it. I think most cops are going to choose taser over wrestling a belligerent sketchcase in the dingy basement of an abandoned house more often than not.

Some of the non lethal weapons they are using in the middle east are pretty fucked and they would hurt just as much as being shot
