I don't think I'll go see Metallica tonight
« on: November 23, 2008, 11:47:02 AM »

Why I should not:

1) 1989 is behind us
2) $50-$70 per ticket
3) Might waste some of that $ on the new GnR cd that came out today
4) I'm pretty sure James voted for McCain/Palin (has he not bribed Lucifer for the same spoils)
5) I've seen them several times
6) I have no one to go with  :'(
7) James has not apologized, though he has made concessions
8) Lars' concert drumming is not as technically great on the old stuff as his studio work
9) I would be supporting the 1 album/1 tour model of artistry
10) Even if the new album is "better", James' singing & stage persona is goofy at best
11) On their website there are plenty of free bootlegs from the good old days

Why I should
1) I may regret missing the opportunity to see them do whiplash, blackened, dyer's eve, battery live one more time
2) Nothing better to do
3) Opening bands, The Sword & Down deserve support
4) I still like Lars & Kirk

yeah dude, don't go. the new stuff is better, but that doesn't make up for almost 20 years of shitty music and behavior.
KFC should give cockatiels with their variety bucket, so you can eat one bird and love another.

as much as i am not a fan of their latest album, i would still go watch em....  they are a band my brother and i have sworn to see live at least once before we die.....

as long as they stick with their classics and avoid stuff post black album, it will be good...

Whoa whoa whoa, you might buy the new Guns N Roses album???
DON'T.
It fucking sucks.
It's streaming on myspace right now, you can hear the whole thing for free and I got to the third or fourth song and trust me it fucking sucks ass.

As far as going to see the mighty Met, yeah I have seen them three times and I would go again if they came here for the simple fact that it's Metallica, and their live show is incredible.
Yeah it's not 1989 anymore but just seeing them do the old shit live would be sick one more time.
The new album is pretty lame and I'm sure they'd be playing a lot of stuff off of it, but I'd be able to handle it, fuck 50-80 bucks for a ticket, I'd gladly pay that to see them again.
I don't know, I'm a sucker when it comes to them, even with all the shitty stuff after the black album, they're the main band I grew up with and that shit is special to me so I guess I'm a sentimental dummy like that but they do kill it live, as you are already aware.

Up to you, either way see them or don't but I'm telling you DON'T SPEND ANY AMOUNT OF FUCKING MONEY ON THAT AXL ROSE BULLSHIT. That ain't Guns N Roses, that's Axl alone wiht some wack studio bullshit homos backing him up. GARBAGE.

Hearing Blackened live would cancel out all the cons.

When asked about the craziest thing he saw on the road Lars said:

"Axl's a friend, and I don't want to compromise that. But as for "fun" crazy: He wrote his (half) brother, Stuart, a $25,000 check every day to throw these lavish theme parties. It was like, we're in Indianapolis, so there were Formula One cars everywhere, with all the girls dressed up in pit-crew uniforms. It was decadence at the highest level I'd ever seen, a Caligula kind of outlandishness. There were orgies, sure. Was I involved? Yes. Well, I was in the same room — we'll leave it at that."

I've never understood the appeal of seeing a band play live...

They never sound nearly as good as they do on their albums, you pay 5X what the CD its self cost, you're herded into a crowded ass stadium and packed together like animals, and chances are you'll spend half the time there waiting in lines for various shit.

I would see myself getting so bored after two or three songs.

All that for the "novelty" of seeing them play live? Nah.

I got to see them live in 1991 in jackson,ms when they were touring for the black album. I remember them mostly playing stuff from their earlier albums so I was pretty stoked, but after that I lost a lot of interest.

You made a wise choice
I get to see Devil semi regularly and his little dude is rad as hell. My wife and I aren't into having little ones, but that'll give me more time to be a god uncle and teach Devil's spawn to slang weed.

Thanks for the input ya'll.
I was torn about skipping over seeing them do their old shit.

I did not go for one main reason: I hate James' current singing style and stage attitude. It's too hammy.
I liked it when he did not have so much of a persona/shtick.
As mentionned above, I relive the old days by downloading FREE soundboard bootlegs from here:

Yeah, live versions of your favorite songs, James Hetfield notwithstanding, are so great.

I always wish bands would only record new songs after months and years of touring. By then they have learned the songs' greatest spots are and play with them. Plus you get more solos, fun medleys, and neat covers.
I love Beastie Boys bootlegs where MMM puts in new loops. AdRock is great at making new lyrics.
And in one of those old Metallica bootlegs Hetfield sings "DickRash" instead of Whiplash!
