Prescription Drugs Kill 300 Percent More Americans than Illegal Drugs
Monday, November 10th, 2008

By David Gutierrez | A report by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission has concluded that prescription drugs have outstripped illegal drugs as a cause of death.

An analysis of 168,900 autopsies conducted in Florida in 2007 found that three times as many people were killed by legal drugs as by cocaine, heroin and all methamphetamines put together. According to state law enforcement officials, this is a sign of a burgeoning prescription drug abuse problem.

“The abuse has reached epidemic proportions,” said Lisa McElhaney, a sergeant in the pharmaceutical drug diversion unit of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s just explosive.”

In 2007, cocaine was responsible for 843 deaths, heroin for 121, methamphetamines for 25 and marijuana for zero, for a total of 989 deaths. In contrast, 2,328 people were killed by opioid painkillers, including Vicodin and Oxycontin, and 743 were killed by drugs containing benzodiazepine, including the depressants Valium and Xanax.

Alcohol directly caused 466 deaths, but was found in the bodies of 4,179 cadavers in all.

While the number of dead bodies containing heroin jumped 14 percent from the prior year, to a total of 110, the number of deaths influenced by the painkiller oxycodone increased by 36 percent, to a total of 1,253.

Across the country, prescription drugs have become an increasingly popular alternative to the more difficult to acquire illegal drugs. Even as illegal drug use among teenagers have fallen, prescription drug abuse has increased. For example, while 4 percent of U.S. 12th graders were using Oxycontin in 2002, by 2005 that number had increased to 5.5 percent.......

What doesn't kill people?

I mean it's the wrong use of things that cause the deaths, not that things exist or are legal:

Cars kill people.
Skateboards kill people.

Should cars and skateboards be illegal?

Food probably kills more people than anything. The over-eating and ingesting of cholesterol laden foods for decades can be directly linked to the four leading causes of death:

Heart disease: 652,091

Cancer: 559,312

Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 143,579

Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 130,933

Does anyone in the world suggest that most restaurants be closed down and fatty foods be made illegal?

This kind of disconnect between reality and what people believe about freedom and drugs is fucking bizarre.

lol I know.

But it's true, the fact that these drugs are illegal is what causes the crime, the same was true with alcohol during prohibition, and has been known by virtually everyone who's taken a serious look at the issues for centuries

You're dumb. Prescription drugs kill people when they are abused and used incorrectly. Illegal drugs kill people no matter how you use them (eventually).

And as for your statistics... have you considered that the supply of prescription drugs is much higher then that of illegal, and thus a vast majority of people use prescription?

The history of illegal drugs goes all the way back to the civil war, even then when drugs like heroin and opium were completely legal, they destroyed a generation of injured veterans. Going back further, opium was legal for centuries in China, and there were houses built specifically for opium addicts to go and waste away in...

If you're somehow advocating that drugs like these should be legalized, then fuck you. If you're talking about shit like weed (which was legal much longer then most other drugs) then yes I'll agree with you. Weed is no more harmful then alcohol and should not be illegal.

So do you agree that Fatty foods should be illegal then? And most restaurants be shut down?

Because you're being inconsistent if not-the statistics show plainly that no drug, legal or not could ever match the destructive force they are, killing millions per year.

And yes alcohol and cigarettes lead these illegal drugs in deaths and disease even more.

The statement "prescription drugs kill people when they are abused and used incorrectly" is true of EVERYTHING. Including cocaine, weed, and stronger drugs like heroin. And it's not like people who want these drugs can't get them as it is. Just the fact that they are illegal creates the dangerous environment for most of the poorest among us to live in.

Actually, trans-fat ingredients have been outlawed due to the health risks. However, comparing a big mac to a line of cocaine is pretty extreme...

And back to your example that "cars and skateboards kill people"... the big difference here is that cars and skateboards also have positive benefits to society, and the same goes with prescription drugs. What benefit would America ever see from legalizing dangerous recreational drugs?

Prescription drugs are meant to be MEDICINE, as in help cure or treat people. Illegal hardcore drugs are poison that give you a short high at the cost of your mind/body. They don't benefit anything.

Again, i'm all for revising the list of illegal drugs, and taking things like weed and maybe a few other ones off their and legalizing them, but most of them definitely belong on that list.

Actually, trans-fat ingredients have been outlawed due to the health risks. However, comparing a big mac to a line of cocaine is pretty extreme...

Comparing two things that people ingest is pretty extreme? As I said, eating these fatty foods causes millions more deaths than cocaine, but you know...whatever.

And back to your example that "cars and skateboards kill people"... the big difference here is that cars and skateboards also have positive benefits to society, and the same goes with prescription drugs. What benefit would America ever see from legalizing dangerous recreational drugs?

Oh wow, there are virtually endless amounts of positive benefits. First of all violence, gangs, and crimes would all immediately decrease. There would be safer, cleaner drugs on the markets. Poor inner city neighborhoods would become inhabitable again, we would see new tax revenues and new job creation, the ending of black markets and on and on.... you know just like what happened when the the prohibition of alcohol was ended.

We would also see less violence in ending the states role in the drug war, and save billions and be able to focus our police elsewhere.

There are many more common sense benefits if you're interested.

Prescription drugs are meant to be MEDICINE, as in help cure or treat people. Illegal hardcore drugs are poison that give you a short high at the cost of your mind/body. They don't benefit anything.

What is medicine? In most of the cases from that story, drugs like oxycotten are meant to be pain killers, and many of the other new popular ones are meant to help people from depression...which is basically the exact reasons people take something like marijuana or cocaine. They want to feel happy. Marijuana is actually been shown to have many positive health benefits, and even cocaine has been shown to stimulate activity in certain areas of the brain. But really what benefits do alcahol, cigarettes, and fatty foods give to society? They kill millions annually, look at the tens of thousands of drunk driving deaths, heart disease, the huge numbers of violence linked to alcohol, lung cancer.....

Millions of deaths, billions in cost...do you want them to be illegal as well?

Again, i'm all for revising the list of illegal drugs, and taking things like weed and maybe a few other ones off their and legalizing them, but most of them definitely belong on that list.

Guess you love gangs. I don't.

Cause you're not gonna be able to keep people from doing these things, or keep them off the streets.

You think the negative impact of illegal drugs only exists because they're illegal? Wow...

It's so typical to blame the problems of the ghettos and slums of America on the government. If we were talking about china, then maybe I'd agree with you, but this is AMERICA... there's so much fucking opportunity in this country. People are handed free educations, and what to they do? They act like thugs and drop out of school and look for the easiest way to make money, which is always going to be the illegal way.

If you think legalizing drugs would suddenly turn all these drug dealers into honest people, you're wrong. If every illegal drug in America were suddenly legalized, the pharmaceutical and tobacco companies would instantly look to capitalize on it and create their own market, and then all the drug dealers would have to resort to some new form of crime to get by... do you know why people sell drugs? Because they have no education, no skills, and no experience, and that's the only market they can tap into. You don't see gangs running creating their own computer electronics to peddle, or manufacturing car parts do you? That's because things like that require skill and eduction. Selling drugs doesn't.

Legalizing drugs would just create new forms of crime, and lead to a hell of a lot more substance abuse then already exists in this country.

No.

But the majority of the crimes related with illegal drug use are a result of the drugs being illegal in the first place.

The exact same things happened during the prohibition of alcohol.

There are lots of bad things that can happen if you can take drugs, the same with alcohol or ingesting a chili dog.

Either all three are up to the consumer or none are, or you're being inconsistent.

They act like thugs and drop out of school and look for the easiest way to make money, which is always going to be the illegal way.

If you're referring to inner cities, then the reason that people turn to the selling and using of drugs is because there is too little opportunity, not too much. Thinking that blacks in inner city schools have it easy trying to compete with kids from affluent families in the suburbs that go to schools that aren't falling apart and filled with violence...then you're crazy.

And I don't know who is being handed free educations-if you make fantastic grades and score well on every entry test, you have a chance at competing for scholarships...but most students that end up going to college usually leave school with at least 30,000 in debt in student loans.

Some countries give things like free college and health care. We do not.

You don't see gangs running creating their own computer electronics to peddle, or manufacturing car parts do you? That's because things like that require skill and eduction. Selling drugs doesn't.

Again you're dealing with a symptom, not the root problem.

Of course drug dealers wouldn't turn into honest people, but the power that the controlling gangs have that use violence to control these substances across the US would be gone, no one WANTS to have to deal with a scary drug dealer, and would gladly buy  it at a store or get it from a hospital/pharmacy-but many drug dealers aren't as sensationalized murderers that we see in the movies. Many do this activity because as you state, they have no other way to make a living, because they didn't have rich parents to send them to private universities, so their two choices are either:

1.)work at mcdonalds
2.)sell drugs

Choice one will barely provide for one person, and it certainly won't provide for a family, so they pretty much have to do this.

So the REAL problem, is that we don't aren't providing the kind of quality jobs here anymore.

So untill you fix that problem, and start giving people in inner cities quality educations, making things illegal will just ensure that drug dealers will forever stay in this underground black market business. Where as if it was legal, who knows maybe they could start a "Weed club" like a bar, or work for a company distributing, safe quality drugs like weed, the same as truck drivers for budweiser or watever.

But we also need to stop outsourcing all our manufacturing jobs and shit but watevs.

Legalizing drugs would just create new forms of crime, and lead to a hell of a lot more substance abuse then already exists in this country.

There is no evidence for this claim whatsoever. Again, we have prohibition as a perfect example. When we had to end prohibition of alcohol for public outcry, crime DECREASED, and people were able to drink at safe places and drink alcahol that was safe and clean.

It's very likely that most of the same would happen if drugs were made illegal.

There are likely to be some negatives, as we all live with the negatives that Alcohol, cigarettes, and fatty foods-we will live with these whether they are made legal or not, we just won't have all the extra crime that goes along with them.

You're ignoring what I was trying to say earlier...

There was a time when drugs were perfectly legal in America, and they led to all kinds of other social problems... and there came a point where these problems got bad enough that congress passed new laws, and this was a time when there was no FDA, no regulation, nothing... so to outlaw a substance was much more significant back then then it would be today.

I'm not here disagreeing that drugs cause problems, but simply legalizing them isn't the solution, and it sure as fuck isn't the solution to those people who live in desperation's problems...

If they caused all these social problems then why did the CIA and police officers participate in selling them? The government couldn't give a fuck about us. (talking about heavy drugs like cocaine)
Again, the rate for white men in jail for drugs was 736 per 100,000, for black men 4,789 per 100,000.

The reason drugs are illegal is because they became class related. Just like alcohol. Pot was brought in by the Mexicans, poor people liked it. That made it bad, so they made it illegal.

I'm 100% anti drug war. Legalize all drugs.

That being said, I'm sure the rates of legal deaths are higher because of the fact that when something is illegal, people do less of it.

The whole ratio of people dying from legal vs illegal drugs isn't a fair comparison. Far more people take legal ones so the numbers are off.
