About how much land would you say you need, in order to start raising bees?
I've been thinking about maybe starting to do it, when I'm housesitting for my parents in the Summer.

Like they have a moderately sized, side yard, but there's neighbors on the other side of the fence.
You think they'd get pissed about it?

bees will travel for forage so your yard don't have to sustain them. in fact, they seem to go up and out, totally neglecting flowers w/in feet of their home. they describe distances to nectar via inerpretive 'waggle dances' and i don't think they have a piece of language [dance] for short distances so they can only say 'roses 200 ft south' or whatever. that's my theory.
so for neighbors, i've got mine on a fence line and the plumber on the other side got stung once but he also swatted at the bee. i told him 'just walk away if they're warning you' and i give him a little jar of honey every yr.
some people are real pussies about it but the thing of bees is they're only defensive of their home. bees on flowers are peaceful. even at the hive they're usually sweet unless i start hitting yellowjakcets w/ my electric tennis racket and they just seem me wil'in and don't realize i'm on their side.
i recommend it. they'll change the flora of your area, pollinating what they want and making more of it. they're the opposite of people, everything they touch improves.

i installed 4 new nucs today. 2 in my yard and 2 at the golf course. the Queens are marked which takes the sport out of finding them but sure is convenient. think i saw 3 of them today.
received some gentle coercion [bees landing on my hands like 'we could be stinging you, be gentle'] as well as a few deserv-ed stings. overall, great day, happy to be around bees again.

out of curiousity, how many times a year do you get stung? i think ive only been stung like 5 or 6 times in my life and it pisses me off every single time. the last time they got me right on the tip of my nose and i looked like rudolph for an hour.

i've gotten like 5 in 2 days but then i installed 3 hives w/ no stings. sometimes i'll go a few wks, a month w/ none but i prolly average one a wk for half the yr more or less. 26?
that sounds low, maybe 50 a yr but it's not that bad. to me it's like falling on some stairs or something. mildly painful, mildly enjoyable pain if that makes sense.
sposedta be great for you immune system too.

I'm really jealous and at the same time stoked on your bee keeping Sharktits. One day I hope to have enough spare land to host bees.

That's not too bad! Bees don't bother me at all, it's hornets and wasps that annoy the fuck outta me. I get those fishing/camping all the time in NW Ontario.

I once got stung by a bee on my nipple though and that hurt like fuck lol.

I'm stoked on your bee keeping and stories!

that's it, i love these little ladies. we got marked queens this yr which makes em easy to find but i like that game of finding them w/out the assist. oh well. i've got wicked gentle bees this yr. i've installed and inspected 6 hives and i barely got 2 stings. i got more buying them.

so my Russians arrived last night, i put them in a hive this morning. here's a little clip of my 3 hives in my garden w/ tori amos song. my out yard i 4 deep [2 mine, 2 my pals'] and i know a few people who got bees since i've known them. i don't wish ill on any bees and they're an integral part of the ecosytem but lowkey i feel a little competitive. i want my bees to style on everyone else's bees.
i'm getting really good at spotting the Queens and i got my little Salvadorean neighbor to help me inspect yesterday.
maybe he'll get bees when he's older.
there's a skater at my DIY who got a package of bees, are there no slap pals w/ bees yet?

just some garden footage of 2 forager bees. one getting pollen to feed the children, one getting nectar to turn into honey. i wanted to open the hives and hassle the bees but you're not sposedta work them on gray/rainy days and the sky is on the brink like j.mascis.

so we're in a nectar flow right now and at least one of my hives is producing on a level we'll have a harvest. first yr bees, you're not really sposedta take from but if they fill a 3rd floor, it's ok. my Russians are slow on the draw and my pastel hive just received a 3rd floor [honey super] so hopefully they'll kick in this yr too.

here's my pastel hive swarming on me. i was so good to ya'll and this is how you repay me?
i lost half of hive one yesterday. swarms are beautiful and amazing but there goes half your workforce [including the Queen] so it's potentially costly if i gotta buy a new Queen. oh well, my neighborhood just got some new bees.

If your beekeeping was a reality show, I would be so psyched.  It seems dramatic, keeping the hive healthy, installing a new queen, etc. Watching you scrape the comb for honey is also oddly satisfying.

thanks pugmaster. i would love to do a documentary, just philosophizing and hassling the bees. processing the honey is so satisfying to actually do as well.

these girls are in a good mood. i got stung once today but i made of w/ 9 frames of insect sugar! i could've taken more but i only had 9 empties to switch out. these are from my 'bee collective' so i'm gonna tip out the house half of what i get [then i'll tax half of theirs' but my bees are the real producers].

bees are interchangeable like one's as good as the next except the Queen. she's the $40 bee. it's thunderstorms outside cockblocking me from installing her but she's gotta get put in a hive tonight.

You getting any good sales with the honey yet? I remember you saying the farmer's market was giving you grief.

being hanging out with this girl, she took me out to her hive a couple days ago. We opened it up and took out all the racks to check for queen brood pods or whatever they are called, she was worried they might be preparing to abscond. I tell you, no gear on and bees getting louder and louder as you take their house apart, you better be on your most zen shit, it was a lot of fun and I was given a jar of honey for my troubles. And yes, I saw the queen!

Wherever you are shark, hope your bees are doing good.

beekeeping is dope. my cousin does it. dude's got 6 or 7 hives. I helped with a harvest last year and put in a full days work on that. Last time I was back that way we checked a couple hives and found a swarm from elsewhere which was really cool. Homie is deathly allergic and suits up every time. My lady and I talk about getting a few hives when we buy a spot.

Aside form the beekeeping activities, a supply of fresh honey is always excellent
If you plant ice, you’re gonna harvest wind
