Brothers From Different Mothers
« on: July 30, 2006, 12:48:43 PM »

Hope this works... attached is a Girl Skateboards ad from 95.  It has everyone on the team (except Richard Mulder (he was at Chaffey) and Keenan) lined up at Lockwood or another schoolyard in Cali.  A month or so after that Girl, Chocolate, and the FIRM went on a tour (it was in one of the early 411s).  Lucky for me, one of the stops was not that far away at all.  It was a skateshop in North Brunswick, NJ.

I may be wrong, but I think the demo came just before Mouse came out.  I honestly had no idea who Guy Mariano was.  I was fanning out over Carroll.  I didn't know much about who was who in skateboarding at the time, all I knew was that Questionable, Virtual Reality, and Goldfish told me that Carroll was the dude.  Anyways, Guy and Keenan were just the most amazing dudes skating that day.  There was this super sketchy flat ramp that was not even a board length wide.  I didn't even see Guy warm up, and he did a switch hardflip to fakie all the way at the top of this thing,  Next try he did it again with a videographer, and then again with a photographer.  Then he sat down and didn't skate for the rest of the day.  There was no question he didn't want to be there, that was kinda obvious on the face of the whole team (chocolate tour intro was at least somewhat inspired by this stop, it HAD to be).

Keenan just did every trick possible over a hay bail.  Nollie inward heel, back then, over a hay bail.  Bonkers.

Rick got all fucked up warming up with a front rock on a sketchy quarter, he fell and a screw that was sticking out ripped part of his leg up.  I was right there when it happend, and I remember asking him if he was okay, and he just looked at me and said, "This ramp is fucking bullshit".  It was pretty funny, at the time, and even now thinking about it.

I digress...

I just moved, and was going through things.  I thought it would be nice to hang this up on my wall.  I was about to hammer the nail in, and I thought of you guys.  Thought maybe you'd get a kick out of this.  So, here it is.  Enjoy.  I personally only got Guy's signature.  The rest one of my buddy's younger brother was on 'annoy the pro' detail.... He had a stack of this ad and was getting everyone to sign it.  At the time, I was kinda embarrassed for myself, the kid, and all of the team.  But, looking back, it's okay.  I get to hang this on my wall.  It's a snapshot of the era, and I love it.

All the kids who showed up just to see MJ would've been sincerely dissapointed they were 10 years too early.

Should of mentioned... some of the sigs are hard to read:

Jovantae (who apparently is living one year ahead of everyone else)
Gabriel
Lance Mountain
Koston
Ben Sanchez
Guy
York
Howard
Keenan
And that last one I can't make out... Could be Carroll?

That is cool. The first demo I ever went to was a girl demo. I had them all sign my helmet. Definitely a cool piece of memorobilia I still have.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
I quit skating for a time due to piling out

My first demo was world/blind at Cheapskates in South Orange, NJ...Mariano, Rodney Mullen, his tall wife,  Rudy Johnson, Tim Gavin....they didn't skate at all, and they vibed all the kids who came to the demo...this was in 92.
The next year was the "93 Tour De Blind" Ronnie Bertino, Henry Sanchez, Mariano, Steve Rocco, Rudy Johnson..this one was at Psycho Skates in Morristown, NJ...they actually had a decent set up and everyone skated (except Sanchez) and was mad cool....Ronnie Bertino and Mariano both killed it..switch 360 flips going full speed...every nollie to crooked grind you could think of...kids weren't really skating like that back then it was ill, and at the end Rocco gave away Hundred dollar bills....

First demo i went too was also a girl/choco demo. It was at Kansas city indoor skatepark. Koston, beibel, devine calloway, jeron wilson, scott johnston, sean malto,  and jereme rogers were there. Rogers was killing all the rails but i still dint like him. I wanted him to switch heel the 8 stair but he never did. Koston did a few flat tricks and talked shit on the park. jeron wilson was flying around trying nollie cab heels over this hip. devine was just being cool skating around, flowing, talking to kids....he skated the really good tho. Scott skated good for half the demo then either he broke his board or it broke i don't remember. He back smithed up this handrail thing it was sick. Beibel skated the mini for liek 5 minutes then gave his board to some kid. sean was doing the most perfect hardflips over this huge pyraimid gap and stuck it like 6th try and then did a bigspin varial heel 1st try over it. after the demo (i had met sean before) i hung out in their van that was prolly the best experience of my life even thought it was about 3 minutes...then me and some buddies got in a fight with these 2 kids who kept asking for kostons shit and we got annoyed. THen i played flat with beibel and calloway and beibel skated devines board. i got out with beibel at A and devine at T. Devine won tho. Sorry if that was lil long but that was like the best day of my life.
