ANIMAL INTERVIEW. Lady's and Gentlemen, Myself.
Nick Rix "
(Words by Dan Mcgrath)
DM: You good?
NR: Yeah!
DM: Alright Nick so the tables have turned it's time for you to get an interview you ready?
NR: Fuck yeah!
DM: Explain your entrance into the cruel world of skateboarding.
NR: I wouldn't call it cruel, Kevin or "midge" and his little brothers first got me into skating, and that was when I was 12 so yeah..
DM: Now that was about the age of ice creams baggy clothes and curly hair. How did you develop your present style?
NR: I pretty much didn't know what I was doing up until I met Chase Bartee and John Lavoie. they told me to go buy some cords and flannels because it looked better. It eventually just grew onto me. I've pretty much developed my own style now, but they were the spark.
DM: So, in a matter of 10 months you have successfully gone from about 5 clips in a friends montage (A Modern Day) to a 7 minute part with John Lavoie (Eastern Glow). How do you feel about it?
NR: I got better. those 5 clips in a modern day were probably some of the most legit clips I ever filmed at that point. as i got better you promised me you wouldn't release your next video until i had a full part. turns out i was the first one done with a full part for the next video. Hence the 7 minutes.
DM: As we all get better we go from handy cams to VX's and prov trips to New York and Florida trips. Do you think we may progress to bigger and better things? I hear some word about California...
NR: Just like your body and mind, everyday they grow. that can relate to skateboarding too. as you get better you make bigger moves, You step it up to new places. Or sometimes you just get bored of the same old stuff so you have to explore a little. As of california, I'm totally down to go there eventually also.. Just another place to explore.
DM: As far as exploring, I have noticed over the past few years that you have discovered a lot of hidden prov spots. In a way, I believe that you have taken the scene in Providence to another level. Agree or disagree?
NR: I agree, but I am defiantly not going to be super ignorant about it. I don't try to go out and be different I just am how I am. I try not to go out and skate Brigham or any other blown out spots you know? I try to film stuff I would like to see from someone else. If you like it you like it, if you don't..then don't watch it.
http://www.youtube.com/v/AVLI8s6ypY4&hl=en&fs=1DM: Who are some of your inspirations?
NR: Oh boy, so many. If I could narrow it down to five, I would say Bobby Worrest, Zach Lyons, Anthony Pappalardo, Jason Dill, and Kellen James
DM: I have personally heard a lot about your hookups with Creation skateboards and Satori wheels. I'm sure you've gotten both good and bad feedback as well, clear the air with this subject to those who don't know.
NR: I basically was being a impatient adolescent teenager sending my footage to everyone I was hyped on as soon as possible. I really regret rushing into everything, but Ron Allen was nice about the whole situation and liked my footage. He then explained the shop flow program we could do which is when Fountain of Youth does high grade distribution orders they throw in wheels, shirts, and boards for me. I feel blessed with anything I receive even though it might not seem like it. (thanks Ron, John, Grandison, and Donny)
DM: So you're the youngest in prov that's getting hooked up is that right?
NR: I'm pretty sure I am, I don't really look at it that way though
DM: Who's part are you most hyped on in eastern glow and why
NR: I don't want to disappoint anyone with this answer, but I would have to say Carlos or Yan. They are two locals who have been around for a while and have never dropped full length parts. I'm glad they came through.
DM: As far as progression I'd have to say that they killed it as well. Now that the videos over what are you currently working on if there is anything
NR: Recently me and Lavoie have been on the grind filming for a our new video called "don't bother me" which is going to be a part from me and him, then just a montage. We both have at least 1 minute of footage lined up so were pretty much halfway ready to release it. It wont be long enough to premiere and its too good of footage to just release on you tube, so that's pretty much in the air right now though.
DM: That was going to be premiered at the zoo york state of mind one in June, but because of a time limit the venue has you cant premiere it. Do you think that waiting for the next premiere would be worth it?
NR: I don't think so. the main reason Lavoie and I wanted to release it at the Zoo premiere is because we just came off of Eastern Glow and we wanted to show everyone what we are made of
DM: Well in one month Lavoie is sitting on 23 clips and you got 12. Do you think you get most of your footage by skating with him? You two seem to vibe off each other.
NR: Sometimes, we skate the same stuff and enjoy skating together so that helps. I don't cry about him not skating with me when he doesn't though, if we skate we skate.
DM: You're taking awhile to answer these questions, what are you doing?
NR: As your asking these questions, and as I try to answer them I am also editing my post for my interview. Like making grammar errors, fucking with colors, adding pictures. It's harder than it seems.
DM: You definitely have a lot more dedication to Animalike, which in result makes it the most popular one out there as far as our scene of skaters in R.I. What do you think of all the other blogger's out there trying to follow your path? not to mention any names.
NR: I've explained this many times to many people. Blogging is taking photos, or writing a diary via web. I really just recently chose to take photos from the day to day sessions and give funny descriptions for them. I don't care if you get a blog, but when you decide to, don't fucking steal my ideas..please.
DM: Well lets leave it on that note, any shout outs?
NR: First and foremost, You for filming me for years.. putting up with me and staying up this late and doing this, Everyone in Eastern Glow, Everyone that used to be my friend but now are too cool for me so they just hate, Everyone at FOY, I would love to thank a couple girls but I know I would end up regretting it in the near future, J-needz, Shetler, Chase Bartee, Pete, All the NP park homies, Everyone in ST;T2, The internet, Switch flips, Haters, Girls that wear spandex and have fat assess, and my guilty pleasure...Taco Bell.
