Started a DIY in an abandoned pirate ship restaurant. A little chalky, but it rules nonetheless

That is the coolest sentence I've ever heard. And the video was rad as well.

Thanks dude. Looking to paint the ramps this week. Anybody know what kind of paint to use? Or some kind of sealant? Like I said our shit is kinda dusty

hopefully yuze guys can see this. we put curbs on top of it so you can boardslide it from 'street' side and transfer into 'ramp' side. our little spot is coming along but it's one step forwards 2 steps back like paula abdul sang. mostly cause people keep knocking over the rainbow rail.

Hey Willie, that is the one.  I'll be out there working on it tomorrow.  We started putting down luan underlayment today. We will paint it at some point.  We had planned on finishing everything on the site by Tuesday, but it seems like we are behind a bit. We should have the whole ramp together except paint tomorrow.

We got a bit of press!

http://www.nj.com/south/index.ssf/2014/08/camden_pop-up_skatepark_gives_life_to_vacant_lot.html
so you got a million dollar grant and...... built a mini ramp and snake run?
did you get paid by the hour to build? cause if you're an employee i don't think it's considered 'DIY' anymore. why is it only gonna last 4 months? we have winter where i live but the spots don't disappear and if they did get covered in snow they'd return in spring like the swallows of capistrano.

You may want to get some glasses Shark Tits. The article says the $1m grant is for a series of projects & that the work was done by volunteers.

I work by contract and our budget was far from a million dollars. I think it is still considered DIY because I am not a professional ramp builder and neither are the community members who were involved.

The project is temporary due to the legal nature of things.  I don't know the specific details, but essentially it was temporary or never to be in the first place.  When you think about it everything spot is temporary, just a difference of months, years, or decades.

My hope is that we will find someone in the community who can stick it in a warehouse once the 4 months are up.

For all those with concrete diy spots, what cement are you using to surface quarterpipes, banks, and such.

you're sposedta use portland cement but i rarely do. what you can do though is use quickcrete 80 lb bag mixed w/ a handful of portland. make that $8 bag go further. if you just use the $3.75 bag it works but it's a bit coarser. i've even used mortar cause i get all benzo'd out prior to home depot and think i'm getting a steal. shtooops! it works to a degree but is more likely to turn into dust after a while.

If you get serious and make something big then it's cheapest to get sand, gravel, and portland separately then mix yourself (I forget the ratios).

Premixed quickrete is fine though.

how do you make the concrete smooth? I tried making a small quarter pipe in the backyard but the concrete is too crumbly. How do i fix this?

did you use some sort of metal/rebar? cause concrete doesn't want to stick to itself the way it bonds to metal. if you've got a fullblown ramp maybe use some coathangers or street signs to give a new layer something to adhere to.
