cooking
« on: August 16, 2006, 06:54:37 PM »
two years ago i moved to Detroit be closer to my school.  When living in the city i realized that there were not many quality restraunts around.  Good food is often expensive so i found myself learning to cook for the first time in order to save money.  I watched a lot of Iron Chef
(american and Japanese versions) and began to enjoy the process of finding choice ingredients and experimenting with recipes.  With that being said, i was wondering if anyone else likes to cook.

If so what do you like to cook?

a couple dishes i like to make are....

sesame crusted, pan-seared tuna.
baked mastaciolli with veal/pork/beef sauce...
lasagna
soup from scratch
fried chicken
and
Last year I made Thanksgiving Dinner. The Turkey was a lot of work but it turned out pretty good...
beauty is as beauty does...

im learning. I like to make jumbo shells. I made chicken and rice tonight also. Put a bunch of veggies with it and shit. Nothing big, but this is coming from a guy who learned how to make hard-boiled eggs last week. Cooking is definately fun and very rewarding. I also like the fact that I know exactly what I am putting into my body.

Sinbads huh? Have never been there.  Detroit has a lot of little gems but they're all really far from the DownTown area.  A lot of them close early on the weekdays too.

I like a lot of ethnic foods.
Indian, Japanese, Korean, Middle-eastern, Vietnamese, Thai...
has anyone attempted to make some of these foods? If so, how did they turn out?

i know how to cook really well, whenever i have the chance to cook people are all over that shit. but when it comes to my actual diet all i eat are ribwiches and microwaveable cheeseburgers and bagel bites. although i did eat a bowl of "pineapple tidbits" at work today.

I used to be a cashier at a fine foods grocery store.  My friend worked in the deli and schooled me on some of the best sandwiches...

Thick slices of fresh Mozarellla (good cheese! not the shreded ziplock stuff) + spinach + fresh tomato + garlic pesto spread + toasted baguette...  tasty and light

Cracked pepper turkey + white american cheese + a wee bit of barbecue sauce + foccacia or ciabatta bread + put it in your george foreman grill until the cheese melts.  The cracked pepper turkey is the best lunchmeat in my opinion...

Lots of Bacon + yellow cheese + toasted union bagel= simple but effective
beauty is as beauty does...

montreal smoked meat+ honey ham+ fresh french bread+ onions, lettuce, tomatoe+ canadian swiss toasted lightly under the broiler in my oven and then top it all off with a little mayo and honey mustard. This exact sandwich would be one part of my last meal if I were on death row. The meats gotta stack nice and high.

Two slices of plain turkey breast in a bun with lettuce and sundried tomatoes, a little bit of mayo and lots of pesto and grate romano over the top. This has been my go to for a while. I like to just fuck around with different ingredients and throw together sandwiches when I'm bored and hungry.
