Why I stopped shopping at Active...
« on: November 18, 2009, 12:22:03 AM »
Ya, so I stopped going to Active Rideshop when I was sick of:

-explaining why I only wanted to see decks that by size and not by brand

- saying "no, i'll do my own fucking griptape thank you"

- people calling me "bro"

- seeing employees who obviously don't skate wear shit that I can't afford

- asking employees, "so how do those shoes skate" (the shoes they are wearing), and then saying, "fuck it, nevermind"

- leaving the store with a guilty conscience; knowing i could have drove a little further to a real skateshop

the list goes on.  Does anybody have similar experiences with Active, or is it just the one by my area sucks?

I feel guilty anytime I go to a corporate establisment, instead of a local place. Be it food, music, skateboarding or whatever. Its always better to shop local. Fucking Walmart...sorry I'm drunk.

http://www.sacklunch.com/?p=187 Active hurting skate companies by overselling shop decks.

From Irvine-sucks.com, 100 reasons why Active blows:

1. They sell girls underwear.
2. I think one employee there skates.
3. Bad grip jobs.
4. “Oh, it might say that all active decks are on sale, but that doesn’t actually mean all of them.”
5. When you ask an employee for an 8.25 shop deck, they give you dumbest of stares and go get a less incompetent co worker.
6. They complain about gripping 8.25s. You shouldn’t have offered to grip it, dick.
7. They have a “Bro me a penny” dish at the front counter.
8. The skateboards are pushed to the very back corner, taking up maybe 5% of the store.
9. “What, we’ve never heard of that policy, since when has independent had a life time guarantee?”
10. “Oh you called Independent and they confirmed the policy? Well, don’t come into my store with that kind of attitude.” Ask Alex, it's a good story.
11. Skatin’ Steve is sponsored by them.
12. Eric Sellers was too.
13. Have you seen some of the art on the walls?
14. I mean all of the art.
15. Jumped to opportunity to carry awesome products such as “Ollie pop gum” and “Skaterade”.
16. It's easier to find girl's skateboarding products than Girl Skateboards product.
17. Not once have I seen them play a video in the store.
18. “Bro, do you know how much it would cost to have shop copies of all those videos?”
19. When discussing the topic of skateboarding in an english class, a girl uses the statement of “Well, I work at active, so I think I would know.” to argue with yours truly.
20. They probably don’t have www.irvine-sucks.com bookmarked.
21. The employees have tattoos, but they’re pussies.
22. The employees have too many piercings, and they’re pussies.
23. They catch on to awesome skateboarders scamming them too quickly.
24. Since when has 2 pairs of shoes for 85 dollars been considered a sale. (Thanks Noah)
25. I think about ten 13 year old girls work there, and they’ve never gripped a board.
26. They are a proud sponser of the Irvine High football team.
27. They carry far too many pairs of designer jeans.
28. The music played in the store is pretty crappy.
29. The posters on the window have pretty close to nothing to do with skateboarding, but instead girls with big sunglasses. Hooray.
30. 10:1 odds a customer in active has never skated in their life.
31. 20:1 odds a customer in active does not skate now.
32. You usually have to get pumped up for a heated arguement every time you go in there.
33. If they ever read this, or knew who I was, I’d probably get banned from going there.
34. They have the power to run little legitimate shops out of business, using walmart style tactics.
35. Do not exchange indy 149s, because they are afriad of the shredders that can handle such massive trucks.
36. Wouldn’t sell a certain Irvine-Sucks member a copy of the Flip video because of the fact it says must be older than 37 or whatever it said. Obviously the hip can’t have a sense of humor.
37. “Can’t make it as just a skate shop.”
38. How many employees there straighten their hair? Not counting the girls.
39. Girl employee, who couldn’t be older than 18, try and belittle shredders by saying “Can I see some I.D. little man?”
40. They don’t send us boxes of skate goodies for being the most awesome website coming out of Irvine. Thanks Utility ; ).

There ain't no shit on T.V. tonight

this kid in my class was wearing this sweatshirt that was multi material stitched all crazy with active written all over it.  This guy wears these hiking sandal boot things to every class. I decided right there that I would hate active forever.
say they ain't no gravity up there....mean we could get high and never come down....

Back in April when eS emailed all the skateshops hosting the regional Game of S.K.A.T.E
some guy from Active replied to the sender
"Are you still planning on doing any with Active? I'm definitely down to help in any way. Thanks man!!"
But for some reason he CC'd me.

so i replied, "maybe you should worry about paying your fucking bills before you worry about GOS."

that made him sad.
which made me happy.

I wouldn't mind if my shop sold women's underwear. What's the problem there? You set up a new board and try to chat up some chick picking out panties. Win win.
i saw my grandma bail off a 4 set once in my house and she even got up and came to red lobster after.

A while back I started checking the Better Business Bureau to see how some of the online shops looked.  SkateAmerica.com (Spin Corporation) is really bad.

BBB Grade: F
http://www.bbb.org/denver/business-reviews/internet-shopping/spin-corporation-in-golden-co-90018116

Also, at one time SkateAmerica had no phone # so I emailed saying that my order (I never made) never arrived and needed to speak to someone urgently.  They refused to give me a ph #.  They made it impossible to cancel something they had backordered when I finally did do a small order to test how their shit worked.

Active is not doing so well on the BBB front either.  Ouch.

BBB Grade: F
http://www.la.bbb.org/Business-Report/Active-100068123

Called CCS and SkateAmerica to place test orders to see how well they knew their shit.  The people I talked to at both places didn't say anything when I said I wanted Indy 215s on my 7.625" complete....

So can you call active, get a female employee on the phone, ask her to try on their panties and then describe the fit and feel to you?

ive worked at one for 2 years now. yes the company makes horrible decisions, but there are some cool people in the company. im not defending the company, the shops, or the brand, but saying that EVERYONE in the company is lame isnt true. at the end of the day, its a paycheck, and better than working at mcdonalds.

also in my 2 years working there, ive convinced countless kids to buy a toy machine, dlx, dgk, blackbox etc board instead of buying an active deck and some stupid shirt,(kids who claim they cant afford the extra 10-20 bucks to get a company board, have no problem buying a 40 dollar streetwear shirt) so i dont feel guilty for working there.

i tend to do that too, I tend to look at people's shoes more than I look at them.... it's a weird tendency I have/ I'm always curious to find other skaters
