painting decks
« on: March 11, 2011, 08:42:03 AM »
sorry if this has been done before, but i couldn't find any past topics.

if i wanted to paint a blank without ruining it's skatability, what kind of paint could i use?
anyone have any idea what kind of paint/process distributions go through while doing this?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

ttching!

Water based paints don't really skate well and tend to have a matte finish.  Oil based paints skate fine, and look great when they dry, but involve a lot of clean-up with nasty chemicals, and the thinner which is already in them can chemically react with any lacquer still on the board from the factory, which while potentially interesting, visually, has an adverse effect on the board's skateability.  Use spray-paint.  It finishes well, won't react with the lacquer, is cheap, easy, effective, involves minimal clean-up and drys quickly.

thanks for the help.

spraypaint wasn't really what i had in mind, but it sounds like you know what you're talking about.
i'll go ahead and avoid the other two.

i also thought about applying clearcoat over paint and then waxing that. i don't know if that would make a difference.
i'll more than likely just skate it blank.

I made a DIY boards topic in the shoes/gear thread. go look that up, and when you make your stuff, post up there!
