Oregon Trail

We had this game in my computer lab in elementary school. Anyone else play this? The best part was that you could name your characters after your friends, but then they'd always get Cholera and die, and bandits would steal your stuff in the night.
This game taught kids that life is fucking difficult; your friends will die and brigands will undoubtedly take your shit.

But there's another message in this game. A message about perseverance.

Ford the river, every day. No matter what, ford that shit. What, it's deep and you have gonorrhea of the leg? Fording. 80,000 oxen cause all you bought at the general store was oxen? Fording. Tired and hungry because you spent all your money on bullets to hunt the evasive and slow moving water buffalo? FORD THE RIVER. FORD IT. FTR. Forddd the shit out of the river.

I pwned oregon trail even when I drowned, because it was about courage and bravery and perseverance and fording even in the face of adversity. And when you have cholera, that face is not pretty. So what do you do? Close your eyes and ford. Then shoot some fresh squirrel on the other side.

Caulking and floating never worked out. Your shit always tipped over. Nobody had the money to ferry across either, unless you were the pussy ass banker. Fording the river was equivalent to ripping a bandaid off quickly. Besides, you don't actually want to make it to Oregon with your family. You want to start fresh, start new, and hammer down on some Oregon settler tail when you get there.

Also I used to get fucking pissed when you could only carry back 99 or 100lbs of buffalo meat.

Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego was another eye opener. You basically hunt that fox for eternity.

We had a teacher that swore by this game in grade school and would take two days out of our weekly schedule to take us to the computer lab to play this game.

My friends and I would always give them the corniest/dirtiest names and chuckle. I was never any good and always made the worst decisions unintentionally while playing.

So maybe Mrs. third grade teacher was a lot smarter than I once thought and the game could truly reflect your near future decision making skills.

Oregon trail was dope, but at some point my school got a hold of Zoombinis, and I never looked back, or more likely just forgot Oregon Trail existed.

What was that old video game where you're that round yellow dude and you eat dots and get chased by ghosts and it was all wonka-wonka-wonka? This has been bugging me for weeks!

All we ever did on the game was hunt.
When i was little my cousins got me into scorch and commander keen, spent hours watching little tanks shoot dots at eachother.

hahaha yes.  ahh 90's nostalgia.

i had the pleasure of playing this for a while, until our teacher discovered this:

not sure if anyone can relate, but it was this obnoxious typing "game" that tested speed, but it was bullshit because as far as i can tell it was designed to distract you.  for instance, there was a level where a lizard eats the letters..who can concentrate when that shit is going on?

This dude was in pretty much every "The Learning Company" game I ever owned.  Most memorable was "Gizmos and Gadgets".

I totally agree with the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing crap.  It would always have me type random letters, so I couldn't type quickly.  I type in words, not individual, random letters.

Dude, that was like the treat if you got your shit done early when I was in school.

As far as oregon trail goes. It definitely was fun to kill ten buffalo when you could only take back the meat of one. I'd always hunt until it told me game was gettin' scarce.
rafting down the river at the end was epic too.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”

Loved that game- used to play it so much at school simply because hitting spacebar to fire that zapper you had transformed it into more of a 'video game' in my mind

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.
