Why do brand new wheels turn white?
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:01:12 PM »
I have some wheels still shrink wrapped sitting in a box and they are starting to turn yellow.  This is the 3rd time this has happened.  I thought that they turn yellow because of the sun.  Does anyone know why this happens?

They turn yellow because they get scared when you approach obstacles or ollie really high. Bones have a higher bravery durometer and therefore don't go yellow like normal urethane.

...in case you wanna know why wheels turn yellow,...
in a nutshell:
Wheels turning yellow is actually a sign of good urethane.
You can add so called "UV stabilizers" to the formular which keep your wheels white longer but that also makes the wheels flatspot easier.
The urethane reacts to light ( bright sunlight or just lying around in your room).
Bones Wheels formular has an anti melting agent whcih apparently is respnsible for its true white.
Funny fact, chemically, the bones urethane formular is not as high quality as for example the plan b superthane wheels.
Meaning, once you flatspot a bones wheel there is almost no way to have a nice roll.
High quality wheels will "lose" the flatspot ( unless you were skating a downhill in SF).

Of course it might take some effort to flatspot a bones wheel.

Oh and next time read your subject line before you post,...

not true.  all i've ever gotten on STFs are tiny flatspots and they ride out almost immediately.

chemically it is true, I am not talking about small flatspots, I mean like a real flatspot.
Anyway there is always the exception to the rule  :)

paging all urethane dorks to the thread, stat

my spitfires have always turned into an awful yellow color, like they've got a packaday habit. bought some bones recently and it's like they are whiter than brand new spitfires after a couple of months. don't know if they're a better or worse wheel per se, they just look damn white.

yeah they use a different that average formular ( obviously) plus they have a heat resistant agent added to the mix.

are you actually trying to convince people that plan b wheels are of higher quality than bones?  please put the crack pipe down.
board companies make boards, not wheels.  thats like going to a chinese place and ordering a pizza and expecting it to be good.

wheel company wheels > board company wheels
bones/hubba/autobahn/satori > plan b

nah I am not trying to convince anyone of anything.
Shit like that has nothing to do with Pnan B, Plan B makes their high quality (Superthane) wheels at the same place  that autobahn and many others do.
They also use that companies best mix.
It was just the first thing that sprang to mind.

and of course "better" is always in the eye of the beholder.

Little known fact, if you piss on yellow wheels they will become white again. Something to do with the ammonia in it.

they make terrible wheels.  they include them with their sneaker store completes along with reflex trucks.
please stop this crazy talk.

wheel company wheels > board company wheels
