Best wheels that aren't made by a skate wheel company?
« on: April 07, 2011, 01:14:57 AM »
Just a question outta curiosity. What would you guys say are the best wheels that aren't actually made by a company that specializes in making skate wheels(spitfire, momentum, hubba, pig, etc.)? i've skated AWS wheels and they sucked. Wouldn't slide worth a shit. They did stay white for a long while though before they started yellowing, which i guess is kind of a plus. I've heard bad things about girl/chocolate/skate mental wheels too. I've heard baker wheels aren't too bad. Opinions?

The blueprint and Unabomber wheels i've had were good. Death wheels are the shit! Although, I think they have a dedicated wheel team now so not sure if that counts, ha.

My friend has some Element wheels, and he says that they are the best he has ever ridden.
Also I heard that Consolitated wheels are tight.

Most wheels are made by a factory that specializes in pouring urethane for different applications. Any company that uses Creative Urethane should be pretty good.

baker and deathwish wheels tend to be decent because a lot of their team riders just ride their wheels. Reynolds is on baker wheels if I remember correctly.

Bones are insanely slippery pieces of shit..............if kids over waxing stuff wasn't bad enough, we have all these super hard wheels now that make everything feel pre-waxed.

FYI, spitfire is a wheel made by a board company and they aren't what they used to be.

theres no best wheel made by a board company because board branded wheels are all produced by other wheel/urethane manufacturers.  all they do is print their logo on them.

Yeah, I remember seeing a picture of him not too long  ago and he was skating some spitfire classics.

Who do they make wheels for? Can I get a list?

I dunno, even though bones makes bearings too, I've always just thought of them as a company that would count as "only specializing in wheels". It's like the side of bones that makes bearings and the side that makes wheels are two completely different companies.

If you tried the SPF wheels for skating parks you would probably think different, maybe not. But I ride STFs and they work great for street. Last a long time and grip fine for me.

my wheel history for as far as i can think back

my aws wheels where okay i guess (they were amazing for like a week though, i remember being stoked on them)
spitfires where a dissappointment
black labels blew
element cores feel out
ccs cores were crap
then i got some wheels for a board i found that where good i think they were some local brand
autobahns weren't that bad
then organika wheels that where cool, but they maybe the same formula as goold wheels since they are kayo
now i got bones, since like december, no complaints

one thing i might have to add to my "buy bones" statement:

if you?re not trapped in austria and actually have access to more than 5 wheel companies, i would go and try SML, HIFI or Paradise wheels for sure. i?d be really interested how those feel.

Oh, and one of the dudes around here, he always skates Darkstar wheels, and I have never seen him having a flatspot or anything, so I guess they are kinda good..

Only non wheel company wheels I've ridden were Habitat & Enjoy & both were terrible.

Anyone ever had Teenage Runaway wheels? Really want to try some, however they don't ship out this way.

i had a few sets of teenage runaway wheels about four or five years ago(?). i remember them being pretty good. i've also always loved that company based on the graphics and stickers alone. they had a 'fyodor dostoyevsky the original emo" graphic that i flipped my shit over. i don't know if their urethane has changed at all, but i'd still ride them regardless any day if i could ever find them
i used to blow through sets of wheels in 2-3 weeks, so i was constantly buying new wheels. i loved hubba and spitfirs even if they didn't hold up the best compared to other brands. a few years ago a bunch of posters got f1 samples from spitfire. of all the sets of wheels i've had i have to tip my hat to them. i assume those hubba ones are the same formula since the regular wheels are anyways. i could never get into bones. i have a long standing hatred towards powell and i don't think their stuff is what it's cracked/hyped up to be. the bearings max out and lock up, the bushings explode, the wheels look like plastic toy store wheels, the wheels don't feel right, and the shape of their boards are horrible

that's weird seeing all these bad spitfire experiences. i've skated so many sets and only had one bad set which they replaced for me. bones wheels are great though.

As lame of a company as it may be, Darkstar urethane is actually legit.

darkstar was a wheel company before it was a board company right? i remember them always trying out new technologies and stuff, mullens behind it obviously. shouldn't be too bad.
