Rodney Mullen Changed his stance
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:20:35 PM »
according to Lewis Marnell in the skateboard mag issue 89, he skates goofy now, if you're good enough to switch up your stance, you're a fucking beast

i heard that he wrecked his back from pushing all those years....I get it because mine is a bit messed up.  I made an effort to push switch but it lasted about 20 minutes.  Something like he's filming his last three tricks first, if he does them, he'll put a part together....

There was a video interview a couple years ago with him explaining it.  I'm pretty sure he said he has some internal scar tissue that makes his hip or leg really tight and fucks up his skating in his normal stance.  Hopefully he's healthy enough to film a part.

I can't remember who put that out, but he got under his car in his garage and used a car jack and macgivered his shit knocking his hip back into place ala Mel Gibson style in Lethal Weapon. He made the analogy/comparison of those times you roll your ankle, you can still skate a certain way, i.e. switch. This is how he lead into the whole, "I'm goofy thing..."

So in other words he rolled his ankle like his hip. He rolled his hip like his ankle, I mean. He had that sequence of a goofy footed kickflip one foot nose manual up the manny pad at pier 7, been waiting for the footage. Daewon has had lots of new footage since then, but I don't think anything released by Almost. So I'm guessing it's all saved for the Almost video. Which should be sick as fuck.

Skatenorth was right. He wasn't knocking his hip back into place, he was tearing the scar tissue that built up in his hip. Either way, it was gnar as fuck. Can't wait to see how he skate now that he's goofy.
Like Daewon said: if skateboarding is a ten story building, Rodney is on eleventh floor.

my beautiful mind says you all should say "rodney mullen can only skate switch now" but my heart says rodney can modify the rules of psychomotor physics so whatever

So if Rodney does a trick regular now, does that mean it's switch?

i remembered it, mostly because you never really saw him hit handrails so it was surprising at the time

For his next video part, he could just sit in front of a camera and tell you what tricks he did, and you'd believe him.

I'm going to argue that Placebo owes their entire career to a Canadian dude's skate video part. Appleyard should be getting royalties for this shit.

Anyone remember hearing a story that Ali Boulala started to skate regular, had a 1-2year break from skating (this happened when he was really young) and came back goofy. This would definitely explain those switch shifty ollies he does.
